In the midst of pink wigs and tutus Saturday, Becky Dickerson was met with cheers when she raised her pink hat.

"I found out in June I have breast cancer, so here I am," said Dickerson. "Bald and all!"

A record-breaking crowd walked with Dickerson in her fight Saturday morning, pounding the pavement at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in City Park. Organizers estimate that over 10,000 participants helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause.

"These are critical in places like New Orleans in particular, where the rates of breast cancer are much higher than in other parts of teh country," said Frank Liantonio, president of the Susan G. Komen New Orleans affiliate.

"It just hits home for people who have dealt with it, whose family members and themselves have had cancer," said Toni Boudreaux, whose mother died of cancer.

Race for the Cure honorary survivor Allene Thaller encouraged women to get mammograms, stressing the power of early detection. "I was early stage one, and the only reason they found it was bc I was busy taking care of my family and was too busy to schedule my mammogram, so my daughter scheduled a mammogram for me," said Thaller.

And men have a role, too.

"We just have to stand beside [women] and give them our moral support as much as we can," said Kenneth Ray Gordon, who participated in the walk. "And make sure we don't get it either because it does affect some men, too."

Whether they were celebrating survival or bracing for to fight, the race gave those affected by breast cancer a chance to reflect.

"It changes your life, it changes your outlook on life, the important things become very important, and the less important things, you just kind of roll with the punches," said Thaller.

And that's what Dickerson's doing, as she continues her fight against stage 3C breast cancer.

"What you have to go through, the sickness and the chemo is not to great, and you feel bad," said Dickerson. "I felt bad this morning, but I came out anyway."

"They tell me to just be strong, and be positive, and have faith, and that's what I have," said Dickerson.

NEW ORLEANS -- A sea of pink washed over City Park on Saturday as thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters turned out to raise money for research. The emotional day was filled with cheers and tears. One by one, a record-breaking 12,000 breast cancer survivors and supporters crossed the finish line in the Susan G. Komen New Orleans Race for the Cure 5k Walk and Run at City Park. "It's a beautiful thing that they do, that they devote their time to," said breast cancer survivor Mary Waltons. "All the money is going to go for research, and there will be more survivors like us." Delene Lebue had a message for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. "It was a very tough road, but I just want to tell every woman out there, be strong and fight and you can overcome this. As a group, you can overcome this," she said. Co-chair of the race Karen stone said that to date, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has granted $2.4 million to support local screenings, treatment and educational programs. "With any sort of serious illness, it's important to have community and a support network," she said. Organizers said 75 percent of funds raised for the event stay in the area. The other 25 percent goes to breast cancer research nationally. The foundation gives grants to organizations that provide mammograms to people who don't have health care.

The first picture is of Eva Dreiling, Sophia Shahlaei, Anna Grace and Mia Dreiling. The girls set up a table with "Cupcakes and Pink Lemonade for the Cure". The cupcakes and lemonade were given out to people who donated to the Cure. The girls had a great time giving Breast Health Awareness cards to girls and guys passing by Calhoun Street on their way to and from Tulane University and Loyola University. They even had people pull over in their cars on their way home from work to make a donation. All of the neighbors and students were very impressed by their enthusiasm and commitment to Susan G. Komen. It was such a success that day that the next day Anna Grace Dreiling, Gigi Browne, Grace Gootee, Grant Browne, Mia Dreiling and Ella Jones set up their own table out front. Once again, community members and University students stopped by to donate to the Cure.

Shine a Light: In the Pink

Most of us will remain faithful to black and gold, but pink takes center stage in October. It’s the color of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that campaign is celebrating 25 years of awareness. There’ll be pink ribbons and pink T-shirts, and many Web sites and blogs will show their support for breast cancer awareness by turning their sites pink.

Locally, Megan Morphy, a registered nurse, is making the lives of New Orleans women better through her compassionate caring and her outreach efforts for breast cancer awareness.

She assists with several breast cancer support groups and Look Good Feel Better workshops. Her community outreach effort successfully spreads the word about prevention, breast health and breast
