  • Institutional Change in an Age of Internationalization: Globalization and the Soccer Club
Institutional Change in an Age of Internationalization: Globalization and the Soccer Club A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Political Science of the College of Arts and Sciences by Tiest M. Sondaal B.A., International Affairs, Xavier University M.A., Political Science, University of Cincinnati October 2011 Committee Chair: Richard J. Harknett, Ph.D ABSTRACT This dissertation contributes to the growing literature about globalization’s impact on local institutions with a focus on the interaction between global and local forces. Specifically, the dissertation examines the two theories of glocalization and grobalization that offer contrasting explanations about the impact of globalization on local institutions. While the theory of glocalization stresses the interpenetration of the global and the local resulting in increasing hybridization, grobalization predicts that globalization overwhelms local institutions resulting in increasing homogeneity. The research reveals that while both theories tested capture to some degree institutional dynamics, they ultimately overlook the enduring power of the local. Put differently, the study finds that globalization’s effects are not pre-determined and impact local institutions differently based on the local-societal setting and the local institutional capacity to withstand unifying pressures. As a corrective, my study introduces a third conceptual frame for understanding the global-local relationship that I term ‘localism anew’, which holds that local entities can be the driving force in transforming globalization by leveraging the local in order to succeed globally – something which grobalization cannot conceive and which glocalization overlooks.

  • Players - Bobby Collins - Part 2 - Home Grown Hero
Players - Bobby Collins - Part 2 - Home grown hero Bobby Collins was one of post war football’s biggest names, bursting to prominence with Glasgow Celtic in 1949 and becoming one of their favourite sons. He enjoyed almost a quarter of a century as a professional player, the first decade of which was in Glasgow, and he achieved legendary status for his never say die approach. Born Robert Young Collins in Glasgow on 16 February 1931, he was the eldest of six children and followed his local club, Third Lanark, as a boy, often squeezing under the fence to see them play accompanied by brother Davie. He was a football fanatic from the very first, recalling later: “I was really influenced by players of the era and among a host of Scots we cheered on were the likes of Jimmy Delaney, Billy Liddell, Archie Macauley, Jimmy Caskie and two players who went on to manage at the highest level, Bill Shankly and Matt Busby. England were spoiled for choice and over the years I saw Eddie Hapgood, Stan Cullis, Joe Mercer, Stan Matthews, Frank Swift, Raich Carter, Jimmy Hagan and Tommy Lawton display their skills. I played at every opportunity and growing up I loved hearing about the likes of Hughie Gallacher, Alex James and Jimmy McMullan who proved that height did not Bobby Collins joined Celtic at 17 and quickly became a matter if you are good enough.” fans' favourite Collins was always on the short side, but never let that deter him, compensating big style with his football talent and sheer guts.

  • Miss Meccano
Miss Meccano In 2001 National Museums Liverpool held an exhibition, at the Museum of Liverpool Life and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, to celebrate one hundred years since the invention of Meccano. As part of the exhibition we put out a call for former employees to come in and be interviewed about their working lives at Meccano’s main factory in Binns Road, Liverpool. Many people responded and we have a wonderful set of interviews covering work in the factory from the 1930s up until closure in 1979. We spoke to people who worked on the production line, in the offices, as salesmen; we talked to people whose families had all worked at Meccano, who met their partners there and who loved their time spent at work with great friends and colleagues. One gentleman brought in a box of photographs related to the Miss Meccano competition. It was full of amazing images of the competitors and the judges, many of them local celebrities. We put a selection in the Liverpool Echo and asked for any former contestants to come forward. We were really lucky and several ladies got in touch, with others mentioning the competition in passing in their interviews. We think the competition ran for around twenty years and most commonly took place at the Grafton Rooms in West Derby Road. Carolann only worked at Meccano for a year but was persuaded by her supervisor to enter the competition. She recalls wearing a full-length halter neck dress and her long dark hair up in a ‘bubble fashion’ which was all the rage at the time.
