It’s Better to Know! Learn the Signs. Act Early. Learning About Developmental Milestones All of us want our children to be happy and healthy. We want what is best for them. This story is about my family as we learn that “It’s Better To Know” about developmental milestones. Developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age. Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, and act. Milestones offer important clues about a child’s development. The developmental milestones you will learn about in this fotonovela will give you a general idea of what to expect as your child grows. Not reaching these milestones, or reaching them much later than other children, could be a sign of a developmental delay. Trust your instincts. If you have concerns about your child’s development, the best thing to do is talk with your doctor. It’s Better To Know! was produced by the Organization for Autism Research with funding provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. www.cdc.gov/actearly iii He’s fine. Book Reviews Hā‘ena: Through the Eyes of the Ancestors. By Carlos Andrade. Honolulu: University of Hawai‘i Press, 2008. xxi + 158 pp. Maps. Bibliography. Illustrated. Photographs. Index. $30.00 cloth Listening to tales told by the earth and elders of Hā‘ena, Kaua‘i, Hawaiian studies professor and geographer Carlos Andrade maps out a storied land- scape of tradition, change, and persistence. Hā‘ena: Through the Eyes of the Ancestors issues an urgent call to Kānaka ‘Ōiwi Maoli [indigenous Hawaiians] and all peoples of Hawai‘i to remember the mo‘olelo [histories, stories, nar- ratives] of the places that we are now a part of. This is especially important as pressures from tourism, in-migration, and escalating real estate prices threaten to reshape the face of the Hawaiian Islands. As Andrade tells us, “[t]he loss of names and their accompanying stories sever Native peoples from their ancestry, history, and identity, and, in this era of globalization, their legitimate claims to their continuing existence as a unique and distinct people” (p. 4). But if we hold on to these mo‘olelo, we may just be able to ‘ō‘ili pulelo ke ahi o Makana (p. ix)—rise in triumph like the firebrands of Makana. Andrade does precisely this as he combines the tools of geography, history, ethnography, and Hawaiian studies in a text that shows indigenous research at its very best: intelligent, accessible, responsible, and relevant. This book will become essential reading for community members, students, and scholars looking at—and with—Native land and peoples. “Hā‘ena, the intense breath of the sun, reverberates through the archi- pelago, beginning first at the easternmost tip at Hā‘ena, Puna, and on to .

FALL 2020 ACADEMIC REGALIA Though our ceremonies look different this year, regalia traditions are beloved, timeless and span decades — and pandemics. Our graduates have earned the right to don regalia and adornments for the rest of their lives that reflect the dedication they have shown to their field and the love they have for their alma mater. The custom of recognizing the accomplishments of scholars through distinctive dress, color and ceremony began in the Middle Ages and has been adopted by various academic institutions throughout the world. American academic regalia developed from the English traditions that originated at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford and has been in continuous use in this country since Colonial times. Institutions of higher learning in the United States have adopted a system for identifying different academic degrees by use of specific gowns, hoods and colors. The baccalaureate (bachelor’s) gown is identified by long pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has a very long sleeve, closed at the bottom, and the wearer’s arm is placed through an opening in the front of the sleeve. Master’s gowns also are distinguished by green panels down the front of the gown. Doctoral gowns are distinguished by velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown. Three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve also may mark the doctorate. The colorful hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates represent the specific degree earned and the degree-granting institution. Hoods for UNT are distinguished by a kelly-green-and-white chevron lining.

  • Jesus, the Righteous Branch of Jesse — Matthew 3:1-12 Page 1 Advent 2A Pastor Douglas Punke in the Name of C Jesus. in This Ad
Jesus, the Righteous Branch of Jesse — Matthew 3:1-12 Page 1 Advent 2a Pastor Douglas Punke In the name of c Jesus. In this Advent season, a watchword is the word “prepare.” Matthew tells us this is why John the Baptist is significant. John makes his appearance in the Judean wilderness as the voice foretold by Isaiah: the “voice of one crying in the wilderness,” preparing “the way of the Lord.” In our busy lives outside of church, in this Advent season, I’m sure there is a lot of preparing taking place. The gifts under the Christmas tree don’t just miraculously appear; being a bit circumspect here…there is no “jolly old elf” delivering them from the North Pole. The house doesn’t get decorated on its own. Christmas goodies don’t make themselves. And magic won’t make your festive Christmas dinner. All these require preparation. You may be hosting a Christmas gathering at your home; you may be going to have holiday guests to your home. These require preparation, perhaps even a good old-fashioned house cleaning. John came on the scene knowing that he was the one sent to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. His father Zechariah sang of it at John’s birth, and no doubt told John many times: “you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins …” (Luke 1:76-77). That is, John came on the scene to give Israel a figurative house cleaning.

  • The Jesse Tree Who Was Jesse?
THE JESSE TREE WHO WAS JESSE? The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of the Messiah. Isaiah's words helped people L- know that the One who was promised to them by God would be born into the family of Jesse. " A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse and from his roots a bud shall blossom." Isaiah II: I-10 Jesse of Bethlehem had seven sons. Jesse's youngest son, David, watched over the sheep for him. One day the prophet Samuel came to Jesse's house and met David. Samuel anointed David. Many years later, David became King. It was from Jesse that the family tree branched out to David and his descendants. Jesse and David were ancestors of Jesus. At the time of Jesus' birth all those who belonged to the family of David had to return to the town of Bethlehem because a census was being taken. Since Joseph and Mary were of the House of David, they had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register. WHAT IS THE JESSE TREE? The Jesse Tree is a special tree used during the season of Advent. The Jesse Tree represents the family tree of Jesus. It serves as a reminder of the human family of Jesus. The uniqueness of the Jesse Tree comes from the ornaments that are used to decorate it. They are symbols that depict the ancestors of Jesus or a prophecy fulfilled at His coming. Traditionally, the Jesse Tree ornaments also included representations of Adam, F.ve and Creation. These symbolize the promise.. The Jesse Tree Book SUGGESTIONS FOR JESSE TREE ORNAMENTS Directions: The list of names below are Sarah: Genesis 15 and 21 suggestions that can be used for Jesse Tree Ornaments.
