Page 2 Governor’s Message By Jack Buck—Indiana Society Governor

Dear Fellow Members,

It seems difficult to believe that it was three years ago that the nominating committee approached me and asked that I consider accepting the Governor nomination. Now, here I am writing my last Governor’s message and preparing to preside over a portion of next month’s meeting signaling the end of my term.

We are all very fortunate to be part of such a unique society. Too often, volunteer boards can be a chal- lenge to work with due to many hidden agendas. The best part of my term as Governor has been working with a fantastic Board of Assistants, the dedicated volunteers and a supportive Society membership. We truly have a dedicated group of volunteers who look out for the best interests of our Society. The last three years have been difficult for our country in a lot of ways, but we have persevered and continue to become stronger. In retrospect:

Our membership continues to grow

We now have an operational website www.indianamayflower.com

In spite of the tough economic times we have endured and we remain financially stable for years to come

Our “Pilgrim in the Schools” program continues to grow and because of generous donations we are able to offer grants to help offset the expense for interested schools

As we all have noticed, our newsletter gets better with every edition

We continue to offer college scholarships and we are accepting the challenge to secure long term funding to insure the long-term viability of this program

Our programming at our general meetings continues to be not just informative but entertaining as well

I personally have enjoyed watching the attendance at our Spring and Fall meetings continue to grow and I worry about the day we may outgrow the Woodstock Club. If and when this happens, it will be a good problem for our Society

It has been an honor for you to allow me to serve as your Governor and I would like to personally thank our entire mem- bership for entrusting me with this duty. I also ask that each of you consider becoming more active by volunteering for a board position or one of our committees. It really is a rewarding experience.

With kindest regards, Jack Buck Governor

Meet our New Historian—Jon Wardlow

Jon is a native of Indiana, growing up in Madison. He works as an engineer at Cummins in Colum- bus. Jon lives in Columbus with his wife Dianna and younger daughter Sarah. His older daughter Amy lives in Indy and graduated from the University of Indianapolis last May (thanks in part to the society's scholarship in 2005).

Jon is a 12th generation descendant of Mayflower passengers Mr. & Mrs. James Chilton. He first started seriously researching his family history in 1984. In 1986 he broke through his first "brick wall," reconnecting the Wardlow family of Indiana with the rest of the American Wardlow family. In 2003 Jon joined the Indiana Mayflower.

Jon is a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and the Berkshire Family History Association (Berkshire Co., Massachusetts).

In the past seven years, he has published three articles in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register; the first two were directly related to his own Mayflower research.

"Family Record of Ezra and Elizabeth Leonard of Raynham and Oakham, Massachusetts", Jan 2004, 158:66-67 "Genealogy of Samuel Peirce, First Settler of Zoar, Massachusetts", Apr-Jul 2007, 161:127-137, 199-208 "Revisiting the Family of Gershom Flagg of Woburn, Massachusetts", Jan-Apr 2009, 163:19-26, 139-146.

If you have any questions for our Historian, Jon may be contacted by email at [email protected]. Page 5 New Mayflower Lineages Opened The following information, taken from The Mayflower Quarterly December 2009, may be of interest to those people who have been researching secondary lineages. It was written by Paul S. Bumpus, the Historian Gen- eral, General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

At the General Congress of 2005, three of the women on the Mayflower , Elizabeth Fisher (wife of Stephen Hopkins), Mary Norris (wife of ) and Joan (Hurst) Rogers (wife of John Tilley) were recognized as acceptable lineage bearers, and we have been accepting these three women for membership and/or supple- mental filings since that time.

As of 1 January 2010 ALL passengers on the Mayflower , who have proven descendants, will be eligible to have claims of descent allowing membership and/or supplemental applications to be filed through them. .A few questioned connections will need further study 1 but, in general, the connections between mothers and chil- dren are fairly clear and lineages will be accepted through any clearly established mother and child relation- ship. A complete list of the wives and children who arrived on the Mayflower is found below:

Passengers on the Mayflower from whom descent is known Women on the Mayflower : Mrs. Mary (Norris) Allerton Mrs. Elinor Billington Mrs. Mary Brewster Mrs. James Chilton Mrs. Sarah Eaton Mrs. Edward Fuller Mrs. Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins Mrs. Alice Mullins (not proved to be Priscilla’s mother) Mrs. Joan (Hurst) Tilley (widow of Thomas Rogers) Mrs. Susanna White (later became Mrs. Susanna Winslow) signing of the Mayflower Compact by J L Ferris
