Firefighters were called, but the house is basi- cally a total loss, he said. Fire gutted the garage, but smoke and water damage swept through the rest of the home on Silver Birch Place in the Crystal Creek subdivision in Longwood. Wallenberg has lived there for 28 years. “He is a very generous man who gives his sister, niece, great niece and great nephew a place to live,” said neighbor Jennifer Gregory, who started the fundraiser. The goal is $10,000, she told the Herald. Wallenberg said he took in his sister after the housing crisis in 2008. More recently, COVID-19 took his niece’s job, so she and her two children, ages 5 and 9, also came to live at the home. “My whole concern about the whole thing, the children are traumatized,” Wallenberg said. “They kind of took this hard.” He said they have lost all of their toys and clothing, basically everything they’ve ever owned, which is difficult for someone so young. On top of that, they have dealt with going back to school in this pandemic, he said. It has been a challenging year for Wallenberg, who lost his brother in January. He is also living on workman’s comp after he said he was hurt on the job. Neighbors and church’s have offered love and support, Wallenberg said. He has appreciat- ed any donations for the children, such as toys, school supplies and clothing. His niece lost her job and her husband abandoned her. She is a graduate of Rollins College, who has been going through a lot of hardship as a single mother. Wallenberg has tried to remain positive and apply humor to the situation, he said. “They’ll rebuild the house eventually,” he said. “Then we’ll have a new house.” He’s not comfortable taking charity, so the kind actions of some neighborhood kids made him emotion- al as he told what they did. Five boys came walking up to the home, he said. They had probably never seen anything like the fire. They were curious and staring at the damage. They left, and returned with a donation of all of their allowances, Wallenberg said, barely able to speak as he recalled what the boys did for him and his family. The kindness gave him a lot of hope, he said. “Despite all this political divide, our children are still learning to give,” he said. The fire melted the front of his prized Ford F150 Lightning truck, but it didn’t hurt much of what he called his botanical garden. The orchids and bromeliads and most of the rest of his pas- sion for gardening survived. He figures he has about $25,000 invested in the garden, he said. 3_24_pages_8to10.qxp_Pages sports Majors template 3/23/21 2:36 PM Page 3
