And he was working Tuesday while his Rockies teammates had the day off. But it was a good day. Needing to stay on schedule and keep the rest of the staff in line, Chatwood faced Rockies Minor Leaguers for six innings and struck out 12 while holding them to one run on four hits and one walk. Of the right-hander's 80 pitches, 59 were strikes. Chatwood also aced his assignment: To mix in all of his pitches. His fastball was up in the zone and his curveball was particularly sharp. One of his innings featured three strikeouts on 10 pitches, with a single two-strike foul ball standing between him and what's known as an immaculate inning (three strikeouts on nine pitches). "I felt good with everything," Chatwood told a reporter at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. "They're young but they're still hitters, so you've got to take them serious. "I feel like my command is where I want it to be right now. That's just the biggest thing, getting my pitch count up. I still felt strong my last inning. I think my last two were the sharpest." 6 CarGo enjoys WBC '17, happy to rejoin Rockies By Owen Perkins / MLB.com | March 21st, 2017 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A quick glance around the Rockies' clubhouse Monday morning revealed a roomful of players with wide smiles on their faces. Carlos Gonzalez was back from the World Baseball Classic, and rather than lament the second-round exit by Team Venezuela, he and his teammates reveled in the opportunity to be back together as a team. In his second Classic, Gonzalez went four games further with Venezuela than in 2013, forcing a tiebreaker and making it to the second round, where his team went winless against Puerto Rico, the United States and the Dominican Republic. "At least I'm glad that I got to play a little longer," Gonzalez said. "Last time I only played three games and we were out. Of course, you want to be in the championship, but it was a little better. It was fun." The challenge of moving on through two tough pools made for an intense break from Spring Training, and Venezuela advanced from the first round through a complicated tiebreaker process that favored its lineup's ability to put crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Gonzalez did his part, hitting .308 (8-for-26) with a pair of doubles in seven games, amping things up after starting the spring at .250 (5-for-20) in seven Cactus League games. "It's good for the players," Gonzalez said. "You're playing almost playoff games this early. It's going to help us mentally just to take everything else so slow, because we were playing fast games with a lot of adrenaline." The winless second round was tough on Venezuela, but Gonzalez found plenty of positives to make it worthwhile. "The whole second round was fun, because the teams that were in it -- U.S., Dominican, Puerto Rico, Venezuela," Gonzalez said. "It was fun to play against my teammate [Nolan Arenado]. This is not going to happen very often, so you better enjoy it. It felt weird to have a tough spot, I'm playing defense, and Nolan is hitting. What do I do now?" Arenado and reliever Jake McGee are still competing with Team USA -- the second time the team has made it to the semifinals in four Classics, and Gonzalez credits success with waking the American fans up and getting them more excited by the tournament. 7 "It's hard not to when your team is in," Gonzalez said, lighting up the locker room with his laughter. "If your team's not in it, you don't care anymore." Ultimately, Gonzalez's second Classic was worth it, and it's easy to imagine the 31-year-old leaping at the chance to represent Venezuela again in four years. "The WBC's a tournament we play for our country," Gonzalez said. "You go from playing games here when you're trying to get ready, to playing 150 percent. But it was fun being around the guys and playing against some really good players from other countries. I can't regret that." The World Baseball Classic runs through Wednesday. Bettis learned two weeks ago that his testicular cancer had spread since his Nov. 29 surgery. He began chemotherapy Monday in an effort to aggressively treat the cancer. Having caught the recurrence early gave Bettis tremendous hope for being able to beat it and get back to baseball. "Chad has handled this so gracefully and courageously," manager Bud Black said before Monday's game with the Cubs. "He's kept such a positive frame of mind around the clubhouse, and to the guys, it's been great. You could see why so many players gravitate to him and the role that he's taken on this team through a leadership position. The last couple years, he's been great. His work with guys in and around the clubhouse has shown, and even through this, he's been just a pillar of strength." Colorado is not setting any timetable for Bettis, but the 27-year-old right-hander is driven to return to the mound.

ST. PETERSBURG After his first three big-league starts, the rookie pitcher in Washington had a 2-0 record. His ERA was 1.86, and opponents were batting .149 against him. Stephen Strasburg ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. After his first three big-league starts, the rookie pitcher in Tampa Bay had a 3-0 record. His ERA was 1.35, and opponents were batting .136 against him. Jeremy Hellickson could very well end up in Triple A after his next start tonight. Kind of makes you wonder if the Rays are - how shall I put this - insane? In the ramshackle history of an expansion franchise, no Rays starting pitcher has ever made such a dramatic entrance. Hellickson has been poised, he has been efficient, he has, by far, been better than anyone could have reasonably expected. So are the Rays making a huge mistake by not taking advantage of Hellickson while fighting for first place? No, they're not. At least, not at this point. Certainly, we can all agree on the notion of seizing the day in a pennant race. We wouldn't mind spending more of ownership's money, and we might be willing to trade a prospect at the right price. But risking a young player's future? That should be nonnegotiable. And that's why this story is not as simple as it seems.

He felt close, but not quite there, and settled for a jam- shot single here, a move-the-runner fly ball there. On Tuesday night, he joined what looks like a Rockies breakout. Blackmon whacked a first-inning home run -- his first in 42 at-bats -- to straightaway center field and added two more hits in his team's fifth victory in six games, an 8-1 win over the Giants at Coors Field. "It's really good to continue to try and win games, play team baseball, even if you're not feeling real awesome at the plate or on the mound," said Blackmon, who has 15 homers -- nine of which occurred during a hot April -- and a .275 batting average. The victory -- which also included Antonio Senzatela's seven scoreless, three-hit innings in his first start of the season and Nolan Arenado's National League-leading 22nd homer -- put the Rockies back at .500 (43-43). Could it also have signaled Blackmon's return to major contributor status?     MEDIA CLIPS – February 3, 2017 Young arms among Rockies' camp invites Veteran batters Denorfia, Reynolds also on non-roster list By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | February 2nd, 2017 DENVER -- Two fast-rising pitching prospects, right-hander Ryan Castellani and lefty Sam Howard, will make their first appearances in Major League camp this spring for the Rockies, who announced their non-roster invitees on Thursday. The group includes veterans Chris Denorfia, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, andMark Reynolds, who was the Rockies' primary first baseman last year. In all, the Rockies invited 22 players, including nine pitchers, to bring the total number to 62. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout on Feb. 14, and the initial full-squad workout is Feb. 20. Castellani, who turns 21 on April 1, is a 2014 second-round pick out of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He went 7- 8 with a 3.81 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings last season at Class A Advanced Modesto against older competition in the California League. Howard, who turns 24 on March 5, was drafted a round after Castellani out of Georgia Southern. Howard went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA, and fanned 140 in 156 innings. In the latest ranking of top 30 Rockies prospects by MLBPipeline.com, Castellani was No. 12 and Howard was 20th. While non-roster invitations give the Rockies a chance to look at highly touted prospects before the Minor League season, this group also includes players who could help the big squad beginning on Opening Day -- especially pitchers.

    MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
