On August 10th & 11th, the caravan of cars and buses travelled to Sloatsburg, NY for the 65th Holy Dormition Pilgrimage hosted by the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. The theme this year was: “Responding with the Heart, as did Mary and Josaphata.” This theme had a two-fold purpose, as it was trying to carry through with the theme of the week-long celebration of the enthronement of Metropolitan Archbishop Borys Gudziak – “Heart to Heart,” and the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the death of Blessed Josaphata Hordashevska, the foundress of the Sisters Servants.

The Pontifical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 11th, was concelebrated by Metropolitan Archbishop Borys Gudziak, the Celebrant and Homilist; Most Rev. , OSBM, of the of Stamford; Most Rev. Benedict Aleksiychuk, Bishop of the Eparchy of Chicago, IL; Most Rev. , Auxiliary Bishop

It is difficult time for sisters, we want the numbers to go up but they go down, 85 % of Roman Catholics who received Confirmation will leave the church.” However, Archbishop also noted “pessimism has nothing to do with the Gospel, our religion is not a coping mechanism, it is not a , it is our life.”

Catechetical Sunday Introduction September 15, 2019 The Journey to Emmaus (Lk. 24: 13-35) Every year the Catholic Church in America observes “Catechetical Sunday” in September. The ECED (Eastern Catholic Eparchial Directors of Religious Education) provides resource materials to our parishes in preparation for their upcoming Eastern Christian Formation programs.

Our theme and reflection for 2019 is “The Journey to Emmaus,” Luke, 24: 13-35. In this Gospel we see Jesus the Master Catechist, brilliantly taking advantage of a pedagogical opportunity. He attentively listens to Cleopas and his companion relate everything they have seen and heard about Jesus. When they finish speaking Jesus begins to explain to them what they do not understand. His lesson plan has three goals: • • Break Open the Scriptures • Deepen Their Appreciation of His Presence in the Eucharist • Rekindle Their Hope

Break Open the Scriptures In his writings St. Cyril of Alexandria tells us the two Emmaus disciples are not among the eleven apostles but could well be from the seventy who followed Jesus. They were acquainted with the O.T scriptures but had difficulty understanding the role of Jesus in the Plan of Salvation. When Jesus says, “How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said,” (Lk. 24: 25) two things about this statement should be noted: First, belief in Jesus is connected to proper understanding of the scriptures. In addition, all of scripture bears a prophetic, messianic significance. In breaking open the scriptures Jesus showed them it was necessary for Him to suffer, die and rise from the dead so all that was written about Him could be fulfilled. Jesus’ entire life was foreshadowed in scripture.

Deepen Their Appreciation of His Presence in the Eucharist As the journey continues Jesus accepts the invitation to dine with Cleopas and his companion, taking the opportunity for another catechetical experience. “When He was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight.” (Lk. 24:30-32) Once again Jesus is reviewing the scriptures for his audience. Bread blessed, broken and given fed the five thousand and the participants at the Last Supper. (Lk. 9:16 & 22:19) St. Ephrem the Syrian tells us, “When the disciples eyes were closed, bread too was the key whereby their eyes were opened to recognize the omniscient.” (Hymn on Paradise 15:4) The structure of the Emmaus episode reflects the structure of the Eucharistic Liturgy, where Jesus gives Himself to the Church in word and sacrament, in the proclamation of the scripture and in the Eucharistic Bread of Life.

Rekindle their Hope “They said to each other, did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures.” (Lk. 24: 32) “Holy Scripture speaks of the heart as the inner essence of a human being, the core and center of the entire person. The spiritual and moral state of the whole person depends on the state of the heart.” (Christ Our Pascha #747) Cleopas and his companion experienced a change of heart with their encounter with the Risen Christ and reminds us that even in our confusion, God is with Us.

“The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch, but also in communion and intimacy with Jesus Christ.” (GDC #80, Catechesis Tradendae) Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, through the ministry of catechesis we learn the answers to any questions about our existence can be found in the scriptures and in Jesus Christ.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Sister Mary Bernarda died at the Basilian monastery in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania. Sister Mary Bernarda’s life was a living testimony, witness to the love of Christ. During her 75 years as a Sister of St. Basil the Great, she honored this commitment, thanking God each day for the blessings He granted her and for the privilege of serving Him. Having experienced the love of Christ in her own life, she shared that wondrous experience of Christ’s love with thousands of orphans, invalids, mentally handicapped and marginalized people, her actions always speaking louder than words. She lived and witnessed a resurrected life of extreme joy, peace and hope. She exemplified the spiritual philosophy that while the physical body brings pain or suffering, there is an everlasting, eternal life that will never die. As one who lived by this philosophy, she has imprinted its meaning and expression on far more people than anyone can imagine.

508 - In blessing medicinal herbs on the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the Church blesses people for their health and for protection against infirmities. In blessing the first fruits of the new harvest, the Church blesses the consumption of God’s gifts derived from the earth. Likewise, in blessing bread, meat, butter, cheese, and eggs on Pascha (Easter), the Church blesses the consumption of the fruit of people’s labour.

509 On the feast of the Encounter of our Lord, the Church blesses candles to remind us of Christ, who is “light for revelation to the nations” (see Lk 2:32). On Palm Sunday she blesses branches to remind us to adorn ourselves with “the branches of virtues.” With these we greet Christ’s coming. The Church teaches the need to love God’s creation when she consecrates water at Theophany (Jordan), when she decorates homes with greenery at Pentecost, and adorns churches with the best creations of church art. All of this is done so that every person might understand that every moment of their lives is God’s blessing—a gift from God for the sanctification and salvation of this life.

6. I was in prison and you visited me. Souls can be imprisoned in so many ways. Addiction, prejudice, sloth, anger, and pride are all sins which chain and paralyze the soul. The soul that chooses to bind it- self to these things soon learns that the enemy is not content to allow room for any other thing. It soon becomes so overwhelmed by these sinful dispo- sitions that Christ is eventually abandoned all to- gether. Because of their choice, the Christ Who dwells sacramentally in us may be the only Christ that these people ever encounter. By visiting those who don’t know Him, we bring Him to them, within ourselves, so that He can visit and heal them.

Open Letter to Readers of “The Way” from Saint Basil Academy

The following letter to all alumnae of Saint Basil Academy, to all Ukrainians of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, and to all who care about the future of Ukrainian Catholic schools in the United States, is meant to share the critical crossroads faced by Saint Basil Academy, all-girls private Ukrainian Academy in Jenkintown, PA since 1931. I am writing to you about a moment of importance for all of us who love Saint Basil Academy. Today, we are experiencing both exciting and anxious times at our school. Excitement comes as we graduate another class of outstanding young women and fulfill our mission to empower students to become spiritual and visionary leaders. Just recently, we hosted 47 8th grade students for a test preparation course and scholarship test and 105 young women to our basketball, field hockey, and volleyball athletic camps. The accomplishments of the past year, however, have not been without challenges. Today, Saint Basil Academy is in the midst of the demographic challenges facing many schools. While our academic programs, extracurricular activities, and bonds of sisterhood have remained excellent, our ability to sustain ourselves through tuition only is no longer the case. To ensure the Academy’s mission for future St. Basil students, we are reaching out to make you aware of the Sustainability Campaign that the Academy has recently launched. The Sustainability Campaign is geared toward ensuring our future as an educational institution that fosters leadership, confidence, and self-awareness in young women, with faithfulness to our mission and our Ukrainian Catholic roots. Below are some key points about the campaign that we hope you find informative.

• The campaign’s goal is financial sustainability so that the school can continue its vision of maximizing individual potential while enhancing academic programs and the facilities. • To achieve this goal we need to increase our annual giving to $300,000 and increase major donor participation to fund a $5 million dollar endowment.

A key component of the campaign is in making everyone connected to the community aware of our need for your support. I reach out to you to join us in supporting the Sustainability Campaign. Please visit our website at www.stbasilacademy.org/giving to find out how you can help the only remaining Ukrainian Catholic Academy in the Philadelphia area ensure a strong future. Or please send your donation to: Saint Basil Academy, Sustainability Campaign, 711 Fox Chase Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046. Our deep gratitude and God’s Blessings for your generosity. Sincerely,

The Ukrainian Parish of St. Archangel Michael, Florence, invites all to participate in a Church- wide pilgrimage to the Florentine Cathedral to honor the relics of St. John Chrysostom on September 13-15. The pilgrimage will be led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, accompanied by the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC.

Two historic events will be commemorated in the pilgrimage: 580 years since the proclamation of the Union of Florence (July 6, 1439) and 55 years of the visit of His Beatitude Patriarch to Florence (January 24-26, 1964), who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, the Metropolitan of Kyiv and our first Cardinal Isidore.

Pilgrimage Program: September 13, 21:00 Basilica SS. Annunziata - Akathist to the Blessed Virgin September 14, 18:00 Battistero - Akathist to St. John Chrysostom September 15 1:30 pm Duomo Cathedral - Hierarchical Divine Liturgy 17:00 Palazzo Vecchio (Salone 500) - Meeting with the Mayor of Florence

The pilgrimage will begin on Friday, September 13, at 9:00 pm with the Akathist service to the Virgin Mary in the Sanctuary of Florence, in the Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SS. Annunziata). In the dedication to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Ukrainian community of Florence, along with all pilgrims, will pray for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine and around the world. And everyone also will remember the righteous Giorgio La Pira, Mayor of Florence 1951–1965, a tireless peacebuilder and a witness of Christian charity, who had a friendly relationship with Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. This year marks the 60th anniversary of La Pira's pilgrimage to Fatima. He embarked on a pilgrimage to Moscow and Kyiv, which took place on August 15, 1959, to convey to the leaders of the Soviet authorities the message of Our Lady of Fatima about the conversion of Russia to peace. Continuing Fatima's prophetic mission, La Pira instructed to print the text of the Akathist to the Virgin Mary and send it to all the bishops of Italy, who were then preparing for the Second Vatican Council, asking them to promote the knowledge of Eastern spirituality in order to further enliven the faith and hope of Christians and to pray for peace in the world. On Saturday, September 14, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, together with the Bishops of the Synod of the UGCC, will arrive in Florence. At 18:00 in the Baptistery (Battistero) together with the local Archbishop Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, priests and pilgrims, the Akathist to St. John Chrysostom will be served (according to the

AUGUST 25, 2019 40 Church News His Beatitude Sviatoslav to lead the pilgrimage of the UGCC Synod of Bishops to Florence (continued from previous page) Gregorian calendar, the Saint's feast will be on this day.)

The culminating day of the pilgrimage will be Sunday, September 15. At 13:30, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by His Beatitude Sviatoslav together with the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, Florence Archbishop, Ukrainian and Italian priests. This Liturgy will be a good opportunity, from the heart of Florence - its cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, where the Act of Unification of the Church of Christ was signed on July 6, 1439 - to hear the voice of the UGCC, a witness of undivided Christianity, the heir to Volodymyr's Baptism, the Church of the Ukrainian People, which cherishes good relations with the Mother-Church of ancient Constantinople and remains today, like millennia ago, in complete unity with the apostle Peter's successor - His Holiness the Pope.

All the services of the three-day pilgrimage will be sung by the Felicio Hutsul Folk Chamber Choir.

We sincerely invite everyone to Florence to pray in a joint prayer for the unity of the Church of Christ and to confirm the identity of our UGCC, which celebrates its 30th anniversary of legalization on September 17 this year. May the UGCC holy martyrs of the communist persecutions of the twentieth century, martyrs for the unity of the Church of Kyiv with the successor of the Apostle Peter pray for us and strengthen everyone in these difficult times.
