    ‘Gilligan’s Island?’: The Club Cricket Conference, Amateurism and the Evening Standard in Post-War Britain. Introduction Amateurism in sport and political and civil society was a firmly established ideology, or ‘ethos’, which informed British culture and identity prior to the outbreak of World War Two, although this concept was frequently challenged prior to 1939 – especially in sport. The Labour Party’s landslide electoral victory of that year (and the 1942 Beveridge Report before it) contributed towards ‘amateurism’, in all aspects of British society, being questioned, and, if necessary, replaced by a new breed of professionalism. Innovations such as the National Health Service, the Welfare State and a policy of nationalization, attempted to alter the cultural, economic and political foundations of English society. However, as Ross Mc Kibbin has argued, these innovations did not essentially affect the structure of English society, especially with regard to those social groups who controlled a variety of political, civil and cultural organizations. ‘Cricket – like a number of sports [at a national level] – was administered, and its ethos established, by self-electing, all-male associations recruited overwhelmingly from the upper and upper middle classes’. 1 Norman Baker notes how the committees of organizations, such as the MCC, managed to maintain their pre-war influence and the inherent ethos of amateurism that informed it.2 It was clear at the national level, where traditionalist administrators held the majority of key positions, that if change was to happen at all, it was going to be a drawn out process influenced by exterior social changes rather than pro-active decision making from within.

    Charle s Kelleway (188 6 - 1944) Australia n Cricketer (1910/11 - 1928/29) NS W Cricketer (1907/0 8 - 1928/29) • Born in Lismore on 25 April 1886. • Right-hand bat and right-arm fast-medium bowler. • North Coastal Cricket Zone’s first Australian capped player. He played 26 test matches, and 132 first class matches. • He was the original captain of the AIF team that played matches in England after the end of World War I. • In 26 tests he scored 1422 runs at 37.42 with three centuries and six half-centuries, and he took 52 wickets at 32.36 with a best of 5-33. • He was the first of just four Australians to score a century (114) and take five wickets in an innings (5/33) in the same test. He did this against South Africa in the Triangular Test series in England in 1912. Only Jack Gregory, Keith Miller and Richie Benaud have duplicated his feat for Australia. • He is the only player to play test cricket with both Victor Trumper and Don Bradman. • In 132 first-class matches he scored 6389 runs at 35.10 with 15 centuries and 28 half-centuries. With the ball, he took 339 wickets at 26.33 with 10 five wicket performances. Amazingly, he bowled almost half (164) of these. He bowled more than half (111) of his victims for New South Wales. • In 57 first-class matches for New South Wales he scored 3031 runs at 37.88 with 10 centuries and 11 half-centuries. He took 215 wickets at 23.90 with seven five-wicket performances, three of these being seven wicket hauls, with a best of 7-39.

    Belated Happy Birthday To Clive Hubert Lloyd By Dmitri Allicock Born August 31, 1944, Queenstown, Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana now Guyana, was a former Guyana and West Indies cricketer. In 1971 he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year. He captained the West Indies between 1974 and 1985 and oversaw their rise to become the dominant Test-playing nation, a position that was only relinquished in the latter half of the 1990s. He is one of the most successful Test captains of all time with a record of 74 test captaincy and 36 wins. During his captaincy the side had a run of 27 matches without defeat, which included 11 wins in succession Viv Richards acted as captain for one of the 27 matches, against Australia at Port of Spain in 1983–84). He was the first West Indian player to earn 100 international caps. Lloyd captained the West Indies in three World Cups, winning the 1975 with Lloyd scoring a century in the finals while losing the 1983 final to India. Lloyd was a tall, powerful middle-order batsman and occasional medium-pace bowler. In his youth he was also a strong cover point fielder. He wore his famous thick trademark glasses as a result of being poked in the eye with a ruler which occurred at 12 as he attempted to break up a fight at school. At 6'5" with stooped shoulders, a large well manicured moustache Clive Lloyd was the crucial ingredient in the rise of West Indian cricket. A cousin of Lance Gibbs, he was a hard hitting batsman and one of the most successful captains in history.

    Major D. G. M. MURPHY AM [1914 – 2005] Major Murphy was President of the Club 1954-55 Douglas Gordon Murtagh Murphy was born in Elsternwick, Victoria, on 17 August 1914 – son of Murtagh Robert Murphy and Kathleen Mary (née Bell). He had two siblings, Peter, and Margaret. He was educated at Tocumwal Public School, Ivanhoe Grammar School, and at Hay War Memorial High School (NSW). He was awarded a Scholarship to Sydney Teachers College, Sydney in 1930, and completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 1938. File: HIG/Biographies/MURPHY Page 1 In March 1941 Douglas became engaged to Agnes Millicent "Nancy"(née McWhirter) [2014 - 2017] of Brisbane, and they were married on 5 June 1941 at Larrakeyah Barracks, Darwin - where he had been serving as Adjutant of the Darwin Mobile Force. They had four children: • Diana Margaret (b.1944) who became a teacher. • Derek James Murtagh (b.1946) who became a stockbroker, barrister and businessman in both Hong Kong and Australia. • Susan Mary (b.1948) • Douglas Robert Murtagh (b.1951) who became a barrister and later Queens’s Counsel in Brisbane Douglas joined the Army and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1939. He initially served in the Infantry including Darwin Mobile Force; and later transferred to Signals (including in 3 Division in Melbourne in 1942) before appointment to staff positions.
