The Summary of the Law

Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40

Sermon

Nicene Creed (in unison)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People (please kneel)

The Deacon says: Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, “Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.”

Please offer your prayers this morning, either out loud or silently.

The Deacon concludes with the following prayer: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Confession (in unison)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Absolution

The Celebrant says: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Comfortable Words

The Celebrant may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying: Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2

Peace Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with your spirit.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Offertory

Presentation Hymn Lasst uns erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Celebrant: All things come from you, O Lord. People: And of your own have we given you.

Sursum Corda (all stand)

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through your most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his most glorious resurrection appeared to his Apostles, and in their sight ascended into heaven to prepare a place for us; that where he is, there we might also ascend, and reign with him in glory.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

Sanctus et Benedictus Hymnal S128

The Prayer of Consecration

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Fraction

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Prayer of Humble Access (in unison)

We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Fraction Anthem Hymnal S171

In the Lord I’ll Be Ever Thankful Taize

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Behold the Lamb Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Stuart Townend CCLI: 5003372

Psalm 62 Stuart Townend, Aaron Keyes CCLI: 5040902

My soul finds rest in God alone My rock and my salvation A fortress strong against my foes And I will not be shaken Though lips may bless and hearts may curse And lies like arrows pierce me I'll fix my heart on righteousness I'll look to Him who hears me

O praise Him hallelujah My Delight and my Reward Everlasting never failing My Redeemer my God

Find rest my soul in God alone Amid the world's temptations When evil seeks to take a hold I'll cling to my salvation Though riches come and riches go Don't set your heart upon them The fields of hope in which I sow Are harvested in heaven

I'll set my gaze on God alone And trust in Him completely With ev'ry day pour out my soul And He will prove His mercy Though life is but a fleeting breath A sigh too deep to measure My King has crushed the curse of death And I am His forever

In Christ Alone Getty & Townend; CCLI: 3350395

In Christ alone, my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; this cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless Babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save, ‘Til on the cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For ev’ry sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; then, bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me; for I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious .

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the pow’r of Christ in me; from a life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; ‘Til He returns or calls me home, here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!

Post Communion Prayer (in unison)

Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ: and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer for our Search Team (in unison)

Good and gracious God, thank you for blessing our church. As we prepare for our future, we are confident of your goodness and care, and we humbly ask you to open our hearts and minds so that we may listen well for your guidance. Help us to discern Your will, and to be guided to select the person you already have in mind to be our new Rector. May we love each other and You more deeply as we make this journey together. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Adult Education Due to VBS setup in the Parish Hall, we will have coffee and fellowship time on the lawn after the service today. Next week we will begin a new Adult Education series “Creeds and Confessions of the Church.” One significant, but often overlooked, part of Anglican worship is the regular confession of creeds. These creeds have stood the test of time as basic foundations for understanding what it means to follow Jesus Christ as a member of His church, but we often miss the depth and power of these short statements of belief. Join us in the Parish Hall for an eight week series in which we will go deeper into the meaning of these historic confessions. The class will be taught by Father Matt following the 9:00 a.m. service.

Request for Someone to Record Adult Education Series A number of parishioners have requested that we record this summer's adult education series and post it to the CCA website. We would love to do this if someone was able to ensure the classes are recorded and then forwarded to the Parish Office to be uploaded. Please contact the office if you would be able to do this.

Rector Search Update The Rector Search Committee is happy to say that we have concluded candidate interviews! At the close of our online rector application, we had received 14 complete applications, 3 incomplete applications, and 3 inquiries. We walked with 10 candidates through the interview process, which included the potential for four interviews. Including initial one hour phone screens, we conducted 26 interviews. We were sustained along the way by a deep well of prayer. In addition to our regular contemplative practices and communion, the constant prayers of the intercessors and congregation have given us a rock solid spiritual foundation throughout this process. From our hearts, we thank you. Over the next several weeks, the vestry and RSC will meet for prayer and candidate review. Please continue to fast and pray for energy, wisdom, discernment, and blessing. Please also pray that the Spirit will place a clear call on the hearts of our new rector and his family. May we all abide deeply in Christ.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing.” John 15:5

College-aged Small Group - Summer Dates The CCA small group for college-aged students meets at parishioners Christina Larsen and Jonathan Olson’s home on Sunday nights at 7:00 p.m. The summer meeting dates are June 2, 16, 30, July 14, August 11 and 25. We will continue to read and discuss Augustine’s classic Confessions, a couple of pages per meeting - no homework. For the address, please call or text Jonathan at 310.971.5403, or email [email protected].

Sanctuary Next week, the front and back walls of the Sanctuary will be repainted, including the space behind the sanctuary cross. The main walls will be lightened; and after consulting the ministries involved and getting much feedback from a number of parishioners, a beautiful soft blue has been selected to complement the stained glass and to accentuate the cross. Painting should be completed by Thursday morning to minimize any residual paint odor.

Please Pray for VBS Thank you to everyone who has rallied to gather the supplies we’ve needed and to those who will be volunteering for VBS this coming week. Please pray that God would be our focus and would be glorified, that his kingdom would be made known, that he would anoint us with his Spirit, and for protection in every realm.

Next Baptism Opportunity The next opportunity for baptism will be Trinity Sunday, June 16. If you or a loved one would like to be baptized, please contact Cheryl at [email protected].

Diamondbacks Faith & Family Night – September 13 Save the date for an all-ages outing at Chase Field for the Diamondbacks' annual Faith & Family Night on Friday, September 13, at 6:40 p.m. Following the game against the Cincinnati Reds, there will be a concert, testimony from a ballplayer, and fireworks. Discounted tickets are available in the $20-$25 range and a portion of each ticket sold will benefit 1MISSION, a faith-based organization working in Mexico and Central America. Our plan is to reserve a block of seats together. We will carpool from the church at a time TBD. If you and your family are interested, email parishioner Tim Hoiland at [email protected].
