BIL KEANE June 28, 1999 Joan Horne and myself, Ann Townsend, interviewers for the Town of Paradise Valley Historical Committee are privileged to interview Bil Keane. Mr. Keane has been a long time resident of the Town of Paradise Valley, but is best known and loved for his cartoon, The Family Circus. Thank you, Mr. Keane, for allowing us to come and visit with you today. May we have your permission to quote you in part or all of our conversation today? Bil Keane: Absolutely, anything you want to quote from it, if it's worthwhile quoting of course, I'm happy to do it. Ann Townsend: Thank you very much. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you to hot Arizona? Bil Keane: Well, it was a TWA plane. I worked on the Philadelphia Bulletin for 15 years after I got out of the army in 1945. It was just before then end of 1958 that I had been bothered each year with allergies. I would sneeze in the summertime and mainly in the spring. Then it got in to be in the fall, then spring, summer and fall. The doctor would always prescribe at that time something that would alleviate it. At the Bulletin I was doing a regular comic and I was editor of their Fun Book. I had a nine to five job there and we lived in Roslyn which was outside Philadelphia and it was one hour and a half commute on the train and subway. I was selling a feature to the newspapers called Channel Chuckles, which was the little cartoon about television which I enjoyed doing.

  • See You in the Funny Papers: Cartoons and Social Networks
CONNECTIONS 23(1): 32-42 © 2000 INSNA See you in the Funny Papers: Cartoons and Social Networks Linton C. Freeman University of California, Irvine From time to time a branch of science captures the imagination of the public; it gets "hot." When that happens, references to the "hot" item appear in newspapers, in novels, in movies -- even in cartoons. Forty odd years ago, for example, Ray Birdwhistell (1952) first introduced kinesics, the field concerned with the importance of non-verbal gestures in human communication. Very soon, Al Capp introduced a new character in his comic strip, Li'l Abner. Capp began a series of based on the activities of a "Professor Fleasong," a specialist in the study of "toe gestures." The field of social network analysis seems to be in that kind of center-stage position today. The fact that social networks is "hot" is indicated by its increasingly frequent appearance in the popular media, particularly in the comics. And, interestingly enough, many of those treatments are quite sophisti-cated. They refer, not just to the network idea, but they often reflect some of the more subtle and sophisticated ideas from our field -- and they do it with wit. In the present note, I will review some of the cartoons published in the last few years that focus on social net-works. One aim is to entertain. But, at the same time, I will show cartoons that reveal the core ideas behind a wide range of important structural research. Cartoons of this sort might be used to provide the uninitiated with a painless introduction to some key network concepts and research findings.

  • {PDF EPUB} Dennis the Menace Television Special by Hank Ketcham the Tragic True Story of Dennis the Menace
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Dennis The Menace Television Special by Hank Ketcham The Tragic True Story Of Dennis The Menace. Dennis the Menace has been terrorizing his neighborhood for decades. The character's creator, Hank Ketcham, wanted to make his readers feel better about their kids' behavior. His own child, the titular Dennis, was apparently a very rowdy boy. But as much as the cartoon Dennis endured and flourished, including a series of popular movies and TV shows, the real Dennis didn't have as much luck. Ketcham got the idea in 1951 after his wife Alice told him that their son, Dennis, then four years old, had destroyed his room by throwing around fecal matter from his pants. Alice was so mad she called her son a menace, wrote Mental Floss. Ketcham found the thought of his son as being harmful good material, and within five months, the strip was being published by 16 newspapers. Like other popular comic strips at the time, Dennis the Menace would go on to be translated into several languages. Ketcham's comic character really was a menace. In the early strips, Dennis would incite fights, tie swan heads together, and laugh at others' misfortunes. Ketcham toned down this trait in later comics, but the idea that Dennis was a bit of a brat stuck around. In an interesting twist of fate, another Dennis the Menace comic strip came out around the same time as Ketcham's, said the BBC, featuring a child who was just a little older and less of a troublemaker.
