Perhaps we need to turfs of green, signalling the passing of snails and slugs on searach at night when the snails and slugs are more active. the low-growing bryophytes (Figure 1). In California, the white desert snail Eremarionta immaculata is more common on lichens and mosses than on other plant detritus and rocks (Wiesenborn 2003). Wiesenborn suggested that the snails might find more food and moisture there. Are these mollusks simply travelling from one place to another across the moist moss surface, or do they have a more dastardly purpose for traversing these miniature forests? Quantitative information on snails and slugs among bryophytes is scarce, and often only mentions that bryophytes are abundant in the habitat (e.g. Nekola 2002), but we might be able to glean some information from a study by Grime and Blythe (1969). In collections totalling 82.4 g of moss, they examined snail populations in a 0.75 m2 plot each morning on 7, 8, 9, & 12 September 1966. The copse snail, Arianta arbustorum (Figure 2), numbered 0, 7, 2, and 6 on those days, respectively, with weights of Figure 2. SCIENTIFIC NAME: Helminthoglypta walkeriana COMMON NAME: Morro shoulderband snail CLASS, FAMILY: Gastropoda, Helminthoglyptidae ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Hemphill, H. 1911. Descriptions of some varieties of shells, with short notes on the geographical range and means of distribution of land snails. Transactions of the San Diego Society of Natural History 1(3):102, pl. 2 (two views of shells). (Described as Helix walkeriana, with morroensis described as a variety.) TYPE MATERIAL: Roth and Sadeghian (2003) list the syntypes as follows: Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia #112424 (4 specimens), California Academy of Sciences #058838 (6), #065523 (2), #065524 (3), Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History #33958 (22), University of Colorado, Boulder #20178 (4), and United States National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution) #174679-174682 (8). RANKING/STATUS: Federally Endangered (1994), G1S1 (NatureServe – CNDDB), CR/A1ce, B1+2bc (IUCN). GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Moderately large helminthoglyptid snails with globose, helicoid shells and brown bodies. DIAGNOSTIC CHARACTERS: Only three helminthoglyptid species occur in coastal San Luis Obispo County; until recently H. morroensis was considered a subspecies of H. walkeriana (Walgren 2003). The third species, H. umbilicata, has distinctive malleated shell sculpture (Roth and Tupen 2004). Detailed morphometric analysis of shells (Roth and Tupen 2004) revealed that H. walkeriana and H. morroensis are separate species. Shells of H. walkeriana are more globose and tightly coiled, with more whorls and less papillation than those of H. morroensis. The skin color of morroensis is blackish in life, whereas in walkeriana it is medium brown, and the mantle pigmentation is more extensive in morroensis. Penial morphology also differs, with the penis of walkeriana being slender and hourglass-shaped, with simple, smooth pilasters. -

28 August 1980 PROC. BIOL. SOC. WASH. 93(2). 1980. pp. 395-404 TWO NEW SPECIES OF SONORELLA (GASTROPODA: PULMONATA: HELMINTHOGLYPTIDAE) FROM THE PINALENO MOUNTAINS, ARIZONA H. Lee Fairbanks and Richard L. Reeder Abstract.—Sonorella christenseni and S. macrophallus, new species of pulmonate land snails, are described from the Pinaleno Mountains of south- eastern Arizona. The relationships of these new Sonorella to each other and to other members of the genus are discussed. Introduction The Pinaleno Mountains, a rugged range dominated by 10,713 foot Mt. Graham, are located in Graham County, Arizona. The range contains the largest continuous area above 9,000 feet elevation of any mountain range in southeastern Arizona. There are three peaks above 10,000 feet in elevation with several additional peaks in excess of 9,000 feet. The Pinalenos lie directly north of the Dos Cabezas and Chiricahua ranges. Prior to 1950, malacological collecting in the Pinaleno Mts. was rare. The earliest trip was made by J. H. Ferriss in 1913, and Sonorella grahamensis was described from the material he collected (Pilsbry and Ferriss, 1919). Beginning in 1954, collecting in the Pinalenos increased. In that year, M. L. Walton and W. 0. Gregg collected material from the Mt. Graham area, and from that material S. imitator was described (Gregg and Miller, 1974). W. B. Miller began collecting in the Pinaleno Mts. in 1965, and since that time he and others have collected in many areas of the range. This paper de- scribes two new species of Sonorella found in the course of several col- lecting trips to the Pinalenos from 1965 through 1978. -

SPECIES FACT SHEET Common Name: Green sideband (Pacific sideband) Scientific Name: Monadenia fidelis flava (Hemphill, 1892) (Synonym: Monadenia fidelis beryllica [Chace & Chace, 1935]) Phylum: Mollusca Class: Gastropoda Order: Stylommatophora Family: Bradybaenidae Conservation Status Global Status (2005): G4G5T1T2 (last reviewed 24 Mar 2005) Rounded Global Status: T1 – Critically imperiled Reasons: Rare Oregon endemic (ORBIC, March 2005) National Status (US): N1N2 (24 Mar 2005) State Status (Oregon): S1S2 (NatureServe 2014) IUCN Red List: NE – Not evaluated Taxonomic Note This subspecies was previously known as Monadenia fidelis beryllica Chace & Chace, 1935, but the earlier name of M. f. flava Hemphill, 1892, has been resurrected as the valid name for the subspecies of M. fidelis that occurs along the coast and for some distance inland in Curry County, OR (Roth 2011, pers. comm.). Coan and Roth (1987) note that “the only extant type specimen [for M. f. flava]… is from within the range of M. f. beryllica, and is the earliest available name for that subspecies.” According to Frest and Johannes (2000), this species can also be found under the name Aglaja fidelis var. flavus Hemphill, 1892. Another taxonomic entity, Monadenia fidelis baxteriana Talmadge, 1954, has been described from the immediate vicinity of Sisters Rocks, north of Ophir, in Curry County, OR., but it has a dark brown base, and is smaller (<30 mm) (Talmadge 1954). Talmadge, who originally named the subspecies, decided in a later review (Talmadge 1961) that it was in fact synonymous with M. f. beryllica (now flava). Coan & Roth (1987) agree with this synonymy; however, Frest and Johannes (2000) believe this taxon should stand on its own as a valid subspecies given differences in anatomy and shell morphology.
