Statut Warszawskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego głosi, iż do zgłaszania kandydatów do tytułu uprawnieni są członkowie Rad Wydziałów, posiadający ty- tuł profesora, a wniosek do Senatu zgłasza Rada Wydziału. Uniwersytet Jagielloński – najstarsza polska uczelnia – nadał go po raz pierwszy w 1816 roku dwóm profesorom własnej uczelni. -
Ancient Plays on Stage in Communist Poland
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4312/keria.20.3.41-74 Elżbieta Olechowska Ancient Plays on Stage in Communist Poland We reached this shameful impasse, when the entire world drama, from Aeschylus to Shakespeare, to Brecht and Io- nesco, became a body of allusions to People’s Poland. (…) I dream of a form of socialist life that will abolish the un- bearable and destructive state of affairs, where the authori- ties see cultural creations and their reception as a constant threat requiring the use of force. Leszek Kołakowski1 Using ancient drama as a vehicle for propaganda or as a weapon in the ideo- logical struggle is neither simple nor predictably successful. The Greek and Roman plays have been established in European culture for millennia, their ideas, conflicts, characters remain part of human psyche “for all seasons”; whether interpreted from the point of view of the past, present, or future, they have been used “for and even against” conflicting ideologies, as per Lech Wałęsa’s famous bon mot.2 Intuitively, we would be inclined to lay such at- tempts at politicising antiquity at the door of the anti-communist intellectual opposition, who knew their classics almost as well as they knew their Pol- ish Romantic bards, rather than blame “working class” politicians for such 1 Leszek Kołakowski (1927–2009) was Polish philosopher and historian of ideas. This is his state- ment at the meeting of the Union of Polish Writers held on 29 February 1968, devoted to the banning of Adam Mickiewicz’s Dziady [The Forefathers] directed by Kazimierz Dejmek at the National Theatre [Teatr Narodowy] in Warsaw; quoted according to Marta Fik, Kultura polska po Jałcie: Kronika lat 1944–1981, Vol. -

The Universe needs more good editors, God knows.” While humbled by invitation to become the guest editor of what is to be the first international volume of Keria – studia Latina et Graeca, published to celebrate the journal’s twentieth anniversary, I am also ever so slightly nervous. Editing can use the authors’ ingredients to make a Breakfast of Champions. However, there is al- ways a possibility of a Slaughterhouse Five. -
Szymon Askenazy As a Diplomat of the Reborn Poland (1920–1923)
Studia z Dziejów Rosji i Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej ■ LII-SI(3) Marek Kornat Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences Szymon Askenazy as a diplomat of the Reborn Poland (1920–1923) Zarys treści: Studium jest próbą opracowania działalności dyplomatycznej Szymona Askenazego po odrodzeniu państwa polskiego, a zwłaszcza najmniej znanej karty, jaką była jego walka o kształt granic odrodzonej Rzeczypospolitej w Genewie 1921–1923. Outline of content: The study is an attempt to describe the diplomatic activities of Szymon Askenazy after the revival of the Polish state, and especially their least known chapter, which was his struggle for the shape of the borders of the reborn Republic of Poland in Geneva, 1921–1923. It was one of the hottest periods in the history of Polish diplomacy. Askenazy represented the interests of the reborn Poland, his chosen homeland. However, his actions did not always receive general approval of the main camps of Polish politics. He was also a spokesperson for the concept of Jews’ double consciousness: Jewish and Polish. The Current State of Research on the Life and Creative Work of Stanisław Wasylewski in Years 1945–2015
FOLIA 211 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis Studia ad Bibliothecarum Scientiam Pertinentia XIV (2016) ISSN 2081-1861 DOI 10.24917/20811861.14.18 Beata Langer The current state of research on the life and creative work of Stanisław Wasylewski in years 1945–2015 More than sixty years have passed since the death of Stanisław Wasylewski, and still there is no monograph of this one of the most popular writers of the interwar- period. This outstanding and prolific author frequently became the inspiration for a variety of analyses, but no research interest has led to preparation of the substan tial dissertation devoted to him and comprehensively describing one of the notions of his work or biography. and In 2015 one hundred and thirty years passed since the birth of the writer. 1Over- the past few years, his works once again resurface on the publishing market - knowledge about him and his work remains in a considerable dispersion. Also se lected topics have been worked out only partially. There is a need to collect and dis- cuss materials published until now. The development of the research concerning Wasylewski should be demonstrated, as well as the further investigation on the per sonality and the creative work of the author should be prepared. Stanisław Wasylewski was born in Stanisławów (now Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) inon December 18th, 1885, and he died in Opole on July 26th, 1953. He studied Polish- literature and history at the University of Lviv and made his literary debut in 1905 „Pamiętnik Literacki”. For a long time he was associated with Lviv, where he re sided since student years. -
Classical Antiquity on Communist Stage in Poland
ANTIQUITY_OKLADKA:Layout 1 1/7/15 4:24 PM Page 1 “A truly reliable and full if inevitably as yet not quite comprehensive Classical Antiquity on Communist Stage In Poland account of the relationship between Classical antiquity and the Polish Classical stage during the communist epoch, which is in itself a huge achievement and an invaluable scholarly resource. (…) A more intensive analysis Antiquity (…) takes first steps in developing interpretive models for the understanding of the unique features of Polish performance on Communist reception of Classical antiquity, and will help future scholars, especially international ones who are not au fait with the specific Polish Stage experience, orient themselves and their understanding of this particular national-cultural history. (…) It is a huge asset for the Warsaw University endeavours in Classics and Liberal Arts and will provoke intense international interest.” In Poland “Precision, reliability, and clarity are trade-marks of this worthwhile publication. Each chapter is formulated in a competent manner and written in an attractive style. Bios of playwrights inspired by antiquity, information about each performance, bibliography relative to sources and themes combine to provide an example of scholarship of the highest quality.” ANTIQUY_OKL_VERSO:Layout 3 1/7/15 4:38 PM Page 1 Series OBTA STUDIES IN CLASSICAL RECEPTION Edited by Katarzyna Marciniak Other available volumes: Polish Literature for Children & Young Adults Inspired by Classical Antiquity.
