Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis explores the transmission of information about classical inscriptions and their use in historical scholarship between 1530 and 1603. It aims to demonstrate that antiquarians' approach to one form of material non-narrative evidence for the ancient world reveals a developed sense of history, and that this approach can be seen as part of a more general interest in expanding the subject matter of history and the range of sources with which it was examined. It examines the milieu of the men who studied inscriptions, arguing that the training and intellectual networks of these men, as well as the need to secure patronage and the constraints of printing, were determining factors in the scholarship they undertook. It then considers the first collections of inscriptions that aimed at a comprehensive survey, and the systems of classification within these collections, to show that these allowed scholars to produce lists and series of features in the ancient world; the conventions used to record inscriptions and what scholars meant by an accurate transcription; and how these conclusions can influence our attitude to men who reconstructed or forged classical material in this period.

    Introduction The Image—Or from Whom (Not?) to Buy a Second-Hand Car 0.1 The Portraits of Jacopo and Ottavio Strada In the summer of 2008 the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam mounted a small exhibit showing Tintoretto’s portrait of Ottavio Strada da Rosberg, antiquary to the Emperor Rudolf ii, from its own collection [Fig. 0.2], next to Titian’s fa- mous portrait of Jacopo Strada, Ottavio’s father and predecessor as antiquary to the Emperors Ferdinand i, Maximilian ii and Rudolf ii, which had been sent on loan by the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna for the occasion [Fig. 0.1]. An occasion of some moment because it was the first time for at least three hundred and fifty years that these two portraits, which had been painted simultaneously in Venice in 1567–1568, could be seen side by side.     Claudio Tolomei’s Letter of 1542 Describing The Publishing Program of the Roman Accademia de lo Studio de l’Architettura (c. 1535–1555) 5. Juni 2019 1 Introduction In 1547 the Sienese humanist, philologist, politician, and—later—bishop Claudio Tolomei published a letter he had written to count Agostino de’Landi in 1542.[Tolomei 1547, 81r-85r] It contains a vast program of twenty-four books to be published by a network of learned men in Rome dealing with ancient Roman architecture, its theory, its contexts and meanings.1 Tolomei’s collection of letters including this one has been published more than 10 times in the 16th century alone. It has also bee reprinted several times by modern research since the 1970s. And it has been referenced much more often in the scholarly literature. So, it can be said, that this letter is very well known at least among scholars of Italian Renaissance antiquarianism, but also of Renaissance architecture. Therefore, it is very astonishing that the letter has almost never been read carefully, and that Tolomei’s words never have been taken for being worth to study them carefully. This seems to be the main reason why the project described in the letter has always been regarded as a phantasy and far too ambitious to have led to any results worth mentioning. For instance, Tolomei claims that the entire program could be finished in less than three years. However, modern research has accepted only one book and two groups of archaeological drawings after tombstones and sarcophagi as resulting from the work of Tolomei’s network of scholars and practitioners.

I).1 Mit diesem Auf­ tragswerk kam eine Gattung in Tizians CEuvre an ihr Ende, zu deren Genese im 16. Jahrhundert der Maler substantiell, ja bahnbrechend beigetragen hatte. Die Verleben­ digung der Person und Autonomisierung der künstlerischen Mittel bei gleichzeitiger Wahrung der Ähnlichkeit und Präsenz des Dargestellten hat Tizian gerade in seinen späten Portraits musterhaft formuliert; sie sollten künstlerisches Vorbild und Objekte kunsthistorischen Interesses für Jahrhunderte bleiben. Das Strada-Portrait in Wien hat seit langem zu spekulativen Deutungen auf­ gefordert, denn es ist mit der Darstellung einer identifizierbaren Person einerseits den engen Konventionen der Gattung verpflichtet, andererseits überbietet es das Gebot der auf Ähnlichkeit basierenden Mimesis durch eine historienhafte Insze­ nierung mit hinzugefügten Handlungs­ elementen, welche nicht nur die Ähnlich­ keit, sondern, mehr noch, ein die Ganzheit der Person umfassendes Bild, ein Image, erzeugen. Im Typus des Kniestücks zeigt sich der in prächtige Kleidung gehüllte Herr in einem Innenraum, der mit Requi­ siten der Gelehrsamkeit wie einer Statuet­ te, einem männlichen Torso, Münzen und bedeutungsvoll über dem Kopf des Darge­ stellten abgelegten Büchern angefüllt ist.     de Vere Society newsletter July 2015 ‘The Scene Vienna’: some Hapsburg elements in Measure for Measure by Jan Cole This essay represents some initial research in response to Christopher Dams’ challenge to extend the approach taken by Richard Paul Roe in The Shakespeare Guide to Italy (2011) and to look at the plays in other European settings with respect to locations and what they might reveal of the author’s knowledge. Christopher noted that Measure for Measure appears to exist in a Viennese vacuum, peopled by characters with Latin/Greek or English names. Could it be that Vienna is either a typographical error or an editorial gloss for some other city, perhaps Venice? The plot is driven by a draconian law against adultery, which to my mind has a Venetian ring. I could discern no local references to Vienna, or indeed to anywhere else at all. (DVS newsletter, 20.3, Spring 2013 This essay will try to ascertain, from the text and contemporary history, whether a Viennese location was originally intended. The only extant text of the play is that in the First Folio (1623). There appears to be at least one clear local reference to Vienna in the play, which is the name of the convent ‘Isabella’ is about to enter and which belongs to the order of Saint Clare. A church marked ‘St Clare’ certainly appears on Braun and Hogenberg’s view of Vienna published in 1572, but more importantly the order of St Clare had existed in Vienna since the 13th century. A new convent and church, close to the ducal palace, was built by Elizabeth of Austria, the widow of the French king Charles IX, between 1581 and 1583 on the site of the present Palais Pallavicini (built 1782- 84) at Josephsplatz 5, Vienna.
