Interim Recovery Plan No. 370 Montane Heath and Thicket of the South West Botanical Province, above approximately 900 m above sea level (Eastern Stirling Range Montane Heath and Thicket Community) 2016-2021 October 2016 1 Foreword Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Parks and Wildlife Policy Statement No. 35 (DPaW 2015a) and Department of Parks and Wildlife Corporate Guideline No. 35 (DPaW 2015b). This Interim Recovery Plan replaces plan number 52 ‘Montane Heath and Thicket of the South West Botanical Province, above approximately 900 m above sea level (Eastern Stirling Range Montane Heath and Thicket Community) 1999-2001’ by S. Barrett. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address the threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. The department is committed to ensuring that threatened ecological communities are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the department’s Director of Science and Conservation. This IRP will operate from 4 December 2016 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the ecological community is still listed as Threatened after five years, this Interim Recovery Plan will be replaced or updated. This IRP was approved by the Director of Science and Conservation on 4 December 2016. The provision of funds identified in this IRP is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting the department, as well as the need to address other priorities. -

Attendance 69 The south-west of Western Australia is the home of Caladenias, with more species than any other part of Australia. Some are found nowhere else in the world. Herb Foote's slides, Roy Hargreaves recorded commentary and orchids such as the huge Caladenia patersonii var longicauda, and the car- pets of yellow Caladenia flava enthralled all who Were there. Potting demonstrations by Jim Simmons and Les Nesbitt were conducted after the meeting closed so that those interested could get a close up view and ask questions. The President announced that $228.52 was raised at the Society for Growing Australian Plants Show. Raffle prizes were beckleri, and a bottle of liquid nitrophoska. -

Terrestrial orchids represent a wide diversity ofspecies that are characterised by an equally diverse range of life history attributes. Threatened and endangered species of terrestrial orchids have been identifed on all continents where they occur and conservation plans have been developed for some species. Even though there is a considerable amount of information on the ecology of terrestrial orchids, few species have been studied in detail and most management plans focus on habitat conservation. In this paper, we consider the diversity of terrestrial orchids and summarise information on threatened and endangered species from a global perspective. We also describe approaches to the conservation and restoration ofterrestrial orchids and develop the argument that much information is needed ifwe are to successfully conserve this diverse group ofplant species. 1. Introduction Terrestrial orchids represent a wide variety of life history types, from autotrophic evergreen to completely myco-heterotrophic species that obtain most oftheir resources from a mycobiont. Life history characteristics ofterrestrial orchids are generally well known (e.g.
