Concept Note Upscaling biogas technology for cooking in iLembe District municipality, KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) Sara Trærup1, Prakriti Naswa1, Kelly Dorkenoo1 , Oscar Mokotedi2 and Thando Ndarana3, Climate Technology Centre and Network Response Identification Number: 201600001 July 2018 1 UNEP DTU Partnership, Technical University of Denmark 2 Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) 3 University of Pretoria 1 Introduction The iLembe District Municipality comprises four local municipalities, namely Mandeni, Ndwedwe, Maphumulo and KwaDukuza. Most of these local municipalities are rural, and the conditions therein might be suitable for biogas technology implementation. Khanyisa Projects4, in collaboration with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) piloted biogas technology implementation for cooking, lighting, heating water and other needs in Ndwedwe Local Municipality. For the project, twenty-six households were selected according to certain requirements5. The requirements were as follows: 1. Each household should have two to three cows that they keep in a kraal overnight. This is to allow ease of collection of manure for ingesting into the biogas digester. A digester needs between 20 and 30 kg of manure daily to produce enough gas for a household to cook between 2 – 3 hours a day. 2. The households were also required to have a reliable source of water. Between 30 and 50 litres of water per day are required to operate a digester. Where water supply is problematic, the project could link with the rainwater-harvesting project, to render a household with livestock but no water suitable for consideration as a beneficiary of the project. Based on the lessons learnt from the pilot study, it is proposed that the project be structured as follows: 1.

This is the fourth edition of the quarterly reports which are unique to iLembe as we are the only district municipality to publish such a report. The overall objective of this project is to present economic indicators and economic intelligence to assist Enterprise iLembe in driving its mandate, which is to promote trade and investment and to drive economic development in the District of iLembe. This quarter’s edition not only describes historical trends but also takes a brief look at the future of iLembe through the eyes of district planners. Their plan looks forward 30 years to an iLembe that is thriving of the back of large scale agricultural, manufacturing, resort, and renewable energy investments. The result is a highly connected and integrated district, where Ballito and KwaDukuza have formed a metro, and the north coast has become the tourism destination of choice. Readers are asked to comment on this future scenario and the steps needed to get there. This quarter’s report provides also an update on the work we, at Enterprise iLembe, are doing.

Understanding Childcare Choices amongst Low-Income Employed Mothers in Urban and Rural KwaZulu-Natal By Nonzuzo Mbokazi Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Town Department of Sociology Cape of Supervisors: Professor Elena Moore and Professor Jeremy Seekings UniversityUniversity of Cape Town 2019 i The copyright of this thesis vests Townin the author. University Abstract This study explains how low-income employed mothers navigate care strategies for their young children (0-4 years). The study considers the constraints within which they make ‘choices’ about caring for their children using the market, kin and state. In addition, the study argues that these ‘choices’ are immensely constrained and that the low-income employed mothers have no real choice. For many women, the ‘feminisation of the workforce’ – the growing number of women in paid work – has entailed enormous stress and pressure, as they combine strenuous paid work with the demands of mothering. Low-income employed mothers must balance paid with unpaid work, in ways that are different to women who have more resources. This study analyses how women do this within households where gendered roles and a gender hierarchy continue to prevail. In some cases, low-income employed mothers must take on not only do the ‘work’ of managing the household but also the additional ‘work’ of soliciting the fathers for financial support and involvement in at least some aspects of their children’s lives.

16 January 2009 Mr Sibusiso Ndebele KwaZulu-Natal Premier Premier’s Office Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal PO Box 412 Pietermaritzburg 3200 Re: Forced eviction of 10 000 families from eMacambini for AmaZulu World Dear Premier Ndebele, The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) is an international human rights non- governmental organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, with offices throughout the world. COHRE has consultative status with the United Nations and Observer Status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. COHRE works to promote and protect the right to adequate housing for everyone, everywhere, including preventing or remedying forced evictions. COHRE is deeply concerned about the threatened forced eviction of up to 10 000 families of the Macambini community from their communal land in rural KwaZulu-Natal, to make way for AmaZulu World, a multi-billion Rand project proposed by Dubai-based property development group Ruwaad Holdings. The Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal and King Goodwill Zwelithini (trustee of the Ingonyama Trust Board that administers the Macambini communal land) have endorsed this project. In May 2008, the KwaZulu-Natal Premier signed a memorandum of understanding with Ruwaad Holdings, and in October 2008, attended the Dubai Cityscape 2008 real estate exhibition together with King Goodwill Zwelithini for the official unveiling of the project. COHRE has learned that the proposed AmaZulu World entertainment and mixed-use development will include an internationally branded theme park, hotels, shopping malls, residential complexes, golf courses and a giant statue of King Shaka, and is boasted as being the largest construction project ever to be undertaken in Africa.
