www.lufkintexas.org 15 Rick Schiller to Speak at First Friday Luncheon – April 3rd Rick Schiller will be the featured speaker at The Chamber’s First Friday lunch on Friday, April 3, 2009 at noon, Crown Colony Country Club. Rick will speak to the subject: “Why our Children need the Performing Art…and, what about the Grown-Ups?” Rick will also announce the Arts Alliance’s new 2009-10 Season. Rick Schiller is starting his fifth year as Executive Director of the Angelina Arts Alliance. In this position, he programs three live performing arts series for East Texas audiences at the Temple Theatre on the campus. They are: a yearly Premier Series of professional music, dance, and theatre events, a Schooltime Series for area students and their teachers, and a Family Matinee Series, especially designed for families to enjoy together. This current season, Rick -- and his Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers – will have presented 17 diverse performances -- and served over 13,000 East Texans and their families. In addition, Rick oversees the Arts Alliance’s popular Camp CenterStage program, now planning its seventh summer of theatre training for students entering Grades 5-10. This summer, the camp expands to include morning sessions for children entering Grades 1-4. All Temple Theatre performances – and Camp CenterStage – are produced in partnership with Angelina College. Rick Schiller received his undergraduate degree in theatre from the University of Michigan and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of . His career has embraced the two worlds of theatre and advertising. He has staged more than 85 live productions as artistic/manag- ing director of theatres in Austin, Chattanooga, Louisville, Midland (TX), and Lynchburg (VA). For nineteen years, he served as head of broadcast production for several national advertising agencies in the U.S. and Canada, where he produced/directed more than 600 tv commercials. He moved to Lufkin – from Austin – in January, 2005. In early 1996, Angelina College announced plans to build a multi-million dollar fine arts center with a state-of-the-art theatre. The concept for the Angelina Arts Alliance was born later that year; however the organization did not begin to take shape until 1999, when a core group of individuals began planning in earnest. A Board of Directors was appointed in 2000. Its first season began in September, 2001 with a concert/performance by Marvin Hamlisch. The mission of the Arts Alliance has always been to enrich the lives of the families in East Texas through the performing arts. By the end of its 2008-09 season, the Arts Alliance will have presented 55 major events, with artists traveling to Lufkin from throughout the U.S., as well as China, Russia, Canada, Hungary, and Ireland. The Arts Alliance is supported by its season subscribers and ticket-buyers, corporate/ usiness/ individual sponsors, foundations, personal donations, and advertisers. All realize the value the Arts Alliance brings to the quality of life in the community. The organization continually looks for ways to extend its offerings and expand its reach, so that it can represent – and offer services to – all of East Texas.
