But can you describe the road that led you to both Montreal and to the historical and theoretical work that you have done on the city over the past decades. A little intellectual biography . I first arrived in Montreal from London, England in 1980 with my brother to join my family. (We had been living with my maternal grandmother in London.) I was almost ten years old and spent two years in Montreal before moving to Toronto. I went to junior high school and high school in Toronto, but Montreal was always a part of my consciousness and we would visit the city on occasion, and I also used to play a lot of basketball so I traveled to Montreal once or twice for basketball tournaments. As a high school student I would frequent a bookstore called Third World Books and Crafts and it was there that I first discovered Walter Rodney's The Groundings with My Brothers. Three chapters in that book were based on presentations delivered by Rodney in Montreal during and after the Congress of Black Writers. So that was my first indication that something unique had happened in Montreal. My older brother Andrew was a college student at the time in Toronto and one day he handed me a book entitled Let the Niggers Burn! The Sir George Williams Affair and its Caribbean Aftermath, edited by Denis Forsythe. -

Institutions in Crisis CRISIS OF PURPOSE IN THE IVY LEAGUE The Harvard Presidency of Lawrence Summers and the Context of American Higher Education Rebecca Dunning and Anne Sarah Meyers In 2001, Lawrence Summers became the 27th president of Harvard Univer- sity. Five tumultuous years later, he would resign. The popular narrative of Summers’ troubled tenure suggests that a series of verbal indiscretions created a loss of confidence in his leadership, first among faculty, then students, alumni, and finally Harvard’s trustee bodies. From his contentious meeting with the faculty of the African and African American Studies Department shortly af- ter he took office in the summer of 2001, to his widely publicized remarks on the possibility of innate gender differences in mathematical and scientific aptitude, Summers’ reign was marked by a serious of verbal gaffes regularly reported in The Harvard Crimson, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. The resignation of Lawrence Summers and the sense of crisis at Harvard may have been less about individual personality traits, however, and more about the context in which Summers served. Contestation in the areas of university governance, accountability, and institutional purpose conditioned the context within which Summers’ presidency occurred, influencing his appointment as Harvard’s 27th president, his tumultuous tenure, and his eventual departure. Introduction Many of us remain unaware that among the members of the American Philological Association (Society for Classical Studies since 2014) during the latter half of the nine- teenth century were people of African and African American descent, for little or noth- ing had been written about them before the American Philological Association published my pamphlet, The First Three African American Members of the American Philological Association in 2001. We have, however, understood for some time that Americans from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century were engaged in heated argu- ments about the appropriate type of education needed by Americans in general, and particularly over the needs of the newly-freed slaves after the Civil War. What we had not yet realized was that these were also concerns among members of the black diasporic community itself, which understood that the study of ancient Greek and Latin had long been the intellectual standard -

Wiley Spring 2017 TR 11:10A-12:30P TISCH 302 [email protected] Office: TISCH 329 Hours: Thursday 9:30-11:00A "My challenge was to weave into the fabric of American history enough of the presence of blacks so that the story of the United States could be told adequately and fairly.” John Hope Franklin, 1997 This lecture course is a survey of the 20th century urban African-American experience. The purpose is to provide an understanding of the role African-Americans have played in the history of the nation, from Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) to Obama’s “Post-Racial” America. This includes African-American contributions to, and exclusions from, various aspects of a democratic American society. We will engage in pluralistic discourse over the progression of the semester. We will hear from many sources while analyzing individual voices on the topic, with an understanding that the African-American experience is neither univocal nor monolithic. The course pays particular attention to migratory patterns of African-Americans within and outside of the United States, but is not meant to be a comprehensive history of African Americans in the United States. This consideration illustrates how industry, war, social segregation, international diplomacy, and family ties helped shape the relationship between the rural and urban African-American experiences. The course is interdisciplinary in nature: our investigation into the African-American experience will include methods and theory from anthropology, art criticism, environmental studies, ethnomusicology, geography, history, literary studies, and urban planning. We will use both primary and secondary sources to gain an understanding of the African-American experience over time; the course readings will be coupled with film, music, poetry, narratives, novels, and art. -

Social Identities, Volume 5, N um ber 2, 1999 B lack Revolutionary Icons and `N eoslave ’ Narrative s JOY JAMES U niversity of C olorado Over the centuries that America enslaved Blacks, those men and women most determined to win freedom became fugitives, ¯ eeing from the brutal captivity of slavery . Many of their descendants who fought the Black liberation struggle also became fugitives. These men and women refused to endure the captivity awaiting them in retaliation for their systematic effort to win freedom. But unlike runaway slaves, these men and women fought for a more expansive freedom, not merely as individuals, but for an entire nation, and sought in the face of interna- tionally overwhelming odds to build a more humane and democratic political order. (Kathleen Neal Cleaver, 1988) As a slave, the social phenomenon that engages my whole consciousness is, of course, revolution. (George Jackson, 1972) Neoslave Narrative s Historically, African Americans have found themselves corralled into dual and con¯ ictual roles, functioning as either happy or sullen slaves in compliant conformity or happy or sullen rebels in radical resistance to racial dominance. The degree to which historical slave narratives continue to shape the voices of their progeny rem ains the object of some speculation. Roberto Unger is a Brazilian philosopher and lawyer; Cornel West is a lay preacher in the African-American tradition. Every 20 years or so, Professors Unger and West teach a course together at Harvard. This Spring it’s called “American Democracy.” They bring a reading list but no notes to the stage, and they are not teaching political science. They’re teaching a compound of American wisdom literature, theology, history and their own lifetimes’ experience. They’re giving us a taste of it in conversation this week at Harvard Divinity School.” -Christopher Lydon LYDON You gentlemen are teaching–to my mind– the college course of the hour in American Democracy—and it’s not political science. To me, it’s a kind of existentialism of the collective. It’s history. It’s theory. It’s a theory of everything, but–first off– is it one theory of everything or two theories of everything? The Brazilian, the American, the legal, the theological...where are we? WEST I’m just blessed to be in the class with Roberto Unger. I think he’s one of the towering social theorists and leading philosophers of our time. We taught this course over 20 years ago. We read deTocqueville; we read a number of texts having to do with not just American democracy but the American empire and whether in fact we’re wrestling with a culture of decay and a political lethargy and escalating wealth inequality that’s sucking much of the Democratic energies out of the empire.
