2019 Toledo Mud Hens Doug Mientkiewicz • Manager Full Name: Douglas Andrew Mientkiewicz Born: June 19, 1974 Birthplace: Toledo, OH Height: 6’2” Weight: 195 Bats: Right Throws: Right Coaching-Managerial Career: Enters his second season as the skipper for the Mud Hens…Made coaching debut as the hitting caoch for the Pioneer League Odgen Raptors in 2012...Managed Fort Myers Miracle from 2013-14...Managed Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts in 2015-16 before returning as manager of the Miracle in 2017. Managed Toledo to IL-West title with a 73-66 record and the first playoff appearance since 2007. Playing Career: Played 12 years in the majors, primaritly with the Minnesota Twins with other stints with the Royals, Mets, Pirates, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Yankees...Compiled a .271 lifetime batting average...Was part of Twins team that won three straight AL Central titles from 2002-04. Mike Hessman • Hitting Coach Coach Full Name: Michael Steven Hessman Born: March 5, 1978 BIrthplace: Fountain Valley, CA Height: 6’5” Weight: 215 Bats: Right Throws: Right Coaching Career: Hessman has remained in the Tigers organization as a coach since retiring after the 2015 season. Last year he served as hitting coach of Detroit’s Eastern League affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania. Playing Career: A member of the Mud Hens’ back-to-back Governors Cup Championship teams in 2005 and 2006, Hessman hit a total of 433 home runs during his minor league career between 1996 and 2015. That includes 288 home runs with four teams in the International League (Toledo, Richmond, Buffalo, Louisville), with 184 of those coming in a Toledo uniform. Hessman was also named the 2007 IL Most Valuable Player, hitting .254 with 31 home runs and 101 RBI while leading Toledo to a divisional title. He was inducted into the IL Hall of Fame last season. 2019 Season 1 2019 Toledo Mud Hens Juan Nieves • Pitching Coach Full Name: Juan Manuel Nieves Born: January 5, 1965 BIrthplace: Santurce, Puerto Rico Height: 6’3” Weight: 175 Bats: Left Throws: Left Coaching Career: Nieves joins the Mud Hens following three seasons as pitching coach of the Miami Marlins. He served in the New York Yankees minor league system from 1992-1996 before joining the Chicago White Sox minor league system for eight seasons. He then became bullpen coach for the Chicago White Sox for five seasons. Playing Career: He played for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1986-1988, and threw a no-hitter on April 15, 1987 against Baltimore. Basilio Cabrera • Third Base Coach Full Name: Basilio (Solano) Cabrera Born: November 28, 1966 Birthplace: Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic Height: 6’0” Weight: 175 Bats: Right Throws: Right Coaching Career: Cabrera is in his fourth year on the coaching staff, after 8 seasons as the manager of the Gulf Coast League Tigers, the rookie-level affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Playing Career: The outfielder played Minor League baseball for seven seasons (1986-1992), all within the Tigers organization. 2 Toledo Mud Hens Baseball 2019 Toledo Mud Hens Chris McDonald • Trainer Experience: McDonald returns for a fifth season with the Mud Hens and 16th season within the Detroit Tigers organization. McDonald has worked his way up the ranks through the Tigers organization, servicing the Gulf Coast League Tigers, Connecticut Tigers, and the Advanced-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. McDonald was then promoted to the Erie SeaWolves in Double-A baseball, where he worked for eight years. Named the Eastern League Trainer of the Year in 2011, McDonald also spent seven years as an Athletic Trainer in the Dominican Republic and one year in Venezuela. McDonald graduated from Bowling Green State University. Jeff Mathers • Strength Coach Experience: Joined Tigers organization in January 2014. LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT In 2016 the Greater Columbus Arts Council made substantial progress toward building 84,031 a more sustainable arts sector in Columbus. An unprecedented year for the bed tax in 2016 resulted in more support to artists and ARTIST PROFILE arts organizations than ever before. Twenty-seven Operating Support grants were awarded totaling $3.1 million and 57 grants totaling $561,842 in Project Support. VIDEO VIEWS The Art Makes Columbus/Columbus Makes Art campaign generated nearly 400 online, print and broadcast stories, $9.1 million in publicity and 350 million earned media impressions featuring the arts and artists in Columbus. We held our first annual ColumbusMakesArt.com Columbus Open Studio & Stage October 8-9, a self-guided art tour featuring 26 artist studios, seven stages and seven community partners throughout Columbus, providing more than 1,400 direct engagements with artists in their creative spaces. We hosted another outstanding Columbus Arts Festival on the downtown riverfront 142% and Columbus’ beautiful Scioto Greenways. We estimated that more than 450,000 people enjoyed fine artists from across the country, and amazing music, dance, INCREASE theater, and local cuisine at the city’s free welcome-to-summer event. VanMeter, 21, split the 2016 season at San Diego's Class A Advanced and Double-A affiliates, batting a combined .251/.331/.403 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs. He primarily plays second base and third base but also has shortstop experience. Torrens, a catcher, was picked second overall in the Rule 5 Draft and flipped to the Padres later in the day. The Reds also received cash in the deal.
