  • 1 the Story of Grace Episcopal Church Sheffield
THE STORY OF GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH SHEFFIELD, ALABAMA Written and compiled by Mary Hermine Wilson CHAPTER 1 The City of Sheffield was incorporated February 17, 1885. The town, named for Sheffield, England, was predicted to be a successful industrial city. Sheffield had been selected as a site for a new large-capacity smelting furnaces, the “iron boom” years had begun. Railroads had built been built to transport the raw materials to the furnaces form the mines. The Tennessee River made it economically feasible to ship the finished product to the Eastern markets. All of this activity—the birth of a new city—attracted men of vision to this area. Some of these influential businessmen settled in Sheffield and became important in its development. Among the people moving to Sheffield were life-long Episcopalians anxious to establish their denomination here and have their own place to worship. On January 6, 1887, a group met at the home of Mr. R. C. Randolph, at 900 Montgomery Avenue (in a home which stood where the Montgomery Arms apartment complex now stands), and with the assistance of the Reverend B. F. Mower, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Florence, Alabama, organized Grace Church, Sheffield. Records do not show the names of all the persons present at this first meeting, but the first vestry elected was: Messer’s R.C. Randolph, Edward Jones, R. I. Hill, J. D. Watkins, E.C. Downs, and J. P. Lee. Mr. Randolph was elected senior warden and treasurer, and Edward Jones was elected junior warden and secretary. During 1887, services were held at the first public school in Sheffield—a frame building located on the block between 9th and 10th Streets, on Atlanta Avenue (approximately where the Threadgill School now stands).

    • TRINITY COLLEGE JULY·l948ALUMNI NEWS ISSUE BulZett'n HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT -' President's Message Dear Fellow Alumni: A year and a half ago, we launched the biggest campaign in the history of the College for our urgently needed Field House, a dormitory, an extension to the library, and endowment. This 125th Anniversary Development Program for $1,500,000 was started entirely on faith faith that alumni and friends would support with their dollars a Trinity struggling with the unprecedented responsibilities of the post-war period. The campaign shaped up quickly under the able direction of Northey Jones, '17, Martin Clement, '01, and Bob Morris, '16. These three men did yeoman service. Their enthusiastic leadership never faltered. Judge Philip McCook, '95, Charles Woodward, '98, and the late John P. Elton, '88, were towers of strength. Syd Pinney, '18, stands out as an example of a loyal Trinity man. As chairman of the Greater Hartford alumni area he did a job that will remain an inspiration. These leaders, the class agents, the area heads, and others too numerous to mention rallied to the support of the College in building up an alumni team which, two weeks before the drive's time limit, reached not only the alumni goal of $500,000 but also the total cam paign goal of a million and a half dollars. It was the gift of alumnus Charles Woodward that pushed over the top the alumni goal and thereby the total goal. Cornerstones for Memorial Field House and for Elton Hall (a dormitory named in memory of John P.

The book series will examine the role of descriptive taxonomy, its fusion with cyber-infrastructure, its future within biodiversity studies, and its importance as an empirical science. The philosophical consequences of classification, as well as its history, will be among the themes explored by this series, including systematic methods, empirical studies of taxonomic groups, the history of homology, and its significance in molecular systematics. Bishop James E. Kearney, assisted by Father Hugh J. Haffey, breaks ground for St. John Fisher College, June 20, 1949. THE BEGINNINGS OF ST. JOHN FISHER COLLEGE Hugh J. Haffey, C.S.B. St. John Fisher College Rochester, New York 1977 Copyright © 1977 St. John Fisher College Printed in the United States of America Dedication To Daniel Gerald Kennedy and Charles J. Lavery, C.S.B. who, as Trustee and President, respectively, of St. John Fisher Col lege, suggested ten years ago that I write this account-these pages are offered as an expression of my admiration and last ing gratitude. Gerry acted as my editor. Back and forth, Rochester, Houston went various drafts of the opus. In the summer of 1971, I counted seven sessions, two to three hours each, when he and I corrected, reduced the copy to its present form. Father Lavery was one of the very best students I ever taught, in high school and in college. He is now in his fourteenth year as President of the College-more than half its life. For his largesse to me in many ways, I am deeply grateful. Hugh J. Haffey, C.S.B.
