WHEN life gives you lemons, why not write a new Fringe World show about it. Performer Lisa Woodbrook has done just that after a 2020 that saw her win a Fringe World Weekly Cabaret Award in February for It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You: Songs of Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, followed in March by packing up her life in Melbourne within 24 hours to move home to South Perth before the WA border closed. “I had lost all my work until August and didn’t want to spend my savings sitting in an apartment in lockdown, so I just chucked everything in my car and put it on a truck,” Woodbrook said. “It was the best decision I’ve ever made.” Feeling Way Too Good: Songs of Michael Buble was inspired by the Canadian crooner himself, whose feel-good and uplifting music provides the fun and positivity Woodbrook thought everyone needed in their life right now. It has a similar formula to her It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You comedy cabaret show — which will also have an encore season at Fringe World 2021 — that includes some stand-up between songs. “Feeling Way Too Good: Songs of Michael Buble is really about everyday life and how when life gives you lemons, just sing a Michael Buble song,” she said. “It’s how I operate in my life, especially being in the performing industry where you’re constantly being told no and then one day you get a yes and you feel amazing. “You have to develop a positive mentality to just keep going, so Feeling Way Too Good is also a bit of a nod to that. You just feel too good because you love it and you don’t want to stop.” It is this passion that saw Woodbrook create It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You: Songs of Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, which is her take on dating in the modern world and has toured for two years. The musical comedy features songs such as Tears Dry On Their Own, Not Fair and Smile. “It’s a combination of hilarious and heartfelt music and I think it’s really relatable,” she said. It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You: Songs of Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen is at The Hat Trick, The Woodside Pleasure Garden, January 15 to 25.
