During the winter season, the population of 3,000 almost doubles as seasonal vacationers flock to the many RV parks from the western states and Canada. It’s no wonder, with so many warm, sunny days that the area in and around Wellton has become such a popular retirement destination. Once a water stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoaches and then the Southern Pacific Railroad, this small town’s history began with its founding in 1878. As cars came into use, “Well Town”, named for the water wells to supply the railroad, became Wellton which is now primarily an agricultural community.
