Abstract Crematogaster ashmeadi is the dominant arboreal ant occurring on longleaf pines in the Apalachi- cola National Forest of northern Florida. Newly-mated C. ashmeadi queens preferentially founded colonies in abandoned beetle galleries in the dead branches of longleaf pine saplings. There was a positive association between the frequency of queens in trees, several size-related tree character- istics and the amount of insect boring activity in dead branches. The dispersion of newly-mated queens among trees was clumped, suggesting that these queens selected founding sites according to their suitability for colony founding, and that these favorable characteristics were clumped among saplings. The occurrence of founding nests was not related to the prior presence of other ants on the tree. Survival of incipient colonies during the first year was low (7.6%), and their dispersion was not different from random. One possible explanation for this change in dispersion over the year is aggressive interference competition between incipient colonies, although random mortality cannot be discounted. Gonthier Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science in Biology (Ecology track) The University of Toledo May 2010 Tropical systems are complex, species diverse, and are often regulated by top-down forces (higher trophic levels control lower trophic levels). In many ecosystems insects, especially herbivores and their mutualists, may be strongly affected by plant quality and other bottom-up controls (nutrient availability, plant genetic variation, ect.). Yet few have asked how plant quality (nutritional and defensive plant traits) can contribute to the population regulation and the complexity of these systems. In this thesis, I investigate the importance of soil-quality to both the elemental and secondary metabolite content in coffee and ask how changes to plant quality can influence hemipteran herbivores, their ant-mutualists, predators, and insect communities in a tropical coffee agroecosystem. -

Rapid radiations in early ant evolution have often proven diffcult to resolve with traditional Sanger-sequencing data sets of modest size. We provide a phylogenomic perspective on the evolution of the hyperdiverse ant tribe Crematogastrini by analyzing sequence data for nearly 1,800 ultraconserved element (UCE) loci from 153 species comprising 56 genera. We reconstruct a next-to-complete genus-level phylogeny using concatenated maximum likelihood and species-tree approaches, estimate divergence dates and diversifcation rates for the tribe, and investigate the evolution of nest sites. Our results show 10 well-supported major clades which we defne as the Cataulacus, Carebara, Vollenhovia, Podomyrma, Crematogaster, Mayriella, Lordomyrma, Myrmecina, Paratopula, and Formicoxenus genus-groups. -
Applied Ecology and Control of Imported Fire Ants and Argentine
APPLIED ECOLOGY AND CONTROL OF IMPORTED FIRE ANTS AND ARGENTINE ANTS (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) by BEVERLY ANNE WILTZ (Under the Direction of Daniel R. Suiter) ABSTRACT The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), are invasive species that are major pests in urban, natural, and agricultural habitats. The goal of this dissertation was to study aspects the chemical sensitivity, behavior, and ecology of each species to enhance control options. In these studies, I: 1) provide recommendations for the optimal usage of various insecticides against each species, 2) evaluate deterrent and toxic effects of natural products, 3) develop a delivery system for ant toxicants that uses a pheromonal attractant to facilitate toxicant transfer by contact, and 4) determine which habitats within blackland prairies are most susceptible to invasion by imported fire ants. Bifenthrin had properties best suited for use as barrier or mound treatments against both species. In laboratory assays, it was the fastest acting of the chemicals tested and was the only chemical that acted as a barrier to ant movement. Fipronil exhibited high horizontal toxicity and delayed topical toxicity, properties that are desirable in a broadcast treatment. Chlorfenapyr and thiamethoxam appeared best suited to use as mound treatments, as they had low horizontal toxicity and did not impede ant movement in barrier tests. At least one of the four tested rates of basil, citronella, lemon, peppermint, and tea tree oils were repellent to both ant species. In continuous exposure assays, citronella oil was toxic to both species, and peppermint and tea tree oils were toxic to Argentine ants. -

Abstract. This study investigates the evolutionary history of a hyperdiverse clade, the ant subfamily Myrmicinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), based on analyses of a data matrix comprising 251 species and 11 nuclear gene fragments. Under both maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods of inference, we recover a robust phylogeny that reveals six major clades of Myrmicinae, here treated as newly defined tribes and occur- ring as a pectinate series: Myrmicini, Pogonomyrmecini trib.n., Stenammini, Solenop- sidini, Attini and Crematogastrini. Because we condense the former 25 myrmicine tribes into a new six-tribe scheme, membership in some tribes is now notably different, espe- cially regarding Attini. We demonstrate that the monotypic genus Ankylomyrma is nei- ther in the Myrmicinae nor even a member of the more inclusive formicoid clade – rather it is a poneroid ant, sister to the genus Tatuidris (Agroecomyrmecinae). -

Individual tree crowns in lowland forests may support more than 30 ant species, yet we know little about the effects of epiphytes on ant diversity. We examined the composition of arboreal ant communities on Annona glabra trees and their interactions with the epiphytic orchid Caularthron bilamellatum in Panama. We surveyed the ants on 73 trees (45 with C. bilamellatum and 28 lacking epiphytes) and recorded their nest sites and behavioral dominance at baits. We found a total of 49 ant species (in 20 genera), ranging 1–9 species per tree. Trees with C. bilamellatum had higher average ( Æ SD) ant species richness (4.2 Æ 2.28) than trees without epiphytes (2.7 Æ 1.21). Hollow pseudobulbs (PBs) of C. bilamellatum were used as nest sites by 32 ant species, but only 43 percent of suitable PBs were occupied. Ant species richness increased with PB abundance in trees, but nest sites did not appear to be a limiting resource on A. -

SUMMARY The convergence of Zacryptocerus varians and Camponotus (Colobopsis) sp. is manifest in three ways: i)Structural convergence (shield-headed major workers, large eggs), ii)Qualitative behavioral convergence (high rate of oral trophallaxis, traffic in infrabuccal pellets, iii) Repertoire convergence (number of behavioral categories in common, behavioral distance). Methods of analyzing repertoire convergence using techniques borrowed from numerical taxonomy may be especially useful in obtaining quantitative measurements of the relative effects of phylogeny and ecology in social insect behavior. In constrast to the behavioral convergence of the minor workers, the major workers do not sh~w this convergence. The major 'workers of Colobopsis are not as behaviorally specialized as the major workers of Z. varians and in accordance xvith current ergonomic theory are relatively more numerous. An effort is made to account for the areas of convergence and divergence in features of their sociobiology.
