First of all, this text is connected to the First International Istanbul Ritual Studies Symposium, held at Süleyman Şah University in Istanbul, on the May 27th and 28th of 2014. This symposium was a cooperative initiative of the Department of Sociology in Istanbul and the research group ‘Ritual in Society’ of the Tilburg School of Humanities. The plan was to present and discuss case studies in the field of ritual studies. International and multi- or interdisciplinary perspectives were cen- tered, along with the creation of a space for both junior and senior scholars to interact. Ritual studies is a multidisciplinary platform or podium that emerged in the mid-1970s in the US. 1 In the beginning we especially saw cooperation between religious studies, anthropology, liturgical studies, and, in the US, also theatre stud- ies. Later the podium developed more and more into an open multidisciplinary field where one can find a sort of canon of themes and topics. In that there was, for instance, a strong interest in theory. Some of the central themes were (just to mention a few): initiation, pilgrimage, sacred place, ritual experts, ritual transfer, embodiment and, more recently, ritual failure, authenticity and cyber ritual. There are also the ‘usual suspects’ in Ritual Studies like Grimes, Bell, Rappaport, Douglas, Staal, Whitehouse and so forth. In the new millennium we see a tendency for in- novative research to be increasingly done in interdisciplinary thematic clusters. Not only is present-day Ritual Studies a cluster, as such, but we see also that Ritual Studies is part of other larger clusters. Among these are important clusters such as (again mentioning only a few): gender studies, urban studies, cultural memory stud- ies, cognitive studies (of religion), cyber studies. What we did in the symposium and in this book is challenge the Tilburg- Istanbul network to enter this Ritual Studies platform and present work where cul- tural and social phenomena and practices are approached through the lens, the entrance point of ritual. We see that, for instance, in the contribution of Scarboro via theoretical elements of ritual space, or Salazar and Beck via Turner’s theoretical work on pil- grimage and his concept of communitas . But the accent can also be on ritual practices as a thematization of cultural and social dynamics. That we find in the contribution on hair removal in Arab culture (Elayan) and the study on the n’deep ritual in the work of the Senegalese-Italian migrant author Pap Khouma (Bianchi). The book has, in this way, a very open character. Various disciplines explore cultural practices through the lens of ritual and ritual is itself, in turn, conceived of in an open way. We did not presuppose a more or less fixed definition of ritual or vision on ritual repertoires. For example, we encountered forms of traditional ritual repertoires like death and burial ritual (Nugteren) and rain rituals in Africa (Van Beek). Simultaneously we have authors who work with what Grimes would call ritualizations (such as music festivals, medical screening, gardening). The case studies show some preferences that very much are in line with Ritual Studies generally. All articles have a contemporary character. Furthermore, there is the dominance of the theme of sacred place and space (Schippers, De Ruijter, Alonso, Nugteren, Scarboro & Husain, Beck, Faro, Cirianni Salazar). Music is the thematization in two studies (Hoondert, Wijnia), and two are on cyber ritual (Alonso, Carvalho). We are also glad to have a broad spectrum in religious perspective. There is traditional African religiosity, the institutional religious contexts of Christianity and Islam (along with encounters between both of them in the Beck article on an Indonesian place of shared pilgrimage), but also the more diffused religious contexts of neo-paganism, and cultural practices with religious- ritual dimensions (the city garden of Schippers). It bears articulating that we have made the conscious choice here to allow these interesting perspectives to stand alone in their diversity rather than bringing in any comparative ambition via, for instance, this preface, an introduction, or a final chapter. Regarding the order of the articles we opted for a rather general and open framework based upon the basic dimensions of ritual: act/performance and place/space. We open with an Introduction part (I) with the article of Post which presents some historiographical and programmatic notes on the general use of ritual in studying culture. Not only are the advantages and perspectives of this way of working discussed, but explicitly also the dangers and pitfalls of the approach. After that there are two parts (II-III) with articles where ritual acting and per- formance are central. A first subpart (II) deals with practices in a general way and in a second (III) the focus is more on art performances. The next two sections (IV-V) deal with explorations chiefly thematizing place and space. Again, in the penultimate section we look at ritual from a more general gaze (IV) and then re-focus via the theme of pilgrimage (V) in the last section. Preface vii A second background is that we dedicate this book to our colleague Walter van Beek who is retiring from the chair of anthropology of religion in the Tilburg School of Humanities, November 2015. We present this book to him in the retiring ritual in November as a form of what Dutch scholars refer to as a Festschrift although it is not a traditional Festschrift , strictly speaking. That is because there is an article of Walter in this book, and normally one does not contribute to one’s own Festschrift or liber amicorum . Nevertheless the book is dedicated to Walter (Wouter in Dutch), it is a gift (a strong ritual practice) marking his farewell from the university (but not from academia) and thanking him for his enormous engage- ment both in education and research. Walter introduced not only many students and colleagues to the world of Africa, but also that of ritual and religion.

    Spectrums of depositional practice in later prehistoric Britain and beyond: grave goods, hoards and deposits ‘in between’i Anwen Cooper, Duncan Garrow and Catriona Gibson Paper accepted for publication in Archaeological Dialogues 27(2), Dec 2020 Abstract This paper critically evaluates how archaeologists define ‘grave goods’ in relation to the full spectrum of depositional contexts available to people in the past, including hoards, rivers and other ‘special’ deposits. Developing the argument that variations in artefact deposition over time and space can only be understood if different ‘types’ of finds location are considered together holistically, we contend that it is also vital to look at the points where traditionally defined contexts of deposition become blurred into one another. In this paper, we investigate one particular such category – body-less object deposits at funerary sites – in later prehistoric Britain. This category of evidence has never previously been analysed collectively, let alone over the extended time period considered here. On the basis of a substantial body of evidence collected as part of a nationwide survey, we demonstrate that body-less object deposits were a significant component of funerary sites during later prehistory. Consequently, we go on to question whether human remains were actually always a necessary element of funerary deposits for prehistoric people, suggesting that the absence of human bone could be a positive attribute rather than simply a negative outcome of taphonomic processes. We also argue that modern, fixed depositional categories sometimes serve to mask a full understanding of the complex realities of past practice and ask whether it might be productive in some instances to move beyond interpretatively confining terms such as ‘grave’, ‘hoard’ and ‘cenotaph’.

Regionale geschiedenis en etnologie in Brabant op de drempel van de eenentwintigste eeuw 1 Op 1 maart 1796 mochten vertegenwoordigers van het toenmalige `Bataafsch Brabant', het voormalige Generaliteitsland, zitting nemen in de Staten-Generaal. 2 Dit feit werd in 1996 gevierd als `tweehonderd jaar Noord-Brabant'. In het kader daarvan verscheen op 13 juni 1996 een herdenkingspostzegel. Bij een eerste blik beantwoordt die postzegel aan het beeld dat veel Brabanders en ook mij vanaf mijn kinderjaren, doorgebracht in een dorp met twee actieve gilden, zeer vertrouwd is: we zien een jonge gildenbroeder met een trom en een ouder lid met het gildenvaandel, onderdeel van een in kleurige kleding optrekkend gilde. Maar in tweede instantie heb ik zo mijn bedenkingen bij deze postzegel. Is dit nu het beeld waarmee het moderne Noord-Brabant zich wenst te representeren ten overstaan van heel Nederland? En is een afbeelding van een gilde eigenlijk wel geschikt om het verleden van tweehonderd jaar Noord-Brabant in samen te ballen? Gaat het hier niet om het zoveelste clichébeeld waarmee we gezamenlijk een mythisch en achterhaald imago van Noord-Brabant instandhouden? Hiermee stel ik drie zaken ter discussie, namelijk de actualiteit van het zelfbeeld van de hedendaagse Brabanders, de deugdelijkheid van hun visie op het eigen verleden en ten slotte de geldigheid van de bestaande Brabantbeelden. Al deze zaken zijn relevant in het kader van de leerstoel `Cultuur in Brabant', ofwel voluit `Cultuur in Brabant in sociaal-wetenschappelijk en historisch perspectief, met inbegrip van de volkscultuur'. A descriptive model is proposed and explanatory hypotheses for major adaptive changes in the regional prehistoric record are suggested for further systematic testing.

    Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org Pleistocene cave hyenas in the Iberian Peninsula: New insights from Los Aprendices cave (Moncayo, Zaragoza) Víctor Sauqué, Raquel Rabal-Garcés, Joan Madurell-Malaperia, Mario Gisbert, Samuel Zamora, Trinidad de Torres, José Eugenio Ortiz, and Gloria Cuenca-Bescós ABSTRACT A new Pleistocene paleontological site, Los Aprendices, located in the northwest- ern part of the Iberian Peninsula in the area of the Moncayo (Zaragoza) is presented. The layer with fossil remains has been dated by amino acid racemization to 143.8 ± 38.9 ka (earliest Late Pleistocene or latest Middle Pleistocene). Five mammal species have been identified in the assemblage: Crocuta spelaea (Goldfuss, 1823) Capra pyre- naica (Schinz, 1838), Lagomorpha indet, Arvicolidae indet and Galemys pyrenaicus (Geoffroy, 1811). The remains of C. spelaea represent a mostly complete skeleton in anatomical semi-connection. The hyena specimen represents the most complete skel- eton ever recovered in Iberia and one of the most complete remains in Europe. It has been compared anatomically and biometrically with both European cave hyenas and extant spotted hyenas. In addition, a taphonomic study has been carried out in order to understand the origin and preservation of these exceptional remains. The results sug- gest rapid burial with few scavenging modifications putatively produced by a medium sized carnivore. A review of the Pleistocene Iberian record of Crocuta spp. has been carried out, enabling us to establish one of the earliest records of C. spelaea in the recently discovered Los Aprendices cave, and also showing that the most extensive geographical distribution of this species occurred during the Late Pleistocene (MIS4- 2).

Jones This thesis is an analysis of aspects of ritual and religion based upon reports from archaeological sites throughout the historical territory of the Native American peoples grouped by ethnographers under the term Ohlone, as well as other relevant sources of ethnographic, historical, and biographical information. Through research and review of recorded site documentation, as well as consultation with local archaeologists, three sites which clearly and extensively represent aspects of Ohlone religious life were identified and described in detail. This included type sites for mortuary practices, rock art, and cosmology/archaeoastronomy. The compilation and analysis of this material generated important information regarding an as-yet poorly understood aspect of prehistoric life in the Central California area, as well as potentially providing insight into the role of ritual and religion in California more generally. Fortuyn was in the Dutch political spotlight for only a few months, yet he managed to change the modern Netherlands. In the wake of his assassination in 2002, the electorate ousted a liberal government, and all major parties shifted their positions rightward, especially in the area of immigration, shifts that some people have seen as making the nation less tolerant than it had been and that others contend are necessary to preserve Dutch liberalism. The Netherlands remains committed to equal rights for gay men and lesbians, and has led in the area of same-sex marriage. Other liberal social policies are also secure. For example, the possession and sale of small amounts of marijuana remain decriminalized, as do certain forms of euthanasia. Similarly, prostitution is still legal and regulated. But immigrants and refugees, especially from Muslim countries, are less welcome than they had been, at least in part as a result of Fortuyn's forceful protest against the threat to Dutch values that he saw posed by Muslim religious radicals.
