Growth deceleration coefficients were shown to vary widely and differ significantly among individuals. The average value of the growth deceleration coefficient for the population is 0.060. The growth of mussels in the Livojoki River is accompanied by two regular biorhythms. These biorhythm periods were roughly constant both through an individual’s ontogeny and among mussels, their average periods were 7.16 and 4.09 years. We discuss the possibility that these biorhythms are of thermodynamic nature. This petition is filed under 5 U.S.C. 553(e) and 50 CFR 424.14(a), which grants interested parties the right to petition for issue of a rule from the Secretary of the Interior. Freshwater mussels perform critical functions in U.S. freshwater ecosystems that contribute to clean water, healthy fisheries, aquatic food webs and biodiversity, and functioning ecosystems. The richness of aquatic life promoted and supported by freshwater mussel beds is analogous to coral reefs, with mussels serving as both structure and habitat for other species, providing and concentrating food, cleaning and clearing water, and enhancing riverbed habitat. The western ridged mussel, a native freshwater mussel species in western North America, once ranged from San Diego County in California to southern British Columbia and east to Idaho. In recent years the species has been lost from 43% of its historic range, and the southern terminus of the species’ distribution has contracted northward approximately 475 miles. Live western ridged mussels were not detected at 46% of the 87 sites where it historically occurred and that have been recently revisited. -

Distribution, status and threats of the freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (Linnaeus) (Bivalvia, Margaritiferidae) in Norway. Fauna norvegica 26/27: 3-14. The distribution of Margaritifera margaritifera (Linnaeus) in Norway is mainly along the coast and in the lowland. Based on a questionnaire sent to county governors’ offices and municipal administra- tions in Norway, about 430 former and existing localities have been recorded, of which about 300 are still-existing. However, the real number is probably more than twice as large. Central Norway has the highest number of documented sites. The northernmost locality is at Berlevåg (Finnmark) at 70°50’N lat., and the highest verified record is near Snåsa (Central Norway) at 472 m a.s.l. The great majority of localities are associated with Cambro-Silurian volcano-sedimentary rocks or situated below the postglacial marine limit, i.e. in areas not too poor in calcium. The species is an early immigrant, and a landlocked population in Central Norway has probably existed since 8900 14C-yr B.P. The pearl mussel has become extinct during the past few decades at as many as 30% of its localities, mostly due to urbanisation and pollution. There is a high correlation between the density of people in a county (or the proportion of cultivated land) and the “density” of extinct pearl mussel populations (r=0.91). -

LeRoy Member of the Faculty ________________________ Date ABSTRACT CHARACTERISTICS OF THREE WESTERN PEARLSHELL (MARGARITIFERA FALCATA) POPULATIONS IN THE CHEHALIS RIVER BASIN, WASHINGTON STATE Freshwater unionoid mussels are the most imperiled family of freshwater organisms in North America. In Washington State, documentation of mussel populations, abundances, and investigations of environmental conditions influencing their morphology are limited to a few studies. Here, I describe three populations of the western pearlshell (Margaritifera falcata) in the lower Chehalis River basin occurring along an ecological and physical gradient from a headwater stream to a major regional river. Quantitative analysis revealed a trend of increasing shell size as well as shell weight to length ratio along this gradient, but I found no difference in external shell measurement ratios as watershed area increased. Environmental conditions that coincide with an increase in western shell size and proportional shell weight are discussed within. Additionally, information regarding mussel distributions was gleaned from opportunistic interviews with individuals encountered during this research as well as from field notes during surveys for native fish populations. These were then compared to existing records of mussel distributions in Washington. This information led to the reporting of 15 specific mussel localities in this thesis not yet documented in existing databases. -

Mickiewicza 33, 31-120 Cracow, Poland (e-mail: [email protected]) AbSTRACT: The pearl mussel was abundant in the Sudety Mountains until the late 19th century. No live mussels were found within the present borders of Poland since the early 20th century. In 2006–2007 we did a detailed survey of 50 streams and rivers within the former range of the pearl mussel to verify its current status and assess the habitat conditions. No live mussels were found. On the whole, the rivers and streams were found to be degraded. Only four streams met the habitat requirements of the species. Well-preserved shells with a nacre layer were found at the site of the last known population in the Koci Potok stream. To determine whether the shells represented an extinct population or rather indicated the presence of the last survivors, we placed Unio crassus shells in the stream within the historical range of occurrence. Those shells dissolved at the rate of approximately 20% per year, indicating that empty shells would not have remained intact within the channel. Possibly the earlier-found shells had been preserved in the banks above the water level. The possibility that they represent the last survivors can not be excluded. Further search for the last survivors, extended to cover northern Poland, is recommended. Mapping the Late Medieval and Post Medieval Landscape of Cumbria Two Volumes Volume 1: Text Caron Egerton Newman Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University Submitted: June 2014 Abstract This study is an analysis of the development of rural settlement patterns and field systems in Cumbria from the later medieval period through to the late eighteenth century. It uses documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence. This evidence is interpreted utilising the techniques of historic landscape characterisation (HLC), map regression and maps created by the author, summarising and synthesising historical and archaeological data. The mapped settlement data, in particular, has been manipulated using tools of graphic analysis available within a Graphical Information System (GIS). The initial product is a digital map of Cumbria in the late eighteenth century, based on the county-scale maps of that period, enhanced with information taken from enclosure maps and awards, and other post medieval cartographic sources. From this baseline, an interpretation of the late medieval landscape was developed by adding information from other data sources, such as place names and documentary evidence. The approach was necessarily top-down and broad brush, in order to provide a landscape-scale, sub-regional view. This both addresses the deficiencies within the standard historical approach to landscape development, and complements such approaches. Standard historical approaches are strong on detail, but can be weak when conclusions based on localised examples are extrapolated and attributed to the wider landscape. The methodology adopted by this study allows those local analyses to be set within a broader landscape context, providing another tool to use alongside more traditional approaches to historic landscape studies. -

This advice should therefore be read together with the SAC Conservation Objectives available here. This advice replaces a draft version dated 24 January 2019 following the receipt of comments from the site’s stakeholders. You should use the Conservation Objectives, this Supplementary Advice and any case-specific advice given by Natural England when developing, proposing or assessing an activity, plan or project that may affect this site. This Supplementary Advice to the Conservation Objectives presents attributes which are ecological characteristics of the designated species and habitats within a site. The listed attributes are considered to be those that best describe the site’s ecological integrity and which, if safeguarded, will enable achievement of the Conservation Objectives. Each attribute has a target which is either quantified or qualitative depending on the available evidence. The target identifies as far as possible the desired state to be achieved for the attribute. The tables provided below bring together the findings of the best available scientific evidence relating to the site’s qualifying features, which may be updated or supplemented in further publications from Natural England and other sources. The local evidence used in preparing this supplementary advice has been cited. The references to the national evidence used are available on request. -
