"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

In the beginning, the story goes, disco was gay: Gay dancers went to gay clubs, celebrated their newly liberated status by dancing with other men, and discovered a vicarious voice in the form of disco’s soul and gospel-oriented divas. Received wisdom has it that straights, having played no part in this embryonic moment, co-opted the culture after they cottoned onto its chic status and potential profitability.

www.nightcliffcc.org.au THE UNDERGROWL THE STRICTLY UNOFFICIAL NIGHTCLIFF CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER 5th edition of 2017 – Thursday, 29 June 2017 “EXPLOSIVE!” SOME EARLY TESTIMONIALS “An absolute cracker!” Guy Fawkes “Unmissable ” William Tell “Holding all the Aces!” Luke Bayetto “Irreplaceable!“ The Environment NCC ‘SATURDAY CRICKET’ UPDATE With ‘Territory Day’ almost on our footsteps and in our Accident & Emergency wards for another year, all five Nightcliff teams are preparing to ‘light it up’ for the second half of the season. After almost seizing a famous first-innings win against top-side Darwin , who became alarmingly jittery after losing several wickets in a hurry chasing another undercooked Nightcliff first innings total, the Premier League Tigers are buoyed with knowledge that their best cricket is good enough if it is played consistently enough. The astute mathmeticians within our Premier Grade side (which there is exactly the same number of since ‘Coco’ McKinnon returned to B-Grade) have deduced that stringing a few two-day cricket wins together in succession will result in an accelerated propulsion up the ladder, with finals remaining a realistic possibility. We are quietly tipping that Udara Weerasinghe is comfortably leading Nathan Buckley in the 2017 Optimism Stakes! A nation (well, a sleepy seaside Darwin suburb) has turned their eyes and hearts to Huw ‘ Lazarus ’ Spring and his B52’s , who have propelled themselves into finals calculations on the back of a few cracking pre-(legal) fireworks wins. With two-day cricket on their smoky horizons, metronomic, chronic-ally hedonic, bionic, ironic, isotonic, napoleonic, supersonic Lachie Baird will now come right into his own.

<<< IMMEDIATE RELEASE >>> Mix the Vibe feat. David Morales “Past-Present-Future” KCD 235 US STREETDATE – 7.22.03 In the world of house music, David Morales is like an Armani suit: He never goes out of style. The guy’s been making records for almost two decades now – creating countless remixes, original tracks and vocal anthems – and if you heard any one of them in a club this weekend, chances are it wouldn’t sound out of date. You can bet it ripped the dance floor, too! If you’re holding this collection in your hand, it’s also likely that at least one part of your life has been defined, informed or even changed by David Morales’ music. Then again, maybe you bought this set because you’re new to the scene, and you want an education. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Not only does this collection catch Morales in one of his truest elements – behind the decks – it also commemorates the 10th anniversary of King Street Sounds, a label that, together with its sister imprint, NiteGrooves, has continually served some of the purest, finest music New York has to offer. Many of landmarks from King Street’s history are included here, from fierce ruling dubs (Angel Moraes’ remix of Jamico’s “Sometimes”) and full-out vocals (Kimara Lovelace’s “I Luv You More”), to brand-new cuts (Kerri Chandler’s “I Never Knew Her”) and stone-cold classics (7’s eternal “House Music”). Also exclusively included in this set are three legendary songs, "Philadelphia" (Original Demo & D.M.
