CORPORATE Amazon/ Three months ago, YouTube pulled its’ programming from Amazon’s Echo Show device. Shortly thereafter, Amazon stopped selling Google’s Nest E Thermostat, Nest’s Camera IQ, and the Nest Secure alarm system. Two weeks ago, Amazon got YouTube back on the Echo Show by simply directing users to the web version, a workaround that is not easy to follow. Last week, YouTube announced that the company was withdrawing support for its service on both the Echo Show and Amazon’s Fire TV.

Apple/ Rumors are circulating that Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, a technology introduced in 2002 as a dial up service that would listen to a song for 30 seconds and send its user a text message identifying it. Then it directs the user to services such as Apple or Spotify for purchasing or listening to the music.

DATA MRC/Digital MediaPost reported that the Media Rating Council (MRC) released its first ever Audience standards for digital audience measurement. The new standards build on the MRC’s Standard prior work on viewable ad impression measurement as well as “invalid traffic filtration” requirements, spelling out industry best practices for collecting and processing data used in estimating audience characteristics at the impression level. Also, the standards introduce the concept of “duration weighting” viewability of digital ads – laying the ground work for the MRC’s broader effort to develop a cross media measurement standard, which is also under development.

FAST FOOD McDonald’s As of January 4, 2018 – for the first time in its history – McDonald’s will include a Happy Meal on a national discount menu. Not only has The Dollar Menu returned but is upselling with $2 and $3 items. Rival Taco Bell responded by announcing it will add 20 more items to its $1 menu year. Household Debt The Federal Reserve reported that household debt totaled $12.955 trillion last quarter, up 0.9% from the spring for a 13th straight quarterly increase. As a share of U.S. economic output, household debt was about 66% last quarter versus a high of around 87% in 2009. Mortgages make up more than two-thirds of overall household debt and totaled $8.743 trillion in the third quarter. Student loans rose to $1.357 trillion. A concern: the sharp rise in delinquency for auto loans made to subprime borrowers by auto finance firms, usually via automakers or dealers at roughly $1.213 trillion.

SPORTS Gambling/Supreme A 25-year-old federal law, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, Court restricts sports betting to Nevada and three other states. VIDEO(cont’d) Turner/Nielsen Turner became the latest media company to sign on to Nielsen’s new subscription SVOD video on demand content ratings service. Turner networks include Adult Swim, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, CNN, HLN, TBS, TNT, truTV and Turner Sports coverage. How it works: the service uses technology to create an audio signature it can install on TV programs. In addition, it uses Nielsen’s national TV panel to provide demographic and household data – 44,000 homes and 100,000+ people. To date, Nielsen has signed the following companies to licensing agreements for its SVOD service: A&E, Disney-ABC, NBCUniversal, Lionsgate and Warner Bros.

YouTube YouTube unveiled plans to introduce a paid music service in March 2018. The service is referred to as Remix and will include Spotify-like on demand streaming and would incorporate elements from YouTube, such as video clips. So far, Warner Music Group, one of the world’s three major record labels, has signed on. Note: Google introduced audio-only streaming service Google Play Music in 2011.
