February 27, 2019—In honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock festival this summer, the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center presents a yearlong exhibition celebrating the smallest Peanuts character, Woodstock, named for the generation-defining music event. Opening March 17, 2019, and on view through March 8, 2020, Peace, Love, and Woodstock provides a rich snapshot of the landmark festival while tracing the evolution and life of Snoopy’s most trusted friend. Though birds appeared early in Peanuts, it was not until 1967 when a distinct little bird began to appear more frequently in the comic strip, capturing hearts and inspiring laughs with his unique personality and eccentric ways. In a strip from June 22, 1970, his name was finally revealed. “I had been reading the Life magazine article about the Woodstock festival and I had the little bird in the strip,” said Charles Schulz. “I thought Woodstock would be a good name for this bird and also, it will get the attention of these people that liked that kind of thing.” The September 1969 Life magazine that Schulz references is included in the exhibition alongside relics from the Woodstock event—the original program, poster, handbill, and tickets— and a historical overview of the event that drew an estimated 450,000 attendees to a dairy farm in upstate New York.

    YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN CHARACTER INFORMATION Snoopy Snoopy is an extroverted beagle with a Walter Mitty complex. He is a virtuoso at every endeavor- at least in his daydreams atop his doghouse. He regards his master, Charlie Brown, as "that round-headed kid" who brings him his supper dish. He is fearless though prudently cautious about "the cat next door." He never speaks- that would be one human trait too many- but he manages to convey everything necessary in facial expressions and thought balloons. A one-man show with superior intelligence and vivid imagination, he has created such multiple personalities as: Joe Cool, World War I Flying Ace, Literary Ace, Flashbeagle, Vulture, Foreign Legionnaire, etc. Lucy Lucy Van Pelt works hard at being bossy, crabby and selfish. She is loud and yells a lot. Her smiles and motives are rarely pure. She's a know-it-all who dispenses advice whether you want it or not--and for Charlie Brown, there's a charge. She's a fussbudget, in the true sense of the word. She's a real grouch, with only one or two soft spots, and both of them may be Schroeder, who prefers Beethoven. As she sees it, hers is the only way. The absence of logic in her arguments holds a kind of shining lunacy. When it comes to compliments, Lucy only likes receiving them. Schulz could arguably be called the world’s most beloved cartoonist. From his clever imagination sprang the likes of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock, Lucy, Linus and other memorable characters. With a combination of sarcasm and warmth, Schulz’s seemingly minimalist drawings and sharp wit kept the world smiling from 1950 until he retired in 1999. Schulz created nearly 18,000 comic strips during his prolific career, and his Classic Peanuts strips continue to provide intergenerational appeal to this day. This summer the Elmhurst Historical Museum marks the 65th anniversary of the Peanuts gang with the opening of “Pigskin Peanuts,” a traveling exhibition organized by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. The exhibit, which was last shown at the William J. Clinton Library in Arkansas, will be on display at the Elmhurst Historical Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst, from June 12 through August 9, 2015. While fans might associate Peanuts with the game of baseball, football also figured prominently in the comic strip.
