July 2019 GOODBYE and GOOD LUCK

On Sunday 23rd June Rev. Trudy Hobson celebrated her final service at St Mary’s Church before she leaves to take the role of Priest-in-Charge of the Upper Wylye Valley Team, in the Diocese of Salisbury. The Church was full for the service, which was for the group of 5 parishes, and included a performance from the school choir.

Rev. Trudy has served as Curate to the parishes of , Wrawby, Cadney, Bonby and Worlaby for the last three years. During that time we have enjoyed a concert from members of the RAF Band, with whom she played trumpet prior to training for the clergy.

As well as being involved in services at St Mary’s and administering to the pastoral needs of parishioners Rev. Trudy has been heavily involved in the life of Wrawby St Mary’s School, leading worship, educating the children and providing valuable input as a school governor. She will be sadly missed but we wish her well in the future.

We send Trudy every good wish as she takes charge of the team, which covers 10 Churches. She will be licensed at St Peter and St Paul in Heytesbury at 7 pm on Monday 29th July 2012,where the Bishop of Salisbury will officiate. Please keep Trudy in your thoughts and prayers.

The RSPCA advise never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, dial 999.

Many people still believe that it's ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they're parked in the shade, but the truth is, it's still a very dangerous situation for the dog.

A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn't feel that warm. When it's 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour.

6 Thought for the Month

“Barrow –on – Humber….where on earth is that?” These were my words when I received the news that Barrow on Humber was to be my first appointment as a probationary minister in 1970. I am Edward Barrie Leah…known to friends, family and parishioners alike as Barrie. A true Lancastrian, born and bred in Accrington [of Accrington Stanley fame for football enthusiasts] and only child of an army Regimental Sergeant Major, and a mother who worked in the noisy mills….. perhaps that’s why in my hay day I had such a loud voice! As a teenager I was very involved in our local church Antley Methodist, a member of the amateur dramatics group and later becoming Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader and Local Preacher. After studying “A” levels I was offered a place at the School of Economics, but after the sudden death of my father I gave up this position and began work in the local authority Borough Engineer and Surveyors department. During this time I offered myself as a candidate for the Methodist Ministry and was accepted for training in 1966. I spent 4 happy years training at Hartley Victoria College linked to Manchester University. During my summer holiday periods I worked as an excursion leader in Christian Endeavour holiday homes, and it was in 1969 at Lorne House on the Isle of Man where I met my wife Iris, marrying her just before my appointment in Barrow in 1970. I believe at that time we had 12 chapels to look after between the superintendent minister and myself, and I learned the ropes as quickly as possible. My ordination in 1972 saw me accepting extended invitations to remain in the circuit for 17 years when I then became superintendent minister. Sadly I had to retire from this position due to ill health, but over the years have tried to assist whenever help was requested.

Latterly, with a shortage of ministers in the circuit, our present Superintendent minister Rev. Nichola Jones [whose father incidentally was the minister who married us way back in 1970….what a small world!], asked me to take over pastoral care of Methodists at Wrawby…. and what a joy that has been. We were welcomed with warmth and friendship, and although the numbers may be few, the commitment, hard work and enthusiasm are astounding. If you are reading this as a local resident, you will have no doubt been aware of the community events that have been organised over the months, from monthly coffee mornings, afternoon teas, songs of praise and other events, all raising valuable funds for maintaining the work of the Church in Wrawby, and hopefully offering a service to the community. The work of the Church nationwide is not so different from the work that goes on locally, as we care for those in our communities as well as do our best to support the need of those in other countries, where war, famine and disease are often daily challenges. Supporting charities such as Christian Aid helps to send the message to struggling communities that we care and are mindful of their plight. Christianity is not about remaining comfortable in our “safe” environments, but demands that we reach out to others who are less fortunate, to offer the hand of friendship, compassion and support, so that we may fulfil the charge given by Jesus in the gospel of Matthew chapter 25 v 40.

“Truly I say to you as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

I look forward to the future, working alongside the community at Wrawby. I know that life will not be dull! Rev. E. Barrie Leah
