LAST TIME OUT FOR THE RAMS Several years down the road, junior Larry Sanders may be asked the question, what’s the best birthday present you’ve ever received.

NEXT UP Following the contest against the Rams, the Pirates will take to the road, heading up I-64 on Wednesday for a contest against William & Mary at Kaplan Arena. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.

PIRATES AGAINST THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (CAA) Since 1995, the Pirates are 11-26 all-time against teams in the Colonial Athletic Association. In addition to Hampton’s 1-6 mark against VCU, the Pirates are 5-8 against William & Mary, 1-4 against George Mason, 0-1 against Towson, 1-0 against Georgia State, 2-4 against Old Dominion, 1-1 against Delaware and 0-2 against James Madison. Hampton faced four CAA schools last season, falling 82-73 to Towson after beating George Mason 50-44; the Pirates also beat Georgia State 62-53 and fell to Delaware 75-66 last season. This year, the Pirates will play at William & Mary (Nov. 25), at Delaware (Dec. 9) and at Towson (Dec. 19), on top of Monday’s game against VCU.

PIRATES AT HOME – HU CONVOCATION CENTER The Pirates were 11-2 when playing at the Hampton University Convocation Center during the 2007-08 season; last year, the Pirates went 5-6 at home, including a 3-4 home mark in MEAC play. Interim head coach Edward Joyner Jr. lost his home debut on Tuesday, falling 68-63 to Iona College. Joyner will look for his first home win as a head coach as the Pi- rates take on the Rams; after Monday’s contest, the Pirates won’t have another home game until they take on Fordham on Jan. 3.

PELLUM’S RUN CONTINUES Dating back to last season, sophomore forward Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) has scored in double figures in six of his last 10 games. Pellum led the Pirates with 21 points at La Salle before pouring in 10 points on 3-for-9 shooting and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line against Iona … all this after averaging 5.6 points per game in 16 contests in 2008-09. His 21 points against the Explorers was a career high for Pellum; his previous career high of 14 came last season in back-to- back games at Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T. Pellum went 8-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-6 from 3-point range in the loss at La Salle.

FREEMAN FINDING HIS WAY Senior forward Michael Freeman opened the 2009-2010 season on a strong note, coming off the bench against La Salle and pouring in 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Freeman picked up his first start of the season against Iona, scoring six points on 1-for-5 shooting and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and pulling down a pair of rebounds. Freeman averaged 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds a game for the Pirates last season, including averages on 6.4 and 4.2 in conference play. Freeman will look to improve upon those numbers this season, and he got off to a strong start at La Salle.

BITTERSWEET HOMECOMING FOR SIMPSON Pirates senior guard Vincent Simpson had a bittersweet homecoming on Nov. 14 when Hampton took on La Salle in Simp- son’s native Philadelphia. Simpson, a graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School and Preseason Second Team All-MEAC selection, poured in 18 points against the Explorers, but the Pirates lost the game 83-80. Simpson is the team’s leading returning scorer from last season; in 2008-09, Simpson led the Pirates by averaging 11.7 points a game, scoring in double figures in 17 games en route to earning Second Team All-MEAC honors.

BIG DEBUT FROM TUITT Sophomore Mike Tuitt, a transfer from Monroe College in New York, made a lasting first impression against La Salle, pour- ing in 15 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday. Tuitt went 6-for-14 from the floor in his Pirates debut, while also helping Hampton win the assists battle over La Salle 18-17. Tuitt also pulled down six rebounds, three on each end of the floor. Tuitt also led the Pirates with five assists, while also pulling in six rebounds, in Tuesday’s loss to Iona. The freshman of the Year at Monroe College, Tuitt led American Christian High School to a national championship as a junior, and for his high school career, Tuitt averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 assists per game.

BIG ON THE BENCH After having a strong 2008-09 season, the Pirates bench had a solid game on Saturday against La Salle; Hampton’s bench poured in a combined 20 points in the loss. Senior forward Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.) led the Pirates off the bench with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Hampton scored 23 points off the bench against Iona, led by eight points from sophomore guard Kwame Morgan and seven points from sophomore center Milade Lola-Charles. The Pirates averaged 24.5 points a game off the bench last season, and outscored their opponents on the bench in all but seven games on the year. Hampton scored a season-high 45 points off the bench in a win at Georgia State in 2008-09. 2009-10 HAMPTON Pirates Basketball TAKING CARE OF THE BALL Hampton only committed 13 turnovers in its season-opening loss to La Salle, while the defense forced the Explorers into 19 turnovers – scoring 21 points off of them. The Pirates only turned the ball over 14 times in Tuesday’s loss to Iona, while forcing the Gaels into 15 turnovers. For the 2008-09 season, the Pirates committed 530 turnovers, while forcing their opponents to cough up the ball a combined 552 times for a +0.7 turnover margin. So far, the Pirates have a +3.5 turnover margin this season, and will look to keep that up in tonight’s game against Iona.

THE BOOK ON HAMPTON With Edward Joyner Jr. at the helm of the Hampton University men’s basketball team, the program comes into the 2009- 2010 season with a new yet familiar face. Joyner spent three years as the lead assistant with the Pirates, and was given the title of interim head coach in the offseason after the resignation of Kevin Nickelberry.

Joyner inherits a program that went 16-16 last season, finishing seventh in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with an 8-8 mark. Though the Pirates were one of the league’s best defensive teams – second in the MEAC in scoring defense, only giving up 59.4 points a game – they only scored 57.8 points a game on offense.

With 10 letterwinners and four starters returning – including the top two scorers from a year ago – the Pirates will look to improve their offensive production, while keeping the same defensive intensity.

2008-09: Year In Review The Pirates opened the 2008-09 season winning three of their first five games, including a huge 50-44 home win over George Mason on Nov. 20. Hampton then went to Anchorage, Alaska for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The Pirates finished second in that tournament after losing to San Diego State 76-47 in the championship game.

After picking up their first MEAC win of the season over Howard in the Big Apple Classic on Dec. 6, the Pirates closed out non-conference play with four losses in five games. Once MEAC play started in full, with a 53-51 road win over Bethune- Cookman on Jan. 10, the Pirates struggled to find their consistency. The Pirates scored just 57.8 points a game on offense in conference play.

After a three-game home losing streak to Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T and Delaware State, the Pirates got back to winning with a 56-42 victory over visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore. Guard Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) had 16 points in that contest.

Hampton would go on to alternate wins and losses for much of the rest of the MEAC slate, before closing out the regular season with a pair of wins at North Carolina A&T (59-58) and at Howard (54-48). The Pirates then exacted revenge on Delaware State in the first round of the MEAC Championships with a 51-32 win. Hampton native Darrion Pellum led the Pirates with 12 points in the win, giving them a season-best three-game winning streak.

That streak would come to an end in the quarterfinals, as the Pirates fell 57-56 to South Carolina State, despite 22 points from Simpson.

The Coming Year The Pirates lose just one starter from last year’s squad – 6-foot-9 forward Donte Harrison – and three letterwinners, mean- ing the vast majority of last year’s team returns for Joyner. The Pirates’ three leading scorers from last year – Simpson, senior forward Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore guard Kwame Morgan (Largo, Md.) – are among the cornerstones for the coming season.

Simpson averaged 11.7 points a game in all of 2008-09, while pouring in 13.3 points a contest during MEAC play. In 32 games last season, Simpson scored in double figures 17 times – including a career-high 34 points on Jan. 17 against South Carolina State. Simpson went 9-for-13 from 3-point range in that contest, tying him for second on the school’s all-time list for 3-pointers made in a game with Marseilles Brown (2000) and JaFonde Williams (1996). Simpson had a stretch of eight straight games in double figures during conference play, and ended the season with 22 points in a MEAC quarterfinal loss to South Carolina State.

Freeman averaged 7.7 points a game, which was second on the team, while ranking third among the Pirates in rebounding with 4.4 a contest. Freeman scored in double figures nine times in 31 games, with his season high of 20 coming March 5 at Howard. Freeman also scored 17 points against Portland State and at Winston-Salem State. His season high of 11 rebounds came Feb. 12 at South Carolina State.

Freeman also led the team with 29 blocked shots on the season. 2009-10 HAMPTON Pirates Basketball

Morgan averaged 6.9 points a game last season, starting in 17 of the 32 games in which he played. He scored in double figures eight times, including a season- and career-high 15 against Norfolk State on Jan. 31. He went 4-for-8 from the floor in that game and 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Pellum also poured in 14 points at Towson and against Yale.

Guards Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) and Pellum will look to add a spark to the backcourt. Even though Pellum only played in 16 games last season, he averaged 5.6 points a game. He scored in double figured four times, pouring in 14 points at Norfolk State and at North Carolina A&T. He scored 13 at Morgan State on Jan. 26, and added another 12 against Delaware State in the first round of the MEAC Championships.

Tunnell, who started 23 of 32 games, averaged 6.0 points a game and 2.3 assists a contest, which was second-best on the team. His career-high of 14 points came at Georgia State on Dec. 3 and again on Feb. 12 at South Carolina State. He also had a career-high nine assists Jan. 18 against Winston-Salem State and another eight against Delaware State in the MEAC Championships.

Junior guard Jordan Brooks (Michellville, Md.) led the team with 2.6 assists a game last season, recording 83 in 32 games. He only scored in double figures once – pouring in 11 points Nov. 26 at Alaska-Anchorage – but had a career-high eight assists twice, at Towson and against Portland State.

Senior Jonathan Ntoko (Greenbelt, Md.) and redshirt sophomore Milade Lola-Charles (Laurel, Md.) also return for the Pirates; Ntoko averaged 2.1 points, while Lola-Charles averaged 6.3 minutes a game in 19 games played, recording two starts.

The Newcomers Joyner is bringing in three new players to the fold for the coming season, including a pair of transfers from Monroe Col- lege. Junior forward Charles Funches (Bayonne, N.J.) and sophomore guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) both come to Hamp- ton from the New York-based school.

The Pirates also bring in another Philadelphia product in freshman forward Karan Reed. Reed played his high school ball at Roman Catholic High.

Schedule Breakdown The Pirates will open the season on the road on Nov. 14, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on LaSalle. From there, Hampton will return to the Convocation Center to open the season on Nov. 17 against Iona and host Virginia Common- wealth on Nov. 23. The Pirates will then travel up I-64 on Nov. 25 to take on The College of William & Mary.

After participating in the World Vision Basketball Classic in Laramie, Wy. On Nov. 27-29 with Monmouth, Pepperdine and Wyoming, the Pirates will take on South Florida in Tampa on Dec. 2. From there, it’s to the Big Apple and Madison Square Garden for the annual Big Apple Classic against Howard on Dec. 5. Road contests against Delaware (Dec. 9), Towson (Dec. 19) and Virginia (Dec. 23) then await, before the Pirates return home on Jan. 3 for a game against Fordham.

The bulk of MEAC play will start on Jan. 9, when the Pirates play host to Coppin State, with Morgan State following on Jan. 11. Trips to Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T on Jan. 16 and 18 will open the road conference slate for the Pirates, followed by home dates on Jan. 23 and 25 against Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.

The Pirates will then play four in a row on the road, taking on Delaware State (Jan. 30), Maryland-Eastern Shore (Feb. 1), South Carolina State (Feb. 6) and Winston-Salem State (Feb. 8), before returning home on Feb. 13 and 15 to face Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T.

After taking on Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M on the road, the Pirates will close with three home games – Feb. 27 against Delaware State, a March 1 non-conference meeting with Longwood and the March 4 season finale against How- ard.

The 2010 MEAC Championships will be held in Winston-Salem, N.C. March 8-13. 2009-10 HAMPTON Pirates Basketball

INTERIM HEAD COACH EDWARD “BUCK” JOYNER, Jr.

Edward Joyner Jr. is entering his first year as interim head coach of the Hampton University men’s basketball program after three years as an assistant coach under Kevin Nickelberry.

As an assistant coach, he helped develop such players as Vincent Simpson, first team all-conference guard Rashad West, the MEAC’s leading scorer in 2006, and Michael Freeman, the 2006 MEAC Rookie of the Year. As academic coordinator, Joyner guided the men’s basketball program to the highest team GPA in 10 years.

Joyner came to Hampton after 11 years as the assistant head coach at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. He also served as head women’s basketball coach in the last five years of his tenure at Johnson C. Smith. Joyner also served as assistant to the Dean of Students over judiciary affairs.

During his tenure with the men’s basketball program at Johnson C. Smith, Joyner was instrumental in developing 13 first team all-conference performers and seven All-Americans – five of whom are currently playing professional basketball. The Golden Bulls made seven appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight in 2001 after capturing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship.

Joyner helped the Johnson C. Smith women reach the CIAA title game in three of his five seasons, making one NCAA Tournament appearance. In all, Joyner coaches six all-con- ference players.

Joyner played his collegiate ball at Johnson C. Smith, earn- ing letters all four seasons he played. He helped guide the Golden Bulls to three division titles, two trips to the CIAA championship game and three appearances in the NCAA Di- vision II Tournament. Joyner was named Defensive Player of the Year twice, and he finished his career among the top-ten assist leaders in Johnson C. Smith history.

Joyner is also the owner and co-coordinator of Scholars Inc., a non-profit organization in Charlotte that helps underprivi- leged children. Scholars Inc. provides summer camps for at- risk youths, group homes and an academic and sports unit that has helped at least 25 students receive college scholar- ships for athletics and academics.

A native of Winston-Salem N,C., Joyner is the son of Edward Joyner Sr., head basketball coach at St. Paul’s College, and the nephew of Steve Joyner, the head basketball coach and athletic director at Johnson C. Smith. He is married to the former Aerian Miller and they have two children: E.J. (2) and six-month old Andrew. 2009-10 HAMPTON Pirates Basketball 2009-10 Hampton Pirates Men’s Basketball Roster
