One of the key changes to the statutes is the new mid-term Congress. While terms of office will remain the same – a four-year cycle – this mid-term Congress is similar to the regular one in every other way. Fiba secretary General and international Olympic Committee (iOC) member patrick baumann explained the thinking behind the new Congress cycle. “We took a decision some years back to strive for more efficient and better organised member federations. it started with giving them a manual outlining the key aspects for successful governance of their institutions,” he said. “the will and the work were there, but we realised that things were not moving as fast as they could. the contact with the federations and the interaction between them were still insufficient.” baumann points out that basketball is now progressing much faster than in the past. “things happen very rapidly so you need to be there to act and take decisions. With the past system if you missed one Congress, you were out for eight years. it made it virtually impossible to acquire and exchange the tools and “We took a decision know-how that is so crucial.” the idea is that with a some years back shorter period between Congresses, members will be to strive for more more aware of what is being discussed, will participate efficient and better in the debate and return organised member home to share the acquired knowledge. federations.” “We are not only talking about tools, but also about responsibilities. Participating in sport can thus be a rewarding experience, particularly for young people, in overcoming settlement challenges.

Chile Abstract The analysis of technical-tactical performance indicators is an excellent tool for coaches, because it provides objective informa- tion on the actions of players and teams. The aim of this investigation was to study the performance indicators for the last con- tinental basketball championships. Five continental championships played in 2015 were analysed for a total of 213 matches. The variables analysed were: ball possessions, point difference, points scored, one, two and three point throws attempted and sco- red, total and defensive and offensive rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, blocks for and against, fouls committed and received, and evaluation. A descriptive analysis and performance profiles were carried out to characterise the sample. A one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction were used to identify the differences among championships. A discriminant analysis was performed to identify the performance indicators best characterising each analysed championship. The results show that there are differences among all the championships and all the performance indicators, except in three point throws scored and blocks.

Of course, the world has changed over time and to disre- gard the current economy would be fatal. This is undoubtedly the major challenge for the coming years. Addressing it will require men and women who, without losing sight of our founding princi- ples, can also provide new solutions. The required solidarity in a world defined by inequalities is the vital spark igniting FIBA’s humanist work.

  • Lindsay Gaze 1 While I Was Playing at Our National and International Level
Lindsay Gaze 1 While I was playing at our national and international level my club was privileged to host many fine teams from the United States of America and Europe as well as an occasional stop over in Asia to take part in tournaments or exhibition games. During this period I also had the chance to meet outstanding coaches who have influenced my philosophy of the game and coaching methods. One of the most significant pieces of advice was to select a style of play, learn from others who have similar points of view and stick with it. My own coach, Ken Watson, who coached Australia’s first Olympic team in 1956 and again in 1968, introduced a “shuffle” offence after being impressed by Bruce Drake, one of the assistant coaches of the USA 1956 Olympic team. When I took over coaching the Melbourne “Tigers” in 1971 I adopted similar methods, although many refinements have been made as the skills and athleticism of players have developed incredibly since then. The national teams I coached at Olympics and World Championships from 1972 to 1985 used the same methods as my club teams, but in each case the points of emphasis would vary depending on the talent available. During my time as coach of our national team we were always giving away size and height advantage to our main opponents and yet were able to produce leading scorers such as Eddie Palubinskas, Ian Davies and Andrew Gaze. In 1984 the Australian team was dubbed “the undersize over achievers. The Melbourne “Tigers” shuffle offense requires every player to be capable of playing every position and it is not unusual for the taller forwards and centres to be playing the same roles usually reserved for guards.
