2018-Playoffs-Media-Guide-Season MAKE IT 4 YEARS IN A ROW: The Cavaliers (50-32) finished with the 4th-best record in the Eastern Conference and are headed to the postseason for the 4th straight season (22nd time in franchise history). • CENTRAL CHAMPS: The Cavaliers also won the Central Division title for the 4th straight season and just the 7th time in team history (75-76, 08-09, 09-10, 14-15, 15-16, 16- 17). They clinched the division title after a 123-109 win at New York on April 9. • ANOTHER 50-WIN SEASON: At 50-32, Cleveland notched their 4th straight 50-win season and 11th overall (88-89, 91-92, 92-93, 05-06, 06-07, 08-09, 09-10, 14-15, 15-16, 16-17 & 17-18). GETTING OFFENSIVE In 2017-18, the Cavs averaged 110.9 points (5th in NBA) on .476 shooting from the field (5th in NBA) and 23.4 assists (12th in CAVS HIGHEST POINTS PER GAME NBA). They topped the 100-point plateau on 66 of 82 games. ALL-TIME (SINGLE SEASON) CAVS YEAR PPG • THE CENTURY MARK STREAK: From Nov. 1-Dec. 21, the Cavs scored 100 points or more in 26 straight games, their 2nd- longest streak in team history (36 straight from 1/15/80-3/3/80). From Nov. 1-Jan. 28, the Cavs scored at least 100 points in 20 1979-80 114.1 consecutive home games, their longest streak since 1988-89 (27 straight home games, 11/19/88-3/2/89). 2017-18 110.9 • 110+ & 120+ POINTS: The Cavs had 110+ points on 46 occasions (38-8), including 120 points or more 21 times (19-2). From 2016-17 110.3 Feb. 7-13 & from March 19-25, the Cavs scored at least 120 points in a FRANCHISE-RECORD 4 straight games. 1991-92 108.9 • 130+ & 140+ POINTS: Cleveland put up 130+ points 5 times (4-1), including a season-high 140 points in their overtime win over Minnesota on Feb. 7. That was the most points the Cavs have ever scored at The Q (prev. 137, CAVS MOST CONSECUTIVE GAMES 11/23/16 vs. POR). WITH 100+ POINTS (SINGLE SEASON) • EFFICIENT OFFENSE: This past season, the Cavs had 4 games with percentages of at least .500 from the field, CAVS YEAR GAMES 100-POINT STREAK/DATE .400 from three-point range and .900 from the charity stripe. Cleveland only accomplished that feat twice last season 1979-80 36 (1/15/80-3/3/80) (11/25/16 vs. DAL, 2/8/17 at IND), one time in 2015-16 (4/5/16 at MIL) and none in 2014-15. 2017-18 26 (11/1/17-12/21/17) • 30 ASSISTS: Cleveland dished out at least 30 assists on 7 occasions this past season, including 3 straight games 1988-89 19 (12/2/88-1/11/89) from Dec. 14-17. That was their longest since March 8-16, 1993 (4 straight). (Elias Sports Bureau) 1984-85 18 (1/19/85-2/20/85) • 50 PERCENT: The Cavs shot at least .500 from the field 35 times (27-8). They had a stretch of 5 straight games 1979-80 17 (10/13/79-11/16/79) with .500 shooting (Feb. 7-22) for the first time since the 2009-10 season (Feb. 25, 2010-March 5, 2010). The team record is six, done twice: January 14-24, 1989; and again from February 18, 1989 – March 2, 1989. (Elias) • 60 PERCENT FROM THE FIELD AND THREE: In a 132-129 win over the Raptors on March 21, the Wine & Gold shot a season-high .603 (47-78), while also knocking down a season-high .625 (15-24) from three-point range. The last time Cleveland shot at least .600 from the field and .600 from beyond the arc in the same game was on March 16, 2003 versus Utah (50-83, .602 FG%/ 7-11, .636 3FG%). The last time the Cavaliers shot .600 from the field in any game was Dec. 21, 2014 against Memphis (.606, 46-76). HOLDING ON AFTER THREE QUARTERS Cleveland went undefeated when they led after three quarters at 39-0 (1.000), the only NBA team with a perfect record this past season. They also became the first team since 1954-55 to go undefeated in a single season when leading after three periods of play. The previous best percentage after leading through three quarters was .985 (64-1) by the Bulls in 1995-96 (STATS). THE LONG BALL CAVS MOST CONSECUTIVE GAMES Cleveland averaged 12.0 three-pointers made (3rd in NBA) and shot .372 from long distance (6th in NBA). WITH 10+ THREE-POINTERS (SINGLE SEASON) CAVS YEAR GAMES 10+ 3FGM STREAK/DATE • 10+ THREES: The Cavs made 10 threes or more 64 times this past season (2nd-most in team history), including 26 straight games from Nov. 9-Jan. 2. Their 26-game streak is a team record for consecutive games with 10 or more 2017-18 26 (11/9/17-1/2/18) threes (prev. 16 twice, 10/25/16-11/29/16 and 3/9/16-4/5/16) and is tied for the 3rd-longest streak in NBA history (Boston, 26 straight from 1/21/2017-3/15/2017). Only Houston has recorded longer stretches of consecutive games 2016-17 16 (10/25/16-11/29/16) with 10 or more threes (55 straight from 10/25/2017-2/25/18 and 27 straight from 10/28/2016-12/17/2016). 2015-16 16 (3/9/16-4/5/16) • 20+ TRIPLES: The Cavaliers made at least 20 threes on 2 occasions this season (21 vs. MIN on 2/7/18 and 20 vs. ATL on 12/12/17. Instead, this study redirects focus toward the neo-religious nature of modern spirituality; that is, the fulfillment of Thomas Luckmann’s prediction that a significant aspect of modern spirituality would concern the need to construct a “self”the constantly shifting work of forming personal identity and enhancing self understanding. As such, internal commitments and intense devotion may perform as a de facto “invisible religion” in the lives of people. As popular culture provides useful texts toward satisfying this ongoing work, professional sports can act as a conduit of both personal and collective self understanding for “highly identified fans,” subsequently operating as an invisible religion within their lives.
