History of Baillytown and Swedish Settlement
REDISCOVERING A SWEDISH ETHNIC PAST: - THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND BAILLYTOWN, INDIANA* DAVID MCMAHON The Carlsons, Samuelsons, Johnsons and Petersons, whose names abound in atlases and platbooks from 1876 to the 1970s, are of Swedish descent. The area around the Bailly homestead became a busy Scandinavian agricultural settlement. Sarah Gibbard and Robert S. Jackson, 1978 Baillytown: An Overview Around 1850 Swedes began to settle parts of Westchester Township, Porter County, Indiana, near the sand dunes along the shores of Lake Michigan. This rural settlement was known to Swedish-Americans as Baillytown; it became the nucleus of an expanding ethnic community that later included the Swedish immigrants who settled in Chesterton and Porter, Indiana.1 The Swedes established denominational churches and societies that maintained their ethnicity well into the 1920s. They expressed love for their homeland at picnics and celebrations that mixed Swedish and American themes. Swedes, furthermore, contributed to the social and economic history of the area as farmers, railroad workers, common laborers, and prominent citizens. At its founding, Baillytown was intimately linked with the development of nearby Chicago, where the largest Swedish-American community in the nation developed. Baillytown did not have ethnic institutions as highly developed as "Swede Town" in Chicago, but its proximity to that metropolis kept it connected to Swedish-American cultural life, especially as existed around the turn of the century.2 Baillytown's close association with the Augustana Synod enabled it to maintain its Swedishness and resist overt Americanization. Baillytown's first church was founded by early organizers of the synod from Chicago, and it was the birthplace of Gustav Albert 26 Andreen, later president of Augustana College and Theological Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois.3 In the 1960s and 1970s, Baillytown was once again active as an ethnic community after years of seeming quiescence, as former residents began to restore old landmarks and preserve their heritage. -

Not since our state park system was created has the state undertaken an outdoor initiative of this potential scope. This initiative will soon begin uniting our state’s disconnected routes and place every Hoosier within 15 minutes of a trail. The whole will be much greater than the sum of its parts and will benefit Hoosiers from all walks of life. We doubled state funding from $10 million to $20 million annually to take advan- tage of this unique network of opportunities, and at first glance this is a recreation initiative, but we intend it to be much more. Our trails plan will encourage healthy habits in Hoosiers, boost tourism and enhance Indiana’s ability to attract new investment and jobs. Our trail investments can deliver. As Hoosiers enjoy our new trails, they will be hiking, walking, and rid- ing over miles of new high-speed telecommunications and utility conduits. Access to outdoor recreation also ranks among the features potential companies seek for their employees when locating a business. Reuben Wells Locomotive The Reuben Wells Locomotive is a fifty-six ton engine named after the Jeffersonville, Indiana, mechanic who designed it in 1868. This was no ordinary locomotive. It was designed to carry train cars up the steepest rail incline in the country at that time—in Madison, Indi- ana. Before the invention of the Reuben Wells, trains had to rely on horses or a cog system to pull them uphill. The cog system fitted a wheel to the center of the train for traction on steep inclines. You can now see the Reuben Wells at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. HISTORICAL INFORMATION James Llewellyn Larson was born on March 27, 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin to Ruth (Thurber) and LeRoy Larson. While attending high school, Mr. Larson spent many hours at the Chicago and North Western Railway Company's interlocking tower in Madison, Wisconsin where he learned telegraphy. He went to work for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad in 1952 as an agent, telegrapher, and tower operator. In 1953, Mr. Larson began working for the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company as a telegrapher, then as a wire changer. During his 20-year tenure with C&NW, he worked in the Operating Department, was a Train Dispatcher from 1957 to 1959, and then spent eight years as an Assistant Trainmaster and a Trainmaster. He was a System Rules Examiner from 1966 to 1968, an Assistant Division Superintendent from 1968 to 1969, Assistant Superintendent -Transportation from 1969 to 1972, where he managed Operations Center in Chicago. From 1972 to 1973, he was an Assistant Division Master of Transportation on the Twin Cities Division. Mr. Larson was recruited by Amtrak in 1973. During his 25-year tenure with Amtrak he served as Manager of Station Operations, Director of Personnel, Assistant Vice President of Administrative Staff, and Assistant Vice President of Contracts.
