1. Definition of the center of mass
Consider a system of particles of masses m1 , m2 , m3 ,... Assume that at some particu- lar moment the particles are located at the points of space with corresponding position ⋯ vectors r1, r 2 , r 3 , , relative to a reference point Ο which is typically chosen to be the origin of an inertial 1 frame of reference (see figure).
