Castell y Bere gehört, wie auch Dolwyddelan Castle oder Dolbadarn Castle , zu den von walisischen Fürsten errichteten Burgen. Es ist die größte und vollkommenste Anlage, die die Waliser in Nordwales errichtet haben. Dem Bau vorangegangen war ein Disput von Llywelyn the Great, walisischer Prinz und Herrscher von Gwynedd, mit seinem illegitimen Sohn Gruffudd. Llywelyn the Great ließ die Burg als eigene Residenz erbauen. Während des Eroberungfeldzuges des englischen Königs Edward I. in 1282/1283 war Castell y Bere die letzte Burg der Waliser, die sich den siegreichen Engländern ergab. Warnhinweise / Besondere Hinweise zur Besichtigung Das Überfliegen der Burg mit Drohnen ist wie bei allen vom CADW betriebenen Objekten verboten. Auf der Burg herrscht ein Rauchverbot. Das Mitführen von Hunden an der Leine ist auf der Burg erlaubt. Anfahrt mit dem PKW Von der Küstenstadt Aberystwyth über die B487 ca. 40 km nach Norden bis Rhiw Ty Neint fahren. Dort links auf die B4405 in Richtung Abergynolwyn abbiegen. Im Ort Abergynolwyn anschließend rechts in Richtung Llanfihangel-y-Pennant / Castell y Bere abbiegen und der Strasse bis zur Burg folgen. Direkt am Aufgang zur Burg befindet sich ein kostenloser Parkplatz für einige Fahrzeuge. Anfahrt mit Bus oder Bahn k.A. Wanderung zur Burg k.A. April 1283 Die walisische Garnison der von den Engländern unter König Edward I. belagerten Burg ergibt sich. Sie ist die letzte walische Burg, die von den Engländern besetzt wird. 1294 Während der walischen Rebellion gegen die englischen Besatzer wird die Burg erobert und niedergebrannt.     NEWSLETTER FOR 2019 Our President-elect for 2019 is Prof Nancy Edwards FBA who, like Mark Redknap, is an expert on the Early Mediaeval archaeology and history of Wales and Ireland. After taking her first degree at Liverpool University Nancy studied Early Mediaeval sculpture under Prof Rosemary Cramp at Durham. She came to Bangor in 1979 and inaugurated a period of considerable research in the history of early Wales, at first in the field of church history and inscribed stones, and more recently in more secular areas. Alongside her study of Wales she has worked on the complementary period in Ireland. This year has seen changes in the Trustee body with the retirement of Professor Muriel Chamberlain as Chairman. Professor Chamberlain has been chairman for almost twenty years and has been a very wise and at times formidable manager of the affairs of the Association, and a devoted worker, not only attending nearly all meetings, but also organising several very notable gatherings – the most recent, our very successful autumn weekend at Swansea last year. We marked her retirement at the Llandrindod meeting with a party and presentation after the AGM. We are very lucky that Dr Sian Rees has agreed to take her place as Chairman of Trustees. As a very experienced higher Civil Servant we know that she will guide the Association with wisdom and tact. This year we have lost through death the following members, Miss Oonagh Michaeliones of Stratford-upon-Avon, Dr J.R. Hughes of Southport, W.P.Day, of Oswestry, Dr Margaret Hunt of Peterston-super-Ely, Gareth Wyn Evans of Cardiff, Peter Mason of the Wirral who died very suddenly just as he and his wife were planning to join us at Llandrindod, and Mrs Elizabeth Walters, better known as the architectural historian Elizabeth Beasley, who died in September this year.

The National Park Authority receives about 500-600 planning applications each year, and the revised LDP will provide the foundation for determining each planning application that we receive. This LDP’s predecessor (Eryri LDP 2007-2022) had performed well against targets, and its Strategy was considered to be effective or ‘sound’. In view of this, and following consultation with relevant stakeholders, the Authority decided that a ‘short form revision’ was therefore considered appropriate. In simple terms, this basically means limited changes have been proposed to the revised LDP and the overall strategy for the revised LDP 2016-2031 remains the same as the previous LDP. There have been some important legislative changes in Wales over recent years, with the creation of the Planning (Wales) Act 2015, Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, and the Environment (Wales) Act 2016. These legislations have helped shape the content of this revised LDP. It has helped how we use both our land and other natural resources – both of which are essential for us to achieve the well-being of a sustainable Wales.

Each vied to gain power over the other, whilst also defending themselves from Anglo-Norman lords and the English king. Our story is centred on Gwynedd in north-west Wales, the most remote and mountainous of the Welsh kingdoms. Llywelyn the Great The powerful prince who united Wales Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, known as ‘Llywelyn the Great’ was one of the most famous and powerful of the Princes of Gwynedd. He was a brave warrior, but also a shrewd diplomat. By the time of his death, Llywelyn had united most of native Wales under his rule. uring his reign, Llywelyn built a chain of imposing castles Dto defend the borders of Gwynedd and the heartland of ‘Llywelyn the Great’, one of the Snowdonia. Many of the ruins can still be seen today. He was also most powerful Welsh princes a generous patron of the church and the poets. Making peace with England Llywelyn became ruler of Gwynedd around 1200, and one of his first moves was to make a treaty with King John of England. This was the first written agreement between an English king and a Welsh ruler. Llywelyn swore loyalty to the king, and in return was allowed to keep the territory he had gained in Wales. The alliance with England was strengthened in 1205 when Llywelyn married Joan, the daughter of King John.
