Fr. Colin’S Desk Eucharistic Celebrations Sundays 9:00am, 11:30am & 6:30pm Weekdays See “Week at a Glance” 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time— September 29th, 2013 From Fr. Colin’s Desk... In a recent interview our Holy Father, Pope Francis, employed a graphic image to describe the Bishop of Saskatoon role of the Church in reaching out to the wounded: Most Rev. Donald Bolen Pastor “I see the Church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously Very Rev. Fr. David Tumback injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, Associate Pastor heal the wounds.” 1 Fr. Colin Roy Cathedral Administrator (The Pope’s words are part of a larger section concerning his thoughts on the Church, which I Patrick Clarke recommend you read in context – see footnote below). Pastoral Associate The above image evokes within us a sense of urgency in our response to suffering. In a sense Garth Horn we are to be like medics on the frontlines searching for the fallen and tending to their wounds. Faith Formation It is not necessarily an inviting image, but it challenges us to respond necessarily to our call to Minister be the hands and feet of Christ. Nevertheless, if we are to be the hands and feet of Christ we Andy Korvemaker also need the eyes to see those who are suffering in our midst. We must be able to recognize Youth Minister the wounded, the poor who are in need. Anthony Olusola This is the problem that is presented for us in today’s gospel. We encounter the parable of the Financial Secretary rich man and Lazarus. Lazarus, covered in sores, lay starving outside the rich man’s gate, Linda Bobowski while nearby a sumptuous feast was prepared and eaten every night. We do not hear that the Facility Manager rich man mistreated Lazarus. He did not insult or beat this poor man, nor did he order his 2 Jim Nakoneshny removal from the gate. Rather, it is as though he never even noticed Lazarus’ existence, or he simply turned a ‘blind eye’ to the suffering he witnessed outside of his gate every day. Full-Time Custodians Daryl Miller Jesus challenges us to sharpen our vision, and to recognize those in our lives who are in need. Chat Linatoc We trust those promptings of the Spirit that urge us to reach out knowing that Christ goes Half-Time Custodian before us and is indeed waiting for us in the face of the poor. Our numbers are plentiful but workers are few. Please step forward and help to make our council an organization that is able to help whenever a need arises. At our next meeting we will confirm our next breakfast day which will probably be October 27 followed by another on Nov. 17. We are presently looking for a financial secretary to replace David who has served us faithfully in the past but now other commitments make it necessary to pass on the job to another. Call Shawn – 306-249-1362- if you are willing or if you know of another that can be approached. We also need a representative for the indoor games. If you have children in grades 4 to 8, you should be very interested in this position. The indoor games are into the 49th year, the next being the golden 50th at which time a special event is being planned. The games are in trouble and need your input. Rising costs and declining interest have created a challenge. We need your attendance at our meetings (the next being October 7), your help at our functions and your general support of the Knights of Columbus. A number of our knights are involved with harvest. It is a good time now to say that little prayer of thanksgiving, for the bountiful harvest and the beautiful weather, for this harvest and the past summer. We tend to pray loudly when we are in need, but forget the silent prayer of thanksgiving for all that has been given. At this time we would like to thank Jim Nakoneshny for the assistance and co-operation he has given us as we continue to serve at the bar at various functions. Thanks to our youth director, Anthony Olusola, for a great job. Andy Wilson has once again participated in the bike-a-thon to raise money for Queen’s House and is happy to report over $1,800 was raised. Thanks to all who supported his efforts. CWL – WE HAVE SEEN THE LORD! Feeling disconnected? Want to make a closer connection with God and other like-minded women? Don’t have much time? Perfect! • To Better Protect God’S People
To better protect God’s people When future historians write their histories of U.S. Catholicism, some may give Gilbert Gauthe a paragraph all to himself. Not for anything honorable that he did, but for something supremely dishonorable: He, as much as anyone, transformed sexual abuse of a minor by a Catholic priest from a personal disgrace into a national scandal. The story of this scandal is disturbing and complex. Even as the number of new cases has apparently dropped, bishops have found themselves struggling to cope with the consequences of earlier offenses that were covered up. Now even Pope Francis stands accused of not responding quickly enough, and Germany and Chile have joined the ranks of countries where the Church has abuse scandals on its hands. What follows is an overview of the history of this scandal in the United States, for the benefit of people trying to make sense of it all. It’s a perspective the bishops themselves will need as they gather in Baltimore the second full week of November for their fall general meeting. This issue is expected to dominate the agenda. Pope St. John Paul II speaks with Cardinal Bernard Law in 2002 in the pope’s private library at the Vatican. Cardinal Law had been one of the United States’ most powerful and respected bishops until his legacy was blemished by the devastating sexual abuse of minors by priests in his Archdiocese of Boston. CNS photo via L’Osservatore Romano A 1980s ‘aberration’ Start with Gilbert Gauthe. Although by no means the first abuser priest, he was the first to receive national attention as the specifics of his misdeeds and the bungling of his superiors became known.

  • Charting the Roles of Women in the Catholic Church
FutureChurch Charting the roles of women in the Catholic Church Current breakdown of male/female leadership in Vatican dicasteries Pope Francis has called for “a more incisive presence for women” in the Catholic Church. At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Azzurra Giorgi (March 13, 2013) After the resignation of Joseph Ratzinger, the Conclave that will lead to the election of a new Pope began in Vatican City. Here is the list of those who are most likely to become the new leader of the Catholic Church. After Joseph Ratzinger resigned as Pope Benedict XVI, there are great expectations of the one who will take his place. After weeks of waiting, the first day of the Conclave has arrived. Here below is the list of those who are most likely candidates for becoming the new Pope. ANGELO SCOLA [2]: Archbishop of Milan, 71 years old. Well esteemed by Ratzinger, who wanted him in the theological magazine 'Communio,' he comes from two dioceses, Milan and Venice, that gave five different Popes in the last century. He is very reluctant of taking on a label and he has an open look on modernity. Page 1 of 3 The Conclave Has Begun. Who Will Be the New Pope? • Marriage and the Family Within the Sacramentality of the Church: Challenges and Perspectives*
MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY WITHIN THE SACRAMENTALITY OF THE CHURCH: CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES* CARDINAL MARC OUELLET “The new openings for a pastoral approach based on mercy must take place within the continuity of the Church’s doctrinal tradition, which is itself an expression of divine mercy.” INTRODUCTION The upcoming Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the theme of the family is sparking unprecedented interest in the Church due to the urgency and gravity of the pastoral problems concerned as well as the hopes and expectations expressed in response to preparatory consultations. * This address was originally presented at the Opening Act of the Judicial Year of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Valencia (Valencia, Spain, 27 March 2014). Communio 41 (Summer 2014). © 2014 by Communio: International Catholic Review MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY WITHIN THE CHURCH 227 Already during Vatican Council II, the Pastoral Con- stitution Gaudium et spes placed marriage and the family at the forefront of the urgent issues of our age.1 Since the publication of the encyclical Humanae Vitae, the 1980 Synod on the family, and John Paul II’s rich teaching on this subject,2 the Church has not ceased to follow with growing concern the evolution of mores and mentalities away from the heritage transmitted by biblical revelation and the Christian tradition. Pope Francis has compared the Church’s mission in the contemporary world to a “field hospital” that treats the many wounded strewn about a battlefield.3 The image per- fectly describes the situation of marriage and the family, which for several decades has experienced a serious deteriora- tion not only on the level of couples’ lived experience but also in legislation contrary to the traditional values of the family, promoted by groups of lobbyists who favor the dominant rela- tivistic mentality.
