Pitts Enjoys First Travers Starter Only two years into her training career, Helen Pitts will saddle her first starter in the historic GI Travers S. Saturday at Saratoga. And the 33-year-old Kentucky native is enjoying the experience. AFor me, at this stage of my career, to run in a race like this, it means the world to me,@ Pitts confirmed. But Pitts does have some experience running horses in the Midsummer Derby. She was a long-time assistant to trainer Ken McPeek and took over that stable when McPeek decided to become a bloodstock agent in July of 2005. AWe ran Repent in the [2002] Travers with Kenny, that was the last time I was involved with it,@ Pitts continued. AHe was second that year to Medaglia Helen Pitts d=Oro, but I haven=t run anything on my B Straus own in there.@ Pitts has already had plenty of suc- cess in her young career. She trained 2005 GI Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Sweet Talker and conditions last year=s GI Gulfstream Park Breeders= Cup Turf S. hero Einstein (Brz). When Pitts saddles For You Reppo (El Corredor) in this year=s Travers, though, she=ll be going up against veteran conditioners and previous Travers winners Shug McGaughey, Carl Nafzger and Nick Zito. She recognizes it=s an uphill battle, but she thinks her charge is ready for a big effort. AHe=s doing really well,@ Pitts said of For You Reppo. AHe=s been up [at Saratoga]. He had his last work up there [five furlongs in 1:01.3] on Sunday and he=s been doing super.@ For You Reppo, a maiden winner at Gulfstream in February, thrust himself onto the Triple Crown trail with a runner-up effort behind Chelokee in a Mar. 3 Gulfstream. He finished ahead of fellow Travers hopeful Sightseeing (Pulpit) that day, before running fourth behind Hard Spun in the Mar. 24 GII Lane=s End S. The dark bay colt was aiming for the GII Arkansas Derby, but was forced to miss that race and the rest of the spring. AHe popped an abscess the day before the Arkansas Derby, so we were fighting some feet issues with him this winter,@ Pitts explained. AHe was doing super this winter, he ran with Chelokee and Sightseeing and did real well. And he was doing well going into the Arkan- sas Derby, but it was just an unfortunate thing. It was very bad timing unfortunately, but things happen for a reason.@ P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 8/24/07 • PAGE 7 of 8

Helen Pitts cont. For You Reppo continued to suffer problems with his feet and was away from the races for four months. AHe had a lot of feet issues,@ his trainer said. AOnce they start, it takes a while to get everything sorted out, but once we did, he=s been going back in the right direction. Actually he=s back as good now as he was this winter. We never stopped on him, we were just fighting feet issues and had to back off him a little bit, but I never actually missed training. I just missed a lot of works and just wanted to get him right before he went the wrong way on me.@ When For You Reppo finally made it back to the track, it was over the Arlington turf for a third-place effort in a July 25 allowance. Explaining the decision to start the sophomore on the turf, Pitts said, ANumber one, timing-wise it worked out, and, number two, I didn=t think it would hurt to try him on it. It never hurts to try them on it, with his breeding, being by El Corredor. And he actually liked it. He ran very well on it. James Graham rode him beautifully and said he loved the grass. And it was going to open up some options if we didn=t run in the Travers. We had some other options to take a grass route if we wanted.@ Pitts acknowledges For You Reppo, who is 20-1 on the Travers morning line, faces a tough task Saturday. AIt=s very ambitious, but it=s a small field and it=s al- ways worth taking a shot at it and he=s doing real well,@ she said. AIt=s worth taking a shot and seeing where you stand. He=s doing real well and that=s about all you can say.@ For You Reppo will be running against even more than his Travers foes. The colt has some big shoes to fill in the Pitts barn, which was home to future GI Preakness S. winner Curlin when he broke his maiden at Gulfstream in February. AThose two were working together in Florida this winter and it=s nice to have another top horse in the barn,@ Pitts commented. AIt=s not Curlin,@ she admitted, Abut he=s close to him.@
