Julia Kristeva’s ‘Culture of Revolt’ and (Post) Modern Religious Subjectivity by Bonnie de Bruijn A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto © Copyright by Bonnie de Bruijn 2016 Julia Kristeva’s ‘Culture of Revolt’ and (Post) Modern Religious Subjectivity Bonnie de Bruijn Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This study offers a close reading of Julia Kristeva’s theories of ‘intimate revolt’ and ‘revolt culture’ and applies them to discussions of religious subjectivity. Decidedly non-militaristic, intimate revolt is reconceived in psychoanalytic and literary terms to mean an ongoing process of introspection and interrogation. The notion is derived from a multi-faceted and dynamic view of the mind, which, I submit, can broaden our conceptualization of religious subjectivity in popular discourse and vis-à-vis other psychoanalytic interpretations of religion. Indeed, Kristeva’s seemingly ambiguous treatment of Christianity is better understood in light of her theory of intimate revolt, which accepts and encourages working through competing ideas. Taking seriously the socio-political implications of intimate revolt, the overarching questions of this project are whether or not religion can fit into Kristeva’s vision of revolt culture, and, if so, what it might look like. I argue that, while she privileges aesthetic and psychoanalytic forms of revolt, Kristeva leaves open the possibility of intimate revolt in religion, particularly through her discussions of ‘the sacred’ and Christian mysticism. Finally, I survey progressive Christianity and John Caputo’s postmodern religion to identify potential examples of religious subjects who contribute to a culture of revolt. -

REVISTA PLÉYADE 10/ ISSN: 0718-655X / JULIO - DICIEMBRE 2012/ PP. 37-66 The Construction of Political Subjectivity: The Case of Immigrant Workers in Slovenia* Andreja Vezovnik** University of Ljubljana A B S T R A C T This article deals with the political subjectivation and desubjectivation of immigrant workers in Slovenia. It explores ontic and ontological views on their subjectivation by framing them in the socio-historical context of post-Yugoslavian migration dynamics. At the ontic level a Critical Discourse Analysis of media texts is presented showing how the political subjectivation and desubjectivation of immigrant workers is constructed in public discourse. The article explores discursive strategies of victimization, reification, animalisation and subjectivation. The article explores the notion of (de-)subjectivation at the ontological level using the Laclauian logic of naming to explore the political representation process. La construcción de la subjetividad política: el caso de los tra- bajadores inmigrantes en Eslovenia Este artículo trata sobre la subjetivación y desubjetivación política de los trabajadores inmigrantes en Eslovenia. Explora las perspectivas ónticas y ontológicas de su subjetivación en el marco del contexto socio-histórico de las dinámicas migratorias de la post-Yugoslavia. En el nivel óntico, se realiza un Análisis Crítico del Discurso de los textos de los medios en el que se muestra cómo la subjetivación y desubjetivación política de los trabajadores inmigrantes es construida en el discurso público. El artículo explora la noción de (de) subjetivación en el nivel ontológico usando la lógica del nombrar de Laclau para explorar el proceso de representación política. -

It focuses on the way in which Freud divides fear and envy between the sexes, allocating the emotion of (castration) fear to men, and that of (penis) envy to women. On the one hand, the problems of this construction are pointed out, but on the other hand, it is shown that even a much-maligned myth may still provide food for thought. Then, four critiques of Freud which have been articulated by prominent feminist psychoanalysts — Karen Horney, Nancy Chodorow, Luce Irigaray, and Jessica Benjamin — are presented, as well as the alternative visions of sexual identities which these thinkers have developed. -

This unit on feminist critiques of knowledge focuses on the disciplines of philosophy, literature and psychoanalysis, areas of study which fall under the rubric of humanities. These disciplines individually and collectively explore the meaning and implications of what it means to be human (derived from the term ‘humanitas’). Each discipline offers varying sets of frames or fixes on the world with its/their concomitant worldviews. Here, we will examine the assumptions underlying these disciplinary frameworks and scrutinize these assumptions (which are often unstated) from a variety of feminist perspectives. The effect of exploring these disciplines from feminist perspectives invariably results in disturbing and radically questioning our familiar understandings of traditional disciplinary frameworks. What, then, is the value of formally revisiting this work? I argue that returning to this particular series of lectures and engaging with it directly1 helps us to properly understand, interpret, and respond to current global political phenomena, particularly when it comes to race relations. -

Her concerns seemed less arcane, her presentation more appealingly worked out; as Guy Scarpetta put it in he Nouvel Observateur (May 19, 1980), she now intro- duced into "theoretical rigor an effective measure of seduction." Actually, no sudden change has taken place: the features that are noticeable in Powers of Horror were already in evidence in several earlier essays, some of which have been translated in Desire in Language (Columbia University Press, 1980). -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Ahmad Tohari’s novel, Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, portrays the struggle of the underclass of Dukuh Paruk in facing the political turmoil, particularly around the 1960s. The present study examines political subjectivity through the truth procedure in the novel. The research problems are answered by using a qualitative research method and post-Marxism as the critical approach. By applying a theory proposed by Alain Badiou, this study questions the role of Javanese women, represented by Srintil as the main character of the novel, in adapting to the rapid changes of the world. In Badiou’s philosophy, truth is not a static state but appears as a procedure—in which it can be seen for a passing moment as an event. The results of the analysis show that the Dukuh Paruk community experiences an event of political propaganda which, eventually, leads to independence of the working class. Due to the incorporation, Srintil as a ronggeng (a local traditional dancer) who plays an essential role in the center of the community is subjectivated to become a reactive subject, one who denies the event of truth.
