Trent Rosecrans GOODYEAR, ARIZ. — Tony Cingrani gets angry every time he gives up a hit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a spring training exhibition game – like the one he will start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies – or against the St. Louis Cardinals. As the Reds’ second-year starter sees it, it’s his job to not give up any hits and if he gives up a hit, he didn’t do his job. That makes him angry – and like a famous fictional character, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. “That’s how I get myself fired up. I need to throw harder, so I try to get super angry and throw it harder,” Cingrani said. “I’m not turning green – I’m trying to scare somebody and see what happens.” Cingrani’s intensity even turned into a meme among Reds fans, with the “Cingrani Face” becoming synonymous with an intense, scary mug. Cingrani said he saw that, and even chuckles quietly about it.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018 CLUB 2,500 On Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander tossed his fi rst complete-game shutout of the 2018 season with seven strikeouts and fi ve hits allowed. With his ninth inning punchout against rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani, the six-time All-Star became the 33rd pitcher in Major League history to reach the 2,500-strikeout plateau. CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees, who has logged 2,874 strikeouts entering play today, is the only other active pitcher to reach the milestone. Following his excellent outing yesterday, in which he fi red 7.2 innings of shutout ball with three punchouts, Texas Rangers hurler Bartolo Colon is the next-closest pitcher to the 2,500-strikeout club. The 21-year-veteran will go into his next start with 2,486 punchouts for his career. Verlander recorded his historic strikeout in his 395th career outing, becoming just the sixth pitcher in history to reach the milestone in fewer than 400 career games. The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award-winner joined Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver and Pedro Martínez, as well as Roger Clemens. Carried live by WLWT, the coin lands on tails and Daniels earns the additional $25,000 MLB.COM Lorenzen tweaks mechanics in rotation bid By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Mar. 1st, 2018 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- As he spent the second half of 2017 getting hit around and frustrated with the results, Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen had his moment of reckoning. Lorenzen's instincts for pitching had taken him as far as he could go. It was time to make changes. "The whole second half last year, I was sore -- a lot sorer than I'd like to be," said Lorenzen, who posted a 2.93 ERA in the first half and a 6.32 ERA in the second half. "I take really good care of my body, and I thought I shouldn't be this sore or take this long to recover. It was, 'Let's figure this out. It's got to be mechanics.'" Lorenzen, a reliever the past two seasons, is trying to make a bid for the rotation this spring. After a good first outing, he didn't fare well in Thursday's 8-7 walk-off win over the White Sox at Goodyear Ballpark. The right-hander pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits with two walks, three strikeouts and a wild pitch. Chicago scored four runs in the second and forced him out before his scheduled three innings.

This Week In Baseball Debuts: The May Edition Welcome to the the second issue of the This Week In Baseball Debuts newsletter. Inspired by an episode of Effectively Wild, the purpose of this newsletter is to highlight the MLB debuts that have occurred in the past week. Our goal is to not only inform you about the top prospects you already know but give you some insight into some of the lesser know players who may only be up for a single cup of coffee. This is the second in our two mega newsletters highlighting all debuts that occurred in April and May. After this week it will just be a weekly update that will be sent to your inbox every Sunday. In addition to this newsletter, a version of these profiles will also appear at Banished To The Pen. Mike Soroka, SP Born: August 4th, 1997 (20) Team: Atlanta Braves Debut: May 1, 2018 Throws: Right Bats: Right Soroka made a splash in his major league debut, throwing six solid innings, striking out five, and walking no one. Listed by FanGraphs as the #34 prospect on its Top 100, the 20-year-old righty gets a 55 future grade, with low variance. Kiley McDaniel lists the Canada native and former first-round draft pick as the Braves’ 4th best prospect, with an above-average fastball and slider right now, and the potential to develop an above- average change and above-average command. Over his four-year minor league career, Soroka has shown a propensity to keep his walks down, and keep runs from scoring.
