Managed Toledo to IL-West title with a 73-66 record and the first playoff appearance since 2007. Mike Hessman • Hitting Coach Coach Full Name: Michael Steven Hessman Born: March 5, 1978 BIrthplace: Fountain Valley, CA Height: 6’5” Weight: 215 Bats: Right Throws: Right Coaching Career: Hessman has remained in the Tigers organization as a coach since retiring after the 2015 season. Last year he served as hitting coach of Detroit’s Eastern League affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania. Playing Career: A member of the Mud Hens’ back-to-back Governors Cup Championship teams in 2005 and 2006, Hessman hit a total of 433 home runs during his minor league career between 1996 and 2015. That includes 288 home runs with four teams in the International League (Toledo, Richmond, Buffalo, Louisville), with 184 of those coming in a Toledo uniform. Hessman was also named the 2007 IL Most Valuable Player, hitting .254 with 31 home runs and 101 RBI while leading Toledo to a divisional title. He was inducted into the IL Hall of Fame last season. 2019 Season 1 2019 Toledo Mud Hens Juan Nieves • Pitching Coach Full Name: Juan Manuel Nieves Born: January 5, 1965 BIrthplace: Santurce, Puerto Rico Height: 6’3” Weight: 175 Bats: Left Throws: Left Coaching Career: Nieves joins the Mud Hens following three seasons as pitching coach of the Miami Marlins. He served in the New York Yankees minor league system from 1992-1996 before joining the Chicago White Sox minor league system for eight seasons. He then became bullpen coach for the Chicago White Sox for five seasons. Playing Career: He played for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1986-1988, and threw a no-hitter on April 15, 1987 against Baltimore. Basilio Cabrera • Third Base Coach Full Name: Basilio (Solano) Cabrera Born: November 28, 1966 Birthplace: Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic Height: 6’0” Weight: 175 Bats: Right Throws: Right Coaching Career: Cabrera is in his fourth year on the coaching staff, after 8 seasons as the manager of the Gulf Coast League Tigers, the rookie-level affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Playing Career: The outfielder played Minor League baseball for seven seasons (1986-1992), all within the Tigers organization. 2 Toledo Mud Hens Baseball 2019 Toledo Mud Hens Chris McDonald • Trainer Experience: McDonald returns for a fifth season with the Mud Hens and 16th season within the Detroit Tigers organization. McDonald has worked his way up the ranks through the Tigers organization, servicing the Gulf Coast League Tigers, Connecticut Tigers, and the Advanced-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. McDonald was then promoted to the Erie SeaWolves in Double-A baseball, where he worked for eight years. Named the Eastern League Trainer of the Year in 2011, McDonald also spent seven years as an Athletic Trainer in the Dominican Republic and one year in Venezuela. McDonald graduated from Bowling Green State University. Jeff Mathers • Strength Coach Experience: Joined Tigers organization in January 2014. Received a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science at Ithaca College.
