This tour can also easily be combined with our Central Thailand tour which runs immediately before this one starts (Central Thailand: Shorebird Spectacle and Jungle Birding 3rd – 12th February 2020 – think Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Nordmann’s Greenshank, Chinese Egret, Blue Pitta, Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo, Silver Pheasant, and Siamese Fireback etc. for that tour!). These tours have been designed to focus on the amazing birding that Thailand has to offer during the northern winter, set in a beautiful country with incredibly welcoming people and some of the best food in the world too. We will commence our experience of Northern Thailand birding with a visit to Doi Inthanon, the country’s highest mountain. The unique set of habitats here offer us some excellent birds as well as letting us come to grips with some of the commoner northern species. Special birds here may include Rufous-throated Partridge, Mountain Bamboo Partridge, Black-tailed Crake, Spectacled Barwing, Himalayan Bluetail, White-browed Shortwing, Dark-sided Thrush, White-crowned, Slaty-backed, and Black-backed Forktails, and Red-headed Trogon. The dry, lowland forest at the foot of the mountain can be full of woodpeckers, and the stunning Black-headed Woodpecker, huge Great Slaty Woodpecker, and tiny Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker can all be found, along with White-rumped Falcon, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Blossom and Grey-headed Parakeets, and Burmese Nuthatch. -

Survey Key Findings In the context of national obligations to the Convention on Biological Diversity; and in the recognition of the poor quality of the original assessment in June 2014 which found only 16 bird species in total and concluded that the proposed road-widening would cause an “insignificant” impact to wildlife and no impact to Endangered species (because there are no Endangered animal species in the area), this independent bird survey conducted on June 10th and 11th and again from June 14th-19th 2019 concludes that forested habitat along the Bijarim Ro is of high national and probably of high international value to avian biodiversity conservation. Although this survey was limited in time and scope (so that the populations of many species were likely under-recorded), and very little time was available to conduct additional research for this report and for translation (five days total), our survey findings include: (1) 46 species of bird in total, including six species of national conservation concern; (2) 13 territories of the nationally Endangered Fairy Pitta Pitta nympha and 23 territories of the nationally Endangered Black Paradise Flycatcher Terpsiphone atrocaudata within 500m of the Bijarim Ro, with several of these territories within 50m of the road; (3) Three territories of the nationally and globally Endangered Japanese Night Heron Gorsachius goisagi, at least two of which were within 500m of the Bijarim Ro. -

The habitat is mainly comprises fishery ponds, and Digha-Shankarpur Estuary, West Bengal: An addition open sunlit areas with sparse vegetation. The site was about 500 to the avifauna of mainland India m from the seacoast. The Oriental Plover Charadrius veredus is a widely distributed wader that breeds during April–July, in the dry steppes, arid grasslands, salt pans, and desert habitats of southern Siberia, Russia, Mongolia, and north-eastern China (Ozerskaya & Zabelin 2006; Stewart et al. 2007; Hayman et al. 2011) and migrates Both: Arajush Payra southwards along the South-east Asian coasts to spend the winter in Indonesia and north-western Australia (Branson & Minton 2006; Stewart et al. 2007). While birding on 26 October 2020 at the Digha-Shankarpur Estuary (21.65°N, 87.56°E; 1 m asl) in Purba Medinipur District, 95A, B. The Oriental Plover was spotted amidst fishery ponds. West Bengal, India, I spotted a single Oriental Plover foraging on the ground at the periphery of coastal fishery ponds, alongside a Pacific Golden PloverPluvialis fulva. I first photographed it [94A, Oriental Plover is considered a very rare passage migrant in B] at 1650 h on 08 November 2020, at the periphery of a fish South-east Asia (Robson 2011). There is only one record of this culture pond. It was regularly sighted and photographed from 09 species from India, from an unknown locality in the Andaman to 13 November 2020, and on 16 November 2020. Islands, of a specimen collected by Dr. -

SOUTH KOREA 22 October – 3 November, 2018 Sandy Darling, Jeni Darling, Tom Thomas Most tours to South Korea occur in May for the spring migration or in late fall or winter for northern birds that winter in South Korea. This trip was timed in late October and early November to try see both summer residents and winter arrivals, and was successful in doing so. Birds were much shyer than in North America and often were visible only briefly, so that, for example, we saw few thrushes although they could be heard. This report has been written by Sandy and includes photos from both Tom (TT) and Sandy (SD). Sandy saw 166 species adequately of which 57 were life birds. When one includes birds heard, seen by the leader or others, or not seen well enough to count (BVD), the total was about 184. From trip reports it was clear that the person to lead the tour was Dr Nial Moores, Director of Birds Korea, an NGO working to improve the environment, especially for birds, in Korea. Nial has twenty years of experience in Korea, knows where birds are, and has ears and eyes that are exceptional. He planned the trip, made all the arrangements, found birds that we would not have found on our own and was our interface with Koreans, few of whom speak English. Nial also had to rejig the itinerary when strong winds led to the cancellation of a ferry to Baekryeong Island. We drove the vehicles - confidence was needed in dealing with city traffic, which was as aggressive as other trip reports said! Some of the highlights of the trip were: About 40,000 massed shore birds on Yubu Island, including the rare Spoonbill Sandpiper, a life bird for Tom. -

The survey area, which lies at the geographical centre of the island of Borneo, consists mainly of primary forest in hilly terrain, and this Is the first detailed study that has been made In the hills of Kalimantan for many decades. Aweek was also spent in montane forest at 800-1000 m. An appendix lists 226 species that were recorded. The avifauna includes 15 Bornean endemics, and extensions to known range are made for Splzaetus alboniger, Arborophila hyperythra and Megalaima eximia. Data are provided also on 20 species for which there are no recent Kalimantan records. While species described as 'slope specialists' predominated, the presence of some 26 'extreme lowland specialists' may have significance for conservation, for example Lophura erythrophthalma, Melanoperdix nigra. Pitta baudi, Malacopteron albogulare and Pityriasis gymnocephala.
