Alpine Ski Club works closely with Alpin and shares the goal of ensuring that any child entering the ski racing system is provided every opportunity to experience the necessary building blocks in order to reach the desired highest levels of the sport. Alpine Canada has produced a document entitled Alpine Integration Model or AIM. As AIM is a well-known term in the ski racing community, the Long-Term Skier Development (LTSD) guide for ski racing will be addressed as AIM2WIN. Although the primary objective of AIM2WIN is to produce greater numbers of ski racers capable of achieving at the highest level, it also provides a platform for clubs and coaches to encourage and support participants at every level to fulfill their potential and maintain a lifelong involvement in the sport of .

The focus of Alpine’s ski racing program is on skill development and technical excellence. Racing requires a commitment from each athlete to work hard and attend races. Training groups/teams will be selected based on age, skiing skills, and coaches’ discretion. Please note that because there are no formal time trials, participation in holiday camps are included for team placement and covered in the program price. • Early registration assures a quality program so please register by the associated date. • Programs will run provided we have enough registrants to allow for proper execution. • Downhill, giant slalom (G.S.) and slalom suits are not permitted in U8 and U10 races.

REGISTRATION POLICY Enrolment is guaranteed when registrations are received by the Club prior to the regular deadline date. After the deadline, registrations will be placed on a waiting list and processed subject to program availability. Junior Programs

U16

U16 is for athletes aged 14 and 15 (as of December 31). U16 athletes begin their high- performance training through the individual program, offered in two variations that continue to develop strong technical and racing skills, but that differ by commitment and competitive intensity: SOD CUP/weekend (moderate) and OCUP (high). Fall camps and season camps are a component of the U16 program.

The proven elements of every successful ski racer are effective coordination with their academic endeavours, time on snow, and physical and mental training. Collingwood has a high concentration of ski racers and the lowest number of ski days of any skiing centre in the world. Consequently, it becomes imperative to spend time away skiing in order to stay competitive with other provinces. Away training provides exposure to a variety of terrain and increases the number of days on snow. The mid-December camp is mandatory for the O Cup/All-Inclusive program; otherwise camps are optional, however attending one of the camps offered in summer and Copper Mountain or Tignes, France in November is strongly recommended.

WEEKEND/SOD CUP PROGRAM Season The SOD Cup is the Southern Ontario Division race series. As in past seasons it consists of 4-5 race starts that align with the needs for each age group. Racing will continue in much the same way as the experience in the U14 program. Holiday training camp (Dec. 27-Jan. 3, excluding Jan. 1) is included, where team selection will take place. Time on snow is always recommended and attending pre-season camps will help athletes prepare for the season. Sat. 9:00-3:30; Sun. 9:00-3:00 • Lunch 11:00-noon

Price: $1,610.00; after Nov. 15: $1,932.00; after Dec. 15: $2,093.00 Please pay Alpine Ontario (AOA) fees online directly to AOA at alpineontario.ca.

ALL-INCLUSIVE/OCUP PROGRAM

O Cup is a province-wide racing program that consists of one midwinter series, three mini- series/invitational races and one final series. From the O Cup series, athletes may qualify for Can Am and Whistler Cup races. This program offers the individual athletes high performance training with the goal of producing the most successful U16 athletes on and off the hill in Canada. Training at this level is a season commitment of a minimum of three days/week, extending to four for most second-year U16’s. This program requires a commitment to not only race training on snow, but also to a dry-land program that will help ensure the fitness level and strength required to be successful. The athlete should commit to off-season dry-land training as well as both on- and off-snow training from November to the end of April. We are very excited to welcome former national ski team member and Olympian Rob Crossan as the program’s head coach. We will continue to work with other clubs to provide the best possible training environments.

Fall fitness testing as outlined by AOA is mandatory.

The program includes: • Coaching • Fall dryland training

NSA – NATIONAL FIS RACING & ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The National Ski Academy’s mission is to “provide an environment for talented student athletes to maximize their individual potential through the pursuit of alpine ski racing excellence, academic achievement and personal growth.”

The NSA is a not-for-profit, Ontario Ministry of Education inspected private school with all teachers certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. The program for student athletes in grades 9 to post grad is an all-inclusive which includes camps, race fees, travel and accommodation, transportation, coaching, fitness and injury prevention and uniform. Student athletes will receive up to 130 days on snow and up to 35 FIS race starts following the AIM guidelines defined by Alpine Canada (ACA).

NSA’s “Education that travels” begins with classes in mid-August at the NSA in Collingwood along with a short team-building trip to a local camp and then continues when the teachers travel to Switzerland with the student athletes for the 5-week camp that includes approximately 30 training days on the glacier in Saas-Fee and an educational excursion (past trips have included Paris, Rome and Geneva). During the time in Switzerland, NSA teachers deliver the first semester curriculum and a heavy emphasis is placed on physical conditioning and injury prevention.

After returning from Europe and prior to the competitive season, FIS athletes will continue their on-snow training at the NSA’s western partner, Red Mountain’s Legacy Training Centre where teachers continue to work with students to complete their first semester courses prior to Christmas. Athletes will compete in the pre-Christmas race series either in BC or Quebec depending on snow conditions and qualification criteria.

From January through March a typical weekday (when not travelling for a race series) involves a high intensity on-snow training session from 8:30-noon, lunch, afternoon classes, dry-land training, dinner and evening classes and supervised study hall. In the spring semester students complete their final courses at the NSA combined with dry land training in the gym as well as other outdoor education activities such as biking and hikes in the area. Both day student and boarding (for an additional cost) options are available.

The NSA is located at 200 Oak Street in Collingwood. For more information please visit www.nsa.on.ca, email [email protected] or call 705.444.1617.

This format is intended to encourage Fun and Glory participants to join in when they can and have some fun on the ridge. It’s a great way to meet fellow teammates and hang out with other interclub adult racers.

The per-start price covers morning gate training at Alpine, two race-day runs (at different clubs on the ridge, including lift tickets), an après with Druxy’s sandwiches and beer/wine, hanging out with a great fun team, discounts on merchandise at local ski shops, and a rocking end-of- season party.

There are four regular season races and one finals race. The schedule is currently being determined but will typically start in mid-January and conclude at the end of February.

Adult Programs

There will be seven Escarpment clubs participating and you will be racing against others in your age and gender category (similar to our Club championships). Bib numbers are also based on age and gender (i.e., the older you are, the lower your start number). The winning team of the race is determined by adding up each racer's points based on how they finished in their category − you get points for just completing the run.

The interclub adult race program is a great and inexpensive way to get additional gate training and racing on the ridge, as well as enjoying the camaraderie and experience of meeting like- minded colleagues from other clubs.

To participate, please sign up online through which we can track interest. Participants will be billed at the end of the season based on the number of starts.

Price: $32/start
