Longines Turf Winner Notes- Owner, Aga Khan
H.H. Aga Khan Born: Dec. 13, 1936, Geneva, Switzerland Family: Children, Rahim Aga Khan, Zahra Aga Khan, Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, Hussain Aga Khan Breeders’ Cup Record: 15-2-0-2 | $3,447,400 • Billionaire, philanthropist and spiritual leader, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV is also well known as an owner and breeder of Thoroughbreds. • Has two previous Breeders’ Cup winners – Lashkari (GB), captured the inaugural running of Turf (G1) in 1984 and Kalanisi (IRE) won 2000 edition of race. • This year, is targeting the $4 million Longines Turf with his good European filly Tarnawa (IRE), who was also cross-entered for the $2 million Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1) after earning an automatic entry via the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series upon winning Longines Prix de l’Opera (G1) Oct. 4 at Longchamp. Perfect in three 2020 starts, the homebred also won Prix Vermeille (G1) in September. • Powerhouse on the international racing stage. Has won the Epsom Derby five times, including the record 10-length victory in 1981 by the ill-fated Shergar (GB), who was famously kidnapped and never found. In 2000, Sinndar (IRE) became the first horse to win Epsom Derby, Irish Derby (G1) and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) the same season. In 2008, his brilliant unbeaten filly Zarkava (IRE) won the Arc and was named Europe’s Cartier Horse of the Year. • Trainers include Ireland-based Dermot Weld, Michael Halford and beginning in 2021 former Irish champion jockey Johnny Murtagh, who rode Kalanisi to his Breeders’ Cup win, and France-based Alain de Royer-Dupre, Jean-Claude Rouget, Mikel Delzangles and Francis-Henri Graffard • Almost exclusively races homebreds but is ever keen to acquire new bloodlines, evidenced by acquisition of the late Francois Dupre's stock in 1977, the late Marcel Boussac’s in 1978 and Jean-Luc Lagardere’s in 2005. -

TUESDAY, 13 OCTOBER 2020 CURRAGH LEGEND JOHN OXX TO RETIRE CAMILLERI=S KINGMAN By John Berry COLT LEADS THE WAY This year we have become accustomed to things becoming very different. On Monday it was announced that we shall have to get used to something else: next year there will be no John Oxx training at Currabeg on the edge of The Curragh, with the legendary Irish trainer having revealed his intention to retire at the end of November. Few readers of this publication will be able to recall such a situation, but even for those whose racing memories are restricted to some or all of the 42 seasons in which the current John Oxx has been at the helm of this most dependable of vessels, this truly is the end of an era. John Oxx Sr began training in 1943 at the age of 33. Seven years later he bought Currabeg, and 70 years of sustained excellence in that iconic stable began. Oxx remained among the leaders of his profession for decades, most obviously being champion trainer in 1958. Ups and Downs Show Constant Class of Oxx Cont
FRIDAY, 6 JULY 2018 In the years since, however, Oxx has been dropped by both the UPS AND DOWNS SHOW Aga Khan, owner of Sinndar and his principal patron until 2013, and the Tsui family, who owned Sea The Stars but moved their CONSTANT CLASS OF OXX horses from Ireland in 2016. So far this season Oxx has been able to field 18 horses; just three of them winners. Nonetheless a conversation with this particular wise man remains an unchanging source of equilibrium in a changing world, without the faintest inflection of resentment or defensiveness. Instead there is such comforting familiarity to his bearing--benign, calm and modest--that you feel cheapened by your own sense of affront on his behalf. "People were very upset," he admits, quietly bemused. "More than I was, in a way. Of course I was upset, and it affected our business and our livelihood. But you know, I've been in this business all my life. I know what it's like. I'm kind of mentally prepared for anything, and was probably the person--well, I won't say least upset, but I wasn't as upset as a lot of people around me, and a lot of people well disposed to me.@ Cont. p2 IN TDN AMERICA TODAY SALES LANDSCAPE CHANGING AT KEENELAND John Oxx | racingfotos.com Officials at Keeneland have tweaked their upcoming September and November sales and have announced the reintroduction of the By Chris McGrath April 2YO sale for 2019, including a horses-of-racing-age section. Oxx, Prendergast Join Forces Cont
SATURDAY, 12 JANUARY 2019 COMPAS BACKING TWO NEW RECRUITS OXX, PRENDERGAST By Alayna Cullen JOIN FORCES Compas Stallions is a growing force among the Irish stallion ranks, with its founder and owner Micheal Orlandi adding two young sires to his roster for 2019. Micheal manages five stallions in total with the addition of Smooth Daddy (Scat Daddy) and Kuroshio (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who both stand at Clongiffen Stud alongside My Dream Boat (Ire) (Lord Shanakill), whose first foals arrive this year. Orlandi speaks with TDN's Alayna Cullen about his new stallions. TDN: Micheal, how did Compas Stallions come about? MO: Well, this is going to be my fifth year in business. I started off originally with Compas Equine as a bloodstock agent and from there I went into Compas Stallions. This is my fourth year involved with stallions. The stallion who really started things off for me was Cappella Sansevero (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), who has his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2019. John Oxx will be the official trainer of champion 2-year-old filly I really enjoyed being an agent and I learned a lot and I had Skitter Scatter | racingfotos.com some excellent clients but I realized that the stallion market has a huge impact in the industry as a whole. If you were lucky Patrick Prendergast, who handled last year=s Cartier champion enough, fortunate enough to come across a good stallion, you 2-year-old filly Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) for Anthony and could impact the industry forevermore. I just thought, if I could Sonia Rogers, will not renew his training license this year and get involved in the stallion industry and try and make it work, I will instead move his string and staff to the yard of John Oxx, definitely would enjoy it and it would be a challenge, so here I with the pair forming a training alliance in Oxx=s name.
