  • December 4, 2020 Dear Mayor Lyles and Charlotte City Council
December 4, 2020 Dear Mayor Lyles and Charlotte City Council Members, I’m pleased to present you with the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20). At the CRVA, we feel incredibly fortunate to lead the region’s visitor economy and to manage the City-owned venues with which we are entrusted. For the one in nine residents whose jobs are dependent on a vital and healthy tourism industry and the millions of visitors who experience Charlotte through travel, it is a responsibility we do not take lightly. Our role took on greater importance and urgency during this time of disruption and uncertainty, and I’m proud of how the CRVA has responded to the challenges of the pandemic with speed, creativity, innovation and empathy. In FY20 the CRVA’s activities directly generated an estimated $635 million in total economic impact for our community, including $368 million in incremental direct visitor spending as well as producing nearly $20 million in local tax collections. You’ll see in this report that visitor spending and hotel performance indicators for the hospitality industry had incredible momentum prior to COVID-19’s impact on travel and business. A strong partnership with the City is a fundamental aspect of our success in protecting and growing Charlotte’s market share of the visitor economy. Your recognition of the hospitality industry’s value and the subsequent steps you’ve taken to provide financial and operational support to businesses to help mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19 show great leadership and vision.
