ny promotion person who calls himself a doctor and sports a lab coat is worth some JazzWeek scrutiny. ABut as many of us probably already knew, Dr. Jazz comes by that name honestly, as the rest of you will soon find out. While the Dr. has plied his trade for 25 years, hopefully everyone will learn something new about this jazz radio fixture. We caught up with the Dr. at his lab in Oak Park, Michigan. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: How long you been doing this gig? Dr. Jazz: Wow, it’ll be 26 years in 2006! How did you get into it? I enjoyed listening to music, especially jazz, while study- ing. When I arrived at the University of Vermont in Burlington to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology, I re- alized that the campus radio station, WRUV, had very little jazz in their schedule. So one day, I visited the sta- tion to complain. To my amazement, they appointed me jazz director. They also gave me a jazz show Sundays 2- 6 p.m. Looking for a moniker for my show, some of the other DJ’s suggested that I call myself Dr. Jazz. Just as I was finishing up my degree in 1980, the great folk label Philo Records decided to put out their first jazz album, a group called Kilimanjaro. Being the main jazz person in Burlington, they asked if I would like to try my hand at promoting the group nationally. Well, the rest, as they say, is history. The album was added to over 250 sta- tions around the country including a multitude of week- end specialty jazz shows on commercial radio. Following that, Philo released the first Elements (Danny Gottlieb & Mark Egan) album, which also took off. It was a long continued ... jazzweek.com • Nov. 21, 2005 JazzWeek 10 Industry Q&A: Dr. Jazz (continued)

conversation with Art Blakey that finally convinced me to leave genetics and dedicate my life to promoting jazz. Art Blakey. Holy crap. Where and how did this long conversation take place? My best friend lived in Boston at the time, and I would go into the city at least once a month to hit clubs like Paul’s Mall, Lulu White’s, Jazz Workshop, The 1369 Club and others. I also popped up to Montreal often to catch the jazz scene at a wonderful club called DuDu’s Rising Sun. I saw Art many times at these clubs and at festivals. We ended up becoming good friends. After the success of the Elements project, I mentioned to him that I was torn between genetic research and jazz. Following a wonderful weekend in NYC with him, I realized that there was only one choice: JAZZ! Ever think of getting out? Not really. I love the music and more so, the musicians. I have always felt honored to have the privilege of be- ing associated with some of the great- est musicians in the world. I’m sure that most of us in the jazz community feel the same way. It sure isn’t for the money! Amen to that. What do you look for in an artist that makes you want to work with them? I’m not sure if the question concerns the musician, per say, as much as it does the actual product. In addition to a quality performance and recording, the CD has to offer something more Where’s Dr. Jazz? Dr. Jazz is in the midst of a cadre of photographers at the 2005 San Sebastian Jazz Festival. than just a carbon copy of everything else already in the market. A prime example is the current Nicola Stilo/Toninho Horta Duets on Adventure Music. It also has to be “Radio Friendly.” There have been many projects that I passed on due to length of cuts or too “out.” I need to justify to myself first that the CD is worth the cost of our fee. I would rather not take the money than to have the client dissatisfied with the results. How many artists do you work at a time? Do you have strategy for working it? This is definitely the wrong time of the year to ask this question! Typically, I try to limit the number of projects to around 6 or 7 at any one time. Although this may impact me negatively on the financial end, it does allow me to give my full attention to each CD. continued ... jazzweek.com • Nov. 21, 2005 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Dr. Jazz (continued)

Is there a project or client that you’ve been particularly proud of repping? One of the highlights in my career was my relationship with Tito Puente. What an absolute joy to be associated with not only one of the greatest musi- cians ever, but also such a wonderful person. I miss him greatly. You seem to have a high-end camera surgically attached, at least at IAJE and JazzWeek. What’s the story with photography? It seems much more se- rious than just a hobby. I’ve been into photography ever since high school. My first camera was a Mi- nolta SRT-101. I think I first got into it because it was a great way to pick up girls! Once I entered into the jazz business and realized how lucky I was to be able to hang backstage, I decided that I would vicariously share this experi- ence with the rest of the jazz commu- nity through my pictures. I exclusive- ly use Canon equipment with the 20D as my main camera. I’m looking to pick up the 5D by IAJE 2006. I have had several of my pictures published, with the latest one, Kenny Barron at this year’s San Sebastian Jazz Festival, appearing in the December issue of Downbeat. If anyone has a travel bug it’s you. But is it relaxing or are you still working when to jazz festivals abroad? Travel definitely has become less re- laxing as I get older! In regards to my world travels, I have always believed that it is critically important for an American to understand how the rest of the world functions. We are a great nation, but not the only nation in the world. Plus, I really love to experience how other countries appreciate and support our music. What’s something you’re into that people will be hearing about soon? Pro- fessional or otherwise. If I win this week’s Mega Millions Lottery ($310 million), expect to see my jazz club opening soon! his issue marks the first anniversary of JazzWeek as a weekly PDF-based publication, and marks one year of jazz and smooth jazz charts powered by TMediaguide. Our first edition had the first of many interviews by our music editor, Tad Hendrickson, as he chatted with Wynton Marsalis about the new digs for Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Building on Columbus Circle in New York. And longtime friends and contributing editors Keith and Kent Zimmer- man were there in the first issue with an interview with . In December, Tad brought us an interview with Michelle Mercer, author of Footprints, The Life and Music of Wayne Shorter, allowing us to feature a previous- ly unpublished photo of the jazz legend. Our Dec. 31, 2004 issue was our first year-end issue, and included the top- ten picks of our readers, and noted the No. 1 jazz radio album of the year, Diana Krall’s The Girl in the Other Room. The Jan. 12, 2005 issue marked the move from Fridays to Wednesdays for JazzWeek, to better align our publishing with Mediaguide chart data. That is- sue also included a wrap-up of IAJE 2005 in Long Beach. In March, we published a special issue celebrating Dave Love and the 15th anniversary of the label he founded, Heads Up International. In our June 22 issue, we looked back at the Jazz Journalist Awards, and re- viewed the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Later issues highlighted the Montreal, Newport, Syracuse, San Sebastian, Detroit, Umbria and Monterey festivals, among others. In our June 29 issue, we recapped our fourth JazzWeek Summit, noting the JazzWeek awards, which included album and artist of the year awards for David “Fathead” Newman, a vocalist of the year nod for Tierney Sutton, and the Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award for Joe Fields. Summer also brought the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and in our Sept. 21 special issue, Tad brought us interviews with Terence Blanchard, Wendy Ox- enhorn of the Jazz Foundation of America, WWOZ’s Dwayne Breashears, and Basin Street Records’ Mark Samuels. We also published more than 200 CD reviews and more than 300 news ar- ticles during the year. This issue marks another milestone, asJazzWeek now becomes available via a complimentary subscription to those in fields related to jazz. The increased cir- culation will help us be a more effective trade and will help us support the costs of publishing with more advertising. Many contributors including Dr. Jazz, Tom Mallison, Barry Solof, Chuy Va- rela, and Kate Kaiser also helped make this possible. Tom’s wisdom and counsel have been especially important. Tad Hendrickson’s skill as a writer, his experience, and his patience, have been invaluable. The folks at Mediaguide have made this transition possible. Our thanks go to Erik Maier and Paul Wright, who contacted us about their far-reaching plans back in 2003, and also Joe Wallace and Frank Johnson. Keith and Kent Zimmerman were the first people who called us when Gavin folded its jazz and smooth jazz charts in 2001; without their encouragment, this would not have come to fruition. Last but not least, we also salute the valiant efforts of our original publisher, Tony Gasparre, and the work he did to launch JazzWeek from the beginning through our transition to PDF. And, of course, we thank all of those of you who have read JazzWeek each week, who have attended the Summits, and who have supported us from the start.
