Narayan (1906-2001), çoğu eserinin geçtiği yer olan kurgusal kasaba Malgudi’yi tipik bir Güney Hindistan kasabası olarak tasvir eder. Malgudi, Hindistan’ın küçük bir kopyası olduğu için Narayan, Hindistan’ın İngilizler tarafından sömürgeleştirilmesine ve bunun Hint toplumuna etkisi hakkındaki yorumunu Malgudi ve Malgudi’de yaşayanlar aracılığıyla yapmıştır. Çağdaşlarının aksine, Narayan sömürgeleşmeye karşı kışkırtıcı veya isyankâr bir tutum takınmaz. Narayan’ın İngiliz karşıtı bir söylem içinde bulunarak sömürgeleşmeye karşı çıkan diğer yazarlardan farkı, İngiliz karşıtlığı yerine Hindistan’ın kendi kimliğine, tarihine ve kültürüne odaklanmasıdır. Narayan’ın kendi kültürüne güçlü bir şekilde bağlı olması ve Gandhi gibi kavgacı olmayan bir tutum sergilemesi, Malgudi’yi Hint gelenekselliğinin ve muhafazakârlığının somutlaşmış şekline dönüştürür. Narayan’ın sömürgeciliğe karşı sakin ve mesafeli duruşunu devam ettirmesinde en önemli etken anlatımında mizah ve hiciv kullanmasıdır. Sömürgeleşme sonucunda ortaya çıkan hem bireysel hem de toplumsal problemleri ve tuhaf durumları mizahi bir dille eleştirir. Narayan’ın üçlemesi olarak da bilinen Swami and Friends (1935), The Bachelor of Arts (1937) ve The English Teacher (1945) Malgudi’yi, bir çocuğun, bir üniversite öğrencisinin ve bir yetişkinin gözünden ayrıntılı bir şekilde tasvir eder. Narayan üçlemesinde sömürgeciliğe karşı tutumunu bağımsızlaşma ve kaostan uzak durma, Hintlilik ve geleneksellik ve Hintliliğe sarılarak kurtuluşa erme temalarını tekrar tekrar kullanarak sergiler. Narayan’ın üçlemesinde tekrar tekrar kullandığı temalar bağlamında yapılan bu çalışmada varılan sonuç şudur ki; Narayan, Malgudi’nin bağımsızlaşma olasılığına inanır ve bununla birlikte Hindistan’ın bağımsızlaşmasının ancak Hint değerlerine sarılması ile gerçekleşeceğini öne sürer. Narayan’s Swami and Friends, The Bachelor of Arts and The English Teacher. Master’s Thesis. Ankara, 2015. R. K. Narayan (1906-2001) depicts the fictional town of Malgudi, in which he sets most of his works, as a typical South Indian town. Since Malgudi is formed as the microcosm of India, it was through Malgudi and Malgudians that Narayan made his comments on the British colonisation of India and its effects on the Indian society. Contrary to his contemporaries, Narayan does not display a provoking or rebellious attitude towards colonialism. Narayan’s difference from the other writers who react against colonialism by employing an anti-British discourse is that he focuses on India’s own identity, history, and culture instead. Narayan’s strong attachment to his own cultural values and his rejection, like Gandhi, of an aggressive attitude shapes Malgudi as the embodiment of Indian traditionalism and conservatism. The most significant effect in Narayan’s maintaining a calm and detached position in his response to colonialism is his use of humour and irony in his narration. He criticises both the individual and social problems and unusual situations which emerge after the colonial process in India in a comic way. Known as the Narayan’s trilogy; Swami and Friends (1935), The Bachelor of Arts (1937) and The English Teacher (1945) represent Malgudi comprehensively; from the eyes of a child, a college student and an adult. Narayan in his trilogy displays his attitude towards colonialism by repeatedly dealing with the themes of decolonisation and detachment from chaos, Indianness and traditionalism, and reaching liberation by embracing Indianness. The overall conclusion drawn from the study of Narayan’s trilogy in terms of these recurrent themes is that, he believed in the prospect of decolonisation in Malgudi, but he also suggested that India’s independence it can only be achieved by embracing indigenous Indian values. K. Narayan (Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayanaswami, 1906-2001), who is considered one of the founding fathers of Indian-English literature, began his literary career in a period when India was a British colony. He produced many novels and short stories set in the fictional town of Malgudi, which can be considered the microcosm of India. Although Malgudi is a fictional place, nothing seems to be fictional in this town. In other words, through his novels and short stories set in Malgudi, Narayan portrayed the real Indian experience and the texture of Indian culture and created an authentic Indian context. Nonetheless, he has been the subject of much criticism on the grounds of choosing English as his literary language and for not displaying a clear and explicit reaction to the British colonial occupation of India. For instance, Radhika Mohanram criticises Narayan by stating that the author’s fictional town, “Malgudi undergoes no violent anti-colonial catharsis” (100). Similarly, Robert Ross complains about Narayan’s unpretentious attitude towards political subjects as he states “politics especially radical politics figure very little in his work” (89). Also Amar N. Dwivedi criticises Narayan’s novels claiming that they possess a “general lack of social, political and even existential awareness and urgent emotional involvement”

Narayan is the greatest Indian writers in English. Narayan is essentially a writer of middle class characters of Malgudi, a place of his imagination in South India. He has given a wide gallery of both male and female characters in his writings. In each of his novel, there is at least one female character who occupies an important place in the story and Rosie is such a female character in The Guide. She represents a modern woman who is educated and ambitions and strives to attain independent economic entity according to her own taste and talent although she has to pay a heavy price for it. The other female characters in the novel are Raju’s mother and Velan’s sister. Raju’s mother represents the conservative and orthodox women who follow tradition and culture. She is a dutiful wife and a loving mother. She advises both Raju and Rosie about what is right and what is wrong. But when no heed is paid to her advice, she leaves her home and goes with her brother to live with him. Velan’s sister plays a very brief role but her role is important in making Raju appear as a saint in the novel. This paper is a humble attempt to study this aspect of R.K. Narayan’s characterization. D (English) 232/1 l.i.g Awas Vikas Colony Kasganj Abstract Malgudi, now legendary, exists nowhere. It was the result of Narayan’s imagination. However, his powerful description and impressive presentation made Malgudi, as good, as a real life town. The a small town created by Narayan himself, had an imprint of traditional society. Narayan was no original thinker, nor he was interested in propagating any new idea. He largely subscribed to Hindu myths and legends. In this traditional setup, we come across clerks, doctors, tutors, school and college students, shopkeepers, house wives, film actors, artists, sculptors, journalists, astrologers, printers, etc. Rich people and beggars and even untouchables are no doubt present, but they are pushed in the background, leaving them to their fate. Narayan’s chief concern is with middle class common man, with a marked potential for the uncommon, trying to win attention for himself. They struggle towards maturity, within the accepted religious and social framework. The major characters, we come across in Malgudi, belong to the middle and upper-middle strata of society, which Narayan is intimately familiar with. Most of them are basically innocent. They are traditional and superstitious, by nature. They believe that everything in the universe is pre-ordained and that no amount of human efforts, can ease the situation; they are helpless creatures, tossed this way and that way, by the caprice of fartune.

His wonderful creation, The Financial Expert, is not an exception being a veritable goldmine for anyone interested in India and its culture. At the heart of the novel is the landscape of India, the customs, conventions and lores that are the quintessence of Indianness. Building up a new nation parallels with searching and adjusting a new identity of an Indian. Narayan’s protagonist, in the book, is forced to transcend the age-old customs and traditions of the society and embrace his new identity which he cannot do without echoing his own world.

    The English Teacher The English Teacher is written by R.K. Narayan. The mentioned novel is critically analysed on the basis of theme, plot, characterisation, setting, social values, cultural values and philosophical values as depicted by Narayan. It was published in the year of 1945 and is preceded by Swami and Friends (1935) and The Bachelor of Arts (1937). The novel dedicated to Narayan’s wife Rajam, is not only autobiographical but also poignant in its intensity of feeling. The story is a series of experiences in the life of Krishna, an English teacher and his quest towards achieving inner peace and self development. The English Teacher novel is divided into eight chapters. Chapter -I Krishna is a main character of the present novel and he is a teacher of English in Albert Mission College, Malgudi, where he has been a student earlier. He recounts a typical day at work in the opening chapter of the novel. He goes about his work mechanically without deriving any real pleasure or satisfaction out of it. He is, therefore, amused when the Principal, Mr. Brown, convenes a meeting of the faculty after college hours to impress upon his colleagues, especially those in the department of English, to help maintain purity and perfection in the language. He is particularly agitated when the students adopt American spellings for English words, e.g., spelling “honours” as “honors”. Krishna tries to make light of the situation but his head and former teacher Gajapathy sides with Brown. He tells Gajapathy that there are blacker sins in this world than a dropped vowel but Gajapathy just walks away.

A highly acclaimed writer, master story teller, his characters and his portrayal of ‘Malgudi’ with coruscating virtuosity are testament to his enduring appeal to the readers and critics alike. He is one of the very few, writing in those times, who delved deep in the world of children to find his own childhood in them. His stories containing the child characters firmly establish his status as a writer with rare insight into child psychology. This insight, however, is rooted in Narayan’s own experiences as a child. His ouvre can be read as an autobiography of the author himself. Although the autobiographical strain invests all his writings, the present article is an attempt to study his short stories as reflection of his own personal experiences, particularly with reference to his childhood. Reading his stories give the readers a peep into his own life as a child taking into consideration the adult world as viewed by the innocent eyes of a child. Narayan’s novels are generally known as the Malgudi novels. The reason behind this is obvious. All the characters are rich and poor, farmers and feuds, teachers and students, old and young, dull and wise, good and bad, innocent and hypocrite- find their existence in Malgudi. It is only with great effort that R.K. Narayan presents human relationship within the Municipal limit of Malgudi. Malgudi is Narayan's imaginary locale like ‘Lake District’ of William Wordsworth,‘Border Countries’ of Sir Walter Scott, ‘the Wessex’ of Thomas Hardy and ‘The Five Towns’ of Arnold Bennet.Malgudi is an imaginary town belonging to South India, it is situated between Madras and Tiruchirappalli. Keywords: R.K. Narayan is widely regarded as India's greatest writer of the twentieth century. His literary career is exceptionally long-lasting encompassing seven decades. His literary creations are rich and varied, which includes fourteen novels and scores of short-stories, all exceptionally set in an imaginary town Malgudi. Besides novels and essays, travelogues, retelling of Indian epics and an acclaimed autobiography, My Days, published in 1974. Though the locale is regional in character, Narayan's plots, based on the idea of characters as they are transcend the locale. He has no regard for poetic justice. His Fictions are immensely popular in India and abroad. Malgudi is the central focus of his imagination. This prominent place of the writer is the eternal source of the pleasures and sorrows of the characters of the novel. The writer the multitude sides of this imaginative location in almost all his novels. The chararacters presented in the fictions feel quite secured in the environment of Malgudi.Malgudi is really a dream for the readers. Keywords: Lalgudi, Mempi Hills, Malgudians, Nellap’s Groove, Sarayu River, Malgudi is the fictional setting of R.K. Narayan’s novels and stories. This place has comparable standard to the other writers of English Literature. It is compared to ‘boarder countries’ of Sir Walter Scott , ‘Lake District’ of William Wordsworth ,’’The Wessex’ of Thomas Hardy, or ‘five Towns’ of Arnold Bennet.Malgudi is an imaginary South Indian town round which Narayan has woven the complex pattern of the lives of his characters. The readers are taken to this imaginary land to laugh ,sympathise ,and share the vicissitudes of its inhabitants. This imaginary setting came to Narayan’s mind instantly: I remember waking up with the name Malgudi on Vijayadashami ,the day on which the goddess of learning is celebrated.

It could be in the form of poetry, prose, fiction or drama. English is not our mother tongue and we are not native speakers of English, yet when in the early decades of the nineteenth century, English was introduced as the medium of instruction in our educational system, Indians were able to read Western literature that was available in English. They found the language and the literature versatile and some intellectuals took to conveying their social and religious thoughts in this language. The writings of people like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and others started pouring in and gave rise to a body of prose literature having great socio-cultural relevance. Soon poets like Toru Dutt and many others took to writing poetry in English. But this literature was highly influenced by the style and content of English literature. INTRODUCTION Kushwant Singh is better known as an eminent Sikh historian, editor and journalist rather than a novelist. His novel Train to Pakistan is considered as an Indian classic and his latest novel The Company of Women has been hailed as a landmark in the history of Indian English fiction. R. K.
