As hip-hop continues to become commercially viable, performances of Black masculinities can be easily found on magazine covers, television shows, and popular websites. How do these representations affect the collective consciousness of Black men, while helping to construct a particular brand of masculinity that plays into the White imagination? This theoretical article explores how representations of Black masculinity vary in underground versus mainstream hip-hop, stemming directly from White patriarchal ideals of manhood. Conceptual and theoretical analyses of songs from the likes of Jay-Z and Dead Prez and Imani Perry’s Prophets of the Hood help provide an understanding of the parallels between hip-hop performances/identities and Black masculinities. Interview with stic.man and Afya Ibomu By OUR HEN HOUSE Published November 9, 2013 Following is a transcript of an interview with STIC.MAN AND AFYA IBOMU conducted by JASMIN SINGER and MARIANN SULLIVAN of Our Hen House, for the Our Hen House podcast. The interview aired on Episode 200. JASMIN: Thankfully our guests today are thinking way outside the box with music, and they’re bringing lots of animal rights messages and veganism to their amazing platform. And we’re talking about Dead Prez, and specifically stic.man and his lovely partner in life, Afya Ibomu. And they are truly paving the way for new vegans and animal rights ambassadors to embrace the message, and they’re doing it in a unique and refreshing style. MARIANN: Yeah, I’m totally impressed by them, their knowledge, of particularly the health benefits of veganism and the impact it’s had on their own lives, and also broadening that to the social influences of the horrors of the standard American diet on people, and then conveying that musically. It’s just a great package. JASMIN: Dead Prez. Dead Prez is a hip hop duo composed of stic.man and M1, formed in 1996 in New York City. They are known for their confrontational style combined with socialist lyrics focused on both militant social justice and Pan-Africanism. The duo maintains an ethical stance against corporate control over the media, especially hip hop record labels. Stic.man is an American rapper, activist, and author. His wife, Afya Ibomu, is a holistic nutritionist, author, and the CEO of nattral.com, and has been a vegetarian since 1990. -

HAS THE PAST PASSED? ON THE ROLE OF HISTORIC MEMORY IN SHAPING THE RELATIONS BETWEEN AFRICAN AMERICANS AND CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN MIGRANTS IN THE USA • DMITRI M. BONDARENKO • ABSTRACT ............................................................................................................................................... African Americans and contemporary African migrants to the USA do not form a single ‘Black community’. Their relations are characterized by simultaneous mutual attraction and repulsion. Based on field evidence, the article discusses the role played in it by the reflection in historic memory and place in mass consciousness of African Americans and African migrants of key events in Black American and African history: transatlantic slave trade, slavery, its abolition, and the Civil Rights Movement in the US, colonialism, anticolonial struggle, and the fall of apartheid regime in South Africa. It is shown that they see the key events of the past differently, and different events are seen as key by each group. Collective historic memory works more in the direction of separating the two groups from each other by generating and supporting contradictory or even negative images of mutual perception. ............................................................................................................................................... For over 30 years, it has been operated by dedicated volunteer teams who unite with our mission to create, produce and sell the freshest foods to build self sustaining economic development designed for the prosperity and self-determination of present and future generations of African people worldwide. In 1972, when organizers formed the African People’s Socialist Party, they understood that economic self-reliance and self-determination were a necessity to carrying out the goals 1 of the liberation struggle. This case study draws on detailed reflection based on my own personal experience as a leader and member of the Black Action Defense Committee (BADC). The analysis demonstrates the limitations to the application of the Gramscian approach to radical adult education in the non-profit sector, I will refer to as the Non-Profit Industrial Complex (NPIC) drawing on recent research by INCITE Women of Colour! (2007). This study fills important gaps in the new fields of studies on the NPIC and its role in the cooptation of dissent, by offering the first Canadian study of a radical Black anti-racist organization currently experiencing this. This study fills an important gap in the social movement and adult education literature related to the legacy of Canadian Black Communism specifically on the Canadian left. -
