CHOW’S THEOREM FOR SEMI-ABELIAN VARIETIES AND BOUNDS FOR SPLITTING FIELDS OF ALGEBRAIC TORI CHIA-FU YU Abstract. A theorem of Chow concerns homomorphisms of two abelian vari- eties under a primary field extension base change. In this paper we generalize Chow’s theorem to semi-abelian varieties. This contributes to different proofs of a well-known result that every algebraic torus splits over a finite separable field extension. We also obtain the best bound for the degrees of splitting fields of tori. 1. Introduction Let k be a field, k¯ an algebraic closure of k, and ks the separable closure of k in k¯. A connected algebraic k-group T is an algebraic torus if there is a k¯-isomorphism d T ⊗k k¯ ≃ (Gm) ⊗k k of algebraic groups for some integer d ≥ 0. We say T splits d over a field extension K of k if there is a K-isomorphism T ⊗k K ≃ (Gm) ⊗k K. This paper is motivated from the following fundamental result. Theorem 1.1. Any algebraic k-torus T splits over ks. In other words, T splits over a finite separable field extension of k. This theorem is well known and it is stated and proved in the literature several times. Surprisingly, different authors choose their favorite proofs which are all quite different. As far as we know, the first proof is given by Takashi Ono [40, Proposition 1.2.1]. Armand Borel gives a different proof in his book Linear Algebraic Groups; see [3, Proposition 8.11]. In the second edition of his book Linear Algebraic Groups [49], T.A. -

We first recall that a Lie group is a group that is also a differentiable manifold 1 and multiplication (x, y xy) and inverse (x x ) are C1 maps. Abstract The rationality problem for algebraic tori is well known. It is known that any algebraic torus is unirational over its field of definition. The first purpose of this work is to solve rational- ity problem for 5 dimensional stably rational algebraic tori with an indecomposable character lattice. In order to do so, we have studied the associated character lattices of the mentioned algebraic tori. For each character lattice L, either we see the lattice as an associated lattice to a root system (of which rationality of its corresponding algebraic torus is known) or we find a reduced component of L so that we can relate rationality of the associated algebraic torus to lower dimensions. -

COHOMOLOGICAL INVARIANTS OF ALGEBRAIC GROUPS AND THE MORAVA K-THEORY NIKITA SEMENOV Abstract. In the present article we discuss different approaches to cohomological in- variants of algebraic groups over a field. We focus on the Tits algebras and on the Rost invariant and relate them to the Morava K-theory. Furthermore, we discuss oriented cohomology theories of affine varieties and the Rost motives for different cohomology theories in the sense of Levine–Morel. 1. Introduction The notion of a Tits algebra was introduced by Jacques Tits in his celebrated paper on irreducible representations [Ti71]. This invariant of a linear algebraic group G plays a crucial role in the computation of the K-theory of twisted flag varieties by Panin [Pa94] and in the index reduction formulas by Merkurjev, Panin and Wadsworth [MPW96]. It has important applications to the classification of linear algebraic groups and to the study of associated homogeneous varieties. Tits algebras are examples of cohomological invariants of algebraic groups of degree 2. The idea to use cohomological invariants in the classification of algebraic groups goes back to Jean-Pierre Serre. In particular, Serre conjectured the existence of an invariant of degree 3 for groups of type F4 and E8. This invariant was later constructed by Markus Rost for all G-torsors, where G is a simple simply-connected algebraic group, and is now called the Rost invariant (see [GMS03]). Furthermore, the Milnor conjecture (proven by Voevodsky) provides a classification of quadratic forms over fields in terms of the Galois cohomology, i.e., in terms of cohomo- arXiv:1406.5609v2 [math.AG] 31 Mar 2015 logical invariants. -

UNDERLYING VARIETIES AND GROUP STRUCTURES VLADIMIR L. POPOV Abstract. Starting with exploration of the possibility to present the underlying variety of an affine algebraic group in the form of a product of some algebraic varieties, we then explore the naturally arising problem as to what extent the group variety of an algebraic group determines its group structure. 1. Introduction. This paper arose from a short preprint [16] and is its extensive extension. As starting point of [14] served the question of B. Kunyavsky [10] about the validity of the statement, which is for- mulated below as Corollary of Theorem 1. This statement concerns the possibility to present the underlying variety of a connected reductive algebraic group in the form of a product of some special algebraic va- rieties. Sections 2, 3 make up the content of [16], where the possibility of such presentations is explored. For some of them, in Theorem 1 is proved their existence, and in Theorems 2–5, on the contrary, their non-existence. Theorem 1 shows that there are non-isomorphic reductive groups whose underlying varieties are isomorphic. In Sections 4–10, we explore the problem, naturally arising in connection with this, as to what ex- tent the underlying variety of an algebraic group determines its group structure. In Theorems 6–8, it is shown that some group properties (dimension of unipotent radical, reductivity, solvability, unipotency, arXiv:2105.12861v1 [math.AG] 26 May 2021 toroidality in the sense of Rosenlicht) are equivalent to certain geomet- ric properties of the underlying group variety. For example, the group GLn is the subvariety of (n + 1) × (n + 1) matrices A 0 0 a with determinant det(A) a = 1. The matrix entries are well behaved functions on the group, here for 1 example a = det− (A). The formulas for matrix multiplication are certainly algebraic, and the inverse of a matrix A is its transpose adjoint times the inverse of its determinant, which are both algebraic. Hoffmann Version of September 14, 2006. 1 2 SKIP GARIBALDI Preface These notes are divided into three parts. The first part is based on material developed for inclusion in Serre’s lecture notes in [GMS03], but was finally omitted. I learned most of that material from Serre. This part culminates with the determination of the invariants of P GLp mod p (for p prime) and the invariants of Albert algebras (equivalently, groups of type F4) mod 3. The second part describes a general recipe for finding a subgroup N of a given 1 1 semisimple group G such that the natural map Hfppf (∗,N) → H (∗,G) is surjective. It is a combination of two ideas: that parabolic subgroups lead to representations with open orbits, and that such representations lead to surjective maps in Galois cohomology. I learned the second idea from Rost [Ros99b], but both ideas seem to have been discovered and re-discovered many times. We bring the two ideas together here, apparently for the first time. Representation theorists will note that our computations of stabilizers N for various G and V — summarized in Table 21a — are somewhat more precise than the published tables, in that we compute full stabilizers and not just identity components. The surjectivities in cohomology are used to describe the mod 3 invariants of the simply connected split E6 and split E7’s. The last two sections of this part describe a construction of groups of type E8 that is “surjective at 5”, see Prop. -

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE THEORY OF LINEAR ALGEBRAIC GROUPS: GOOD REDUCTION AND FINITENESS PROPERTIES ANDREI S. RAPINCHUK AND IGOR A. RAPINCHUK The focus of this article is on the notion of good reduction for algebraic varieties and particularly for algebraic groups. Among the most influential results in this direction is the Finiteness Theorem of G. Faltings, which confirmed Shafarevich’s conjecture that, over a given number field, there exist only finitely many isomorphism classes of abelian varieties of a given dimension that have good reduction at all valuations of the field lying outside a fixed finite set. Until recently, however, similar questions have not been systematically considered in the context of linear algebraic groups. Our goal is to discuss the notion of good reduction for reductive linear algebraic groups and then formulate a finiteness conjecture concerning forms with good reduction over arbitrary finitely generated fields. This conjecture has already been confirmed in a number of cases, including for algebraic tori over all fields of characteristic zero and also for some semi-simple groups, but the general case remains open. What makes this conjecture even more interesting are its multiple connections with other finiteness properties of algebraic groups, first and foremost, with the conjectural properness of the global-to-local map in Galois cohomology that arises in the investigation of the Hasse principle. Moreover, it turns out that techniques based on the consideration of good reduction have applications far beyond the theory of algebraic groups: as an example, we will discuss a finiteness result arising in the analysis of length-commensurable Riemann surfaces that relies heavily on this approach. -

CLASSIFICATION OF SPECIAL REDUCTIVE GROUPS ALEXANDER MERKURJEV Abstract. We give a classification of special reductive groups over arbitrary fields that improves a theorem of M. Huruguen. 1. Introduction An algebraic group G over a field F is called special if for every field extension K=F all G-torsors over K are trivial. Examples of special linear groups include: 1. The general linear group GLn, and more generally the group GL1(A) of invertible elements in a central simple F -algebra A; 2. The special linear group SLn and the symplectic group Sp2n; 3. Quasi-trivial tori, and more generally invertible tori (direct factors of quasi-trivial tori). 4. If L=F is a finite separable field extension and G is a special group over L, then the Weil restriction RL=F (G) is a special group over F . A. Grothendieck proved in [3] that a reductive group G over an algebraically closed field is special if and only if the derived subgroup of G is isomorphic to the product of special linear groups and symplectic groups. In [4] M. Huruguen proved the following theorem. Theorem. Let G be a reductive group over a field F . Then G is special if and only if the following three condition hold: (1) The derived subgroup G0 of G is isomorphic to RL=F (SL1(A)) × RK=F (Sp(h)) where L and K are ´etale F -algebras, A an Azumaya algebra over L and h an alternating non-degenerate form over K. (2) The coradical G=G0 of G is an invertible torus.
