- AV 5779 SUMMER 2019 - VOL. 9 NO. 10

FROM YOUR RABBI: ENJOYING OUR SUMMER

This copy of our Bulletin is the last of our fiscal year, which ends on June 30th. We don?t publish a Bulletin in July and August, so take a look through these pages to see what?s happening at Ohev Sholom during the summer and how you can stay as busy as we are as the fall approaches. While the kids are away at camp, and you?re busy in the garden and preparing for a week or two at the shore, we?re closing up the year and preparing for 2019-20. Please take a moment to go through your bookshelves to make sure there aren?t any books from our Mildred & Irving Hand Library which you have forgotten to return. (Just drop them off at the temple office? no overdue fees, we?d just like them back on the shelves). We will be joined by our friends from Beth El Temple at services for part of June and July, and we will be welcomed at Beth El during the of August. Services at Ohev begin at 6 PM, Services at Beth El begin at 5:45 PM. High Holidays are on the late side this year. evening services are on September 29, Kol Nidre on October 8. The complete High Holiday schedule is located in the Bulletin. Please make sure to look for your ticket form later this summer. We will be welcoming a student rabbi for the Family Services. We also welcome back Yael Dadoun this year, to be our cantor at High Holiday Services in the Sanctuary. She will also be with us the weekends we have Bar/ Bat Mitzvah services to serve as our student rabbi/ cantor. We are thrilled that she will be with us! In the meanwhile, I?ll be around most of the summer? and here if you need me? and if not? enjoy your summer, and stop in on a Friday evening if you?re looking for some ?spiritual enrichment?. See you soon?

Your rabbi, Peter Kessler SUMMER SCHEDULE LEGACY TESTIMONIAL: REYNA JOSE

Why did I decide to be part of the Leave a Legacy program? The answer is simple? I love Temple Ohev Sholom and I want to see it thrive for many years to come. My husband, Ernie, my son, Michael and myself chose Temple Ohev Sholom to be our temple 16 years ago. We felt comfortable right from the start. We primarily joined the temple so Michael could get a Jewish education. As time went by it has become so much more for us. For myself, getting involved was a must. Teaching in the Religious School, joining the Board of Directors, being Worship Chair, and participating in Sisterhood has all been an honor. I have learned so much from the things I have experienced and participated in. If you feel as strongly as I do, if you love being part of the Temple Ohev Sholom family, please take the time to request a Letter of Intent from the Jewish Community Foundation or from our temple office. A legacy gift will help to assure that our temple will continue to thrive for many years to come. Our Religious School Facult y LEGACY TESTIMONIAL: CHRISTINE BERGER

*Note: Last month's bulletin included the incorrect testimonial listed under Christine's name. We are running Christine's testimonial below and apologize for the error. Why did I include Temple Ohev Sholom in my will and participate in the Life & Legacy Program? The answer is simple, I want to be able to give back to others what Temple Ohev has given to me and my family in the form of spirituality, support & community. For those who do not know me, I was born in the W-B/ Scranton area, grew up with a wonderful family and attended Catholic grade school, high school and college. A job opportunity brought me to Harrisburg where I met my future husband, Marvin and we were married by a rabbi from the Carlisle area in 1997. It was important to me to raise a family with a sense of religious identity and prior to the birth of our son, Benjamin, and after several meetings with Rabbi Daniel Weiner, we joined the Temple. Upon the rabbi?s suggestion we took classes led by Mildred & Irving Hand. It was then that I really developed a strong connection with Judaism and Marv and I become more active in temple life. I currently serve on the Board of Directors and Marv and I consistently participate in Rabbi Kessler?s PEP classes. The Yiddish class is our favorite! Rabbi Peter Kessler and his family, the Ohev congregation and the Harrisburg Jewish Community have always been very accepting and welcomed me into the community. It is this sense of belonging, and a sense of wonderful Jewish values and traditions that make me proud to be a Jew and a member of Temple Ohev Sholom. It makes me proud when friends and family visit our temple and have wonderful things to say about their experience and the positive vibe they receive from our Rabbi and the congregation. Therefore, I am honored to be able to share part of my legacy with Temple Ohev Sholom so generations that follow can practice Judaism in the same enriching and welcoming environment that our family has experienced.

Please remember Temple Ohev Sholom with a gift in your will, trust, retirement accounts, life insurance, or other assets.

Thank you to the Jewish Community Foundation for the 2018 Life & Legacy Grant check we recently received. We would also like to thank our LOI (Letter of Intent) signers and legacy participants that helped us reach this goal last year!!This would not be possible without your efforts. If anyone would like more information on the Life & Legacy Program please contact one of our committee members ? Stacy Feldman, Bruce Feldman, Brad Winnick, Linda Stewart or Seth Mendelsohn. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the board of directors, I invite you to join us for our annual congregational meeting on Tuesday, June 18th beginning at 7:00 p.m. We will discuss our plans for 2019-20 and will distribute the annual congregational calendar with service times and special events. All are welcome to attend to hear about our progress during the past year and the exciting things planned for the year ahead. This will be my last time to address you as temple president. For the past two years, I have enjoyed the honor of being president of this temple. It has been a great experience. Brad Winnick, a long-time member of our congregation, will become our next president at the annual meeting. We look forward to supporting Brad and our other directors during the next year. Thank you for all of the support you have given me, Seth Mendelsohn
