TH E R E re had been an attempt, you will o u member, the part of two of the apostles to secure what seemed to the rest an unwarrant - able pre eminence ; and our Lord , while deal ing very tenderly with the two brethren , took A 2 C C THE GRA E OF EPIS OPACY . occasion to explain to all what pre - eminence in His society must mean , and what authority, H e as understood it , really consisted in . To make the matter quite clear He put two Th e pictures before them side by side . first was the lordship of the Gentiles ; the throne and state of Herod or Pilate, whom men strove to conciliate with presents and before whose frown they trembled . And then He f turned their eyes upon Himsel , whose King Ship they acknowledged with all their hearts and wished to share, and they saw One not being served , but serving ; not exacting gifts, but giving them ; surrounded not by Obsequious courtiers, but by disciples whom He taught and trained ; and devoting all the hours of the day to the service of His people m instead of laying clai upon their service . The contrast was deep and unforgettable , and the lesson from the contrast easy to draw ; it taught them that the only pre - eminence in the divine society was to be pre - eminence in ministering, and the only true authority of fl that in uence . THE GRACE OF EPISCOPACY. 3 We are met together this morning, fathers t a s and bre hren , a province of the kingdom of Christ in England , to invoke the special blessing of the Holy Spirit upon t wo of our m e w e nu b r, who having served the King , as well believe, with all their heart and mind and strength in this and that great city of His dominion , and approved themselves faith ful and wise stewards , are to be sent forth w no to still wider opportunities of service . i s l fi t And it natura and t ing, especially on ’ this great festival of our Lord s dedication i n ’ His Father s house , that to hearten them , if we may , for the new mission , we should fix our thoughts, with them , upon Him who is ' the one and only mode of a true governor, and remind them and ourselves of what sort is the authority which He now commits to m i n the His kingdom . The Son of Man came not to b e ministered a . unto , but to minister, and to give His life ” ransom for many . So our Lord sums up for us the secret of His sway over our hearts . w a s a s It not, we know, by a mere voice from 4 THE GRACE OF E PISCOPACY . the heavenly places , proclaiming the divine sovereignty and appealing for obedience , that w a s man , or could have been , recovered from “ his slavery to sin . It cost more to redeem ’ men s souls For u s men and for our salva tion He came down from heaven . The Son of God came down among us that a s Son of Man He might understand our case, our a s temptations well as our sins , our ignorance no less than our errors ; and having thus by His perfect sympathy understood our nee d s be able to supply them out of the fulness of His new divine manhood , the manhood which could not but find its life and blessedness in Hi s giving, as God finds life and blessedness n in giving . The Son of Man , the , came to minister . Being God He could not come t s o o herwise. And any authority in the Son of Man’s kingdom mus t needs be an authority which gives , which ministers . Let us for a fe w brief moments remind ourselves wha t light this doctrine of our ’ His Lord s , and still more example as the true Shepherd and Bishop of our souls, sheds THE GRACE OF EPISCOPACY . 5 upon the two great branches of episcopal — authority the authority to teach and to rule . 1 ( ) We remember that our Master, albeit to the innermost circle of the disciples He spoke with joy Of His commission from the e Father, yet in His public teaching app aled in proof of His message to the conviction it inspired in the conscience of His hearers . To the simple and sincere the teach ing com mended itself ; it went home to heart and w ill and rekindled the flame of faith in God . “ ” “ Lord , they said , Thou hast words of ” “ a etern l life ; that is , You have given us by your teaching a spring of living faith in “ ” G od ma n the living . Never , they said , “ ” spake like this Man ; that is, with such compelling authority upon the conscience . ’ O u r ~ L ord s n w a s authority , the , an authority to which the honest heart could not but wa s respond ; it the authority of influence . b e so May it always with our bishops . Along with the special commission which is given them to preach the Word of God they co n have many special opportunities . At 6 A C A THE GR CE OF EPIS OP CY. fi rma tio ns of the young, at ordinations of clergy, on many occasions of local or national rt impo ance, words spoken by them fall into hearts newly ploughed up and ready for the w seed . God grant it al ays an abundant harvest . God grant to them always to speak a word in the true spirit of divine authority , “ a word living and powerful , so that it may find an entrance and spring up to life eternal . But their commission lays upon our bishops not only “ to teach and exhort with whole t ” some doc rine, but to drive away all erroneous and strange doctrine con tra ry to ‘ God s Wor For that side of their duty also ’ they have the sanction of Christ s example .
