Moro 2, 00185 Rome, Italy 3 Institute of Crystallography of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, IC-CNR, Montero- tondo, Rome, Italy 4 National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute), Kashirskoeshosse 31, 115409 Moscow, Russia Ninety years of X-ray spectroscopy research in Italy, from the X-rays dis- covery (1896), and the Fermi group theoretical research (1922-1938) to the Synchrotron Radiation research in Frascati from 1963 to 1986 are here summarized showing a coherent scientific evolution which has evolved into the actual multidisciplinary research on complex phases of condensed mat- ter with synchrotron radiation 1. The early years of X-ray research The physics community was very quick to develop an intense research in Italy on X rays, after the discovery on 5th January, 1896 by Röngten in Munich. Antonio Garbasso in Pisa [1], and then in Rome Alfonso Sella, with Quirino Majorana, Pietro Blaserna and Garbasso, published several papers on Nuovo Cimento [2], starting the Italian experimental school on X-rays research in XIX century [3]. The focus was on the mechanism of the emission by the X-ray tubes, the nature of X-rays (wave or particles), the propagation characteristics in the matter, the absorption and diffusion. Cambridge and Edinburgh at the beginning of the XX century became the world hot spots of X-ray spectroscopy with Charles Barkla who demonstrated the electromagnetic wave nature of X-ray propagation in the vacuum, similar with light and Henry Moseley, who studied the X-ray emission spectra, recorded the X-ray emission lines of most of the elements of the Mendeleev atomic table. -

Per quanto Fermi sia vissuto in un'epoca piena di drammatici eventi storici e per quanto, a causa del suo lavoro, si sia trovato ad avere in essi una parte importante, la sua vita più intensa e avventurosa fu quella intellettuale della scoperta scientifica. Nel suo libro Atomi in Famiglia la moglie Laura ha trattato altri aspetti della vita di Fermi e, ovviamente, i nostri punti di vista sono differenti: il suo è quello di una compagna devota e affezionata, il mio è quello di un discepolo amico e collega scienziato. -

Fermi Un vecchio certificato di nascita riporta che Luigi, Gaetano, Alfredo, Ranieri, Giovanni Puccianti era nato(1) a Pisa il 6 luglio 1875 alle ore sette e un quarto antimeridiane, figlio del signor cavaliere professore Giuseppe Puccianti e della signora nobil donna Arianna Pucciardi. In addition, he was involved in the social and political life of his time and suffered severe political and racial persecution during the period of Fascism. He tried repeatedly and in several cases successfully to help colleagues and students who were victims of anti-Semitism in Italy and Germany. -

To avoid pitfalls and their sometimes serious consequences, however, considerable experience with the method is needed. The case of George Placzek appears as an excellent one to illustrate the procedure and its problems. Placzek’s work covered a broad range of topics, including optical and neutron spectroscopy, neutron diffusion, nuclear reactions, and nuclear energy. He worked in a large number of places with some of the most outstanding collaborators and also as sole author during his short professional life. His publications appeared in regular, so-called source journals, in books, lecture notes and also internal reports which were classified till several years after the end of the war. In this article we analyze Placzek’s work and its impact with the aim of illustrating the power and virtues of bibliometric techniques and their pitfalls. ,QWURGXFWLRQ The term ELEOLRPHWU\ is usually applied to the quantitative investigation of the number of publications of individuals, institutions and/or disciplines and their impact as measured by the number of citations they received. The origin of modern bibliometry is related to the foundation in 1954, by E. Garfield, of the company (XJHQH*DUILHOG$VVRFLDWHV, one year before Placzek’s untimely death in 1955. In 1960 the company’s name was changed to ,QVWLWXWHRI6FLHQWLILF,QIRUPDWLRQ (ISI). Its main product at the time was &XUUHQW&RQWHQWV, a booklet containing the table of contents of journals selected to be relevant to the progress of science.1 In 1964 the ISI launched the 6FLHQFH&LWDWLRQV,QGH[(SCI), covering at that time 600 scientific journals. -

ANNIVERSARY Enrico Fermi: genius This year marks the centenary of the birth of Enrico Fermi, one of the giants of 20th- • century science, and one of the last physicists to be both an accomplished experimentalist and an influential theorist. Here, Gianni Battimelli of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" traces the life of a genius. Enrico Fermi was born on 29 September 1901 in Rome to a family with no scientific traditions. His passion for natural sciences, and in particular for physics, was stimulated and guided in his school years by an engineer and family friend, Adolph Amidei, who recognized Fermi's exceptional intellectual abilities and suggested admission to Pisa's Scuola Normale Superiore. After finishing high-school studies in Rome, in 1918 Fermi progressed to the prestigious Pisa Institute, after producing for the admission exam an essay on the characteristics of the propagation of sound, the authenticity of which the commissioners initially refused to believe. Studies at Pisa did not pose any particular difficulties for the young Fermi, despite his having to be largely self-taught using mate rial in foreign languages because nothing existed at the time in Fermi's group discovered the Italian on the new physics emerging around relativity and quantum radioactivity induced by theory. He had a sense of history, however, and care fully preserved, in folde~s marked "History," all correspondence and other documents which he thought to be of historical signiftcance. In 1951, when he seriously contemplated writing the history of the Manhattan Project, he organized the pertinent documents into ten folders, by different topics and time periods. The documents which are appended here come largely from this collection which Szilard selected himself. He also drafted an outline for his memoirs. During a period of serious illness in 1960, which kept him in the hospital for a year, he used a tape recorder-which had been put into his sick room for the purpose of an oral history project-to dictate instead the first draft of The Voice of the Dolphins and Other Stories (New York, 1961), a whimsical history of the future twenty-five years, which seemed vastly more important to him than the history of the past quarter century. However, at times he enjoyed giving interviews to interested visitors. On a few such occasions his wife switched on his tape recorder. What follows is an exact transcription of parts of these tapes, with editing limited to the minimum necessary to change spoken to written English.
