FOUNDATION SUPPORT Ann Jackson Family Foundation Schlinger Chrisman Foundation Hutton Parker Foundation Shubert Foundation The Léni Fund Towbes Foundation Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation Zegar Family Foundation Santa Barbara Foundation WELCOME TO ETC While most Decembers we present plays that are not about the holiday season, It’s a Wonderful Life is the quintessential Give the Gift holiday story. At a time when we’re all feeling a bit battered by the news and life seems particularly complex, it’s a nice respite to return to a simpler time, a time when families would gather around the television set to watch a Jimmy Stewart movie – or even further back, to when families found their entertainment of Great Theater! by huddling around the radio. Yet it seems that all artistic work today is being refracted through the prism of our current political climate. (Fun fact: in one early draft of the film script, George is an idealistic politician who attempts suicide after losing an election.) And in JONATHAN FOX any case, the story is not as simple – not as “black and white” ARTISTIC DIRECTOR – as we often remember it to be. In fact, when the film debuted, the FBI maintained that, given the depiction of the Banker as evil, it was coded Communist propaganda. And while the people of Bedford Falls show themselves to be ultimately good and kind, it’s worth noting that – spoiler alert! – the evil Mr. Potter never gets punished, nor does he repent in the face of the community’s love and support of George and his family. In that sense, Wonderful Life is a mirror image of other holiday classic stories such as A Christmas Carol and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, in which the avaricious characters go through a transformation and learn to open their hearts. In this story, it’s the sympathetic and empathic hero who experiences an epiphany and realizes that he must persist no matter how difficult the times are. Too many people depend on him and his beneficence. I suppose in that sense this truly is a holiday story for our time.

We are so pleased to welcome you to The New Vic for the second production of ETC’s 41st season – It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, adapted by Joe Landry from Frank Capra’s classic 1946 film. When I asked my son if he remembered the movie, his answer was, “Well, Mom, I did GIFT CERTIFICATES ON SALE NOW! grow up in the US.” Frank Capra developed the script during the height of the studio system when writers weren’t always credited, which is why so few people know that Dorothy Parker, Dalton Trumbo Theater tickets and Clifford Odets worked on this film. Clifford Odets was known to say: “Any idiot can face a crisis. It’s day-to-day living that wears you out.” What an apt description of what make great gifts! JILL SELTZER George Bailey is up against. MANAGING DIRECTOR Supposedly upon hearing Frank Capra’s synopsis of this movie’s plot, Jimmy Stewart said: “Frank, if you want me to be in a picture about a guy ETC gift certificates do not expire and that wants to kill himself and an angel comes down named Clarence who can’t swim and I may be redeemed for any ETC production. save him…. when do we start?” We hope that you enjoy tonight’s production, and that you will feel inclined to make a gift Purchase at our Box Office at to ETC. We’ve made it easy by including an envelope in this playbill. We think you’ll agree that It’s a Wonderful Life makes for great theater. We at ETC believe theater is what makes 33 W. Victoria Street or online at etcsb.org for A Wonderful Life. Happy holidays! A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

In 1986, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, director Frank Capra reflected on It’s a Wonderful Life. He wanted the movie to reflect the compelling words of Fra "Jane Austen's Giovanni Giocondo of nearly five centuries ago, who is believed to have said, “The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy.” Given that novels really sing!" I can’t think of a better reason to tell this timeless cautionary tale, I have tried to honor that vision in this production while also offering a little something new. LA TIMES Faithfully adapted by Joe Landry, the play originally takes place at a recording studio in New York City in 1946 where a group of actors are set to record a live radio broadcast of It’s a Wonderful Life in front of a live studio audience. The premise, although simple, allows us to honor the movie version while also giving it a fresh voice. At the heart of the story is George’s dedication to his community, which becomes in direct conflict with his personal desires. In this respect, I have chosen to February 6-23 set the events at a Santa Barbara theater in 1947 and allow for the recognition of current businesses that existed at that time. At the very least, I hope this will add to your enjoyment of the piece. At best, I hope it will remind us all that we have a responsibility not only to ourselves but to each other. Finally, I would like to thank Jonathan Fox for giving me the opportunity to bring this story to life – especially at a time when the world is overwhelmed with despair. I can say without a doubt – I can’t think of a more important story to tell.

A NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG

The Curious Life of It’s a Wonderful life In 1943, a Civil War historian named Phillip van Doren Stern included a short story he had written, entitled “The Greatest Gift,” into his annual Christmas cards. The story eventually came to the attention of film director Frank Capra, who wanted an appropriate film for Americans who had just gone through World War II. Capra was determined to have Jimmy Stewart play the leading role of everyman George Bailey. As was true for Capra, It’s a Wonderful Life would be the first film Stewart chose to make after his decorated war service. Capra’s movie studio, Liberty Pictures, spent nearly $4 million on producing It’s a Wonderful Life. When the film came out, it lost over a half-million dollars at the box office, a fortune in those days. Liberty Pictures went into bankruptcy and liquidation. The rights to the film were passed among film distributors and, in 1974, its copyright was not renewed. TV stations realized that they could air the film without having to pay anyone; It’s a Wonderful Life was televised frequently during the holiday season thereafter. With annual screenings, It’s a Wonderful Life finally got its due as a finely crafted and enormously feeling film. Its themes of redemption and the heroism of ordinary life make us want to become the best versions of ourselves possible. As such, it Only at ETC remains a perfect holiday story calling us to reaffirm our commitment to our highest moral principles. proudly supports Ensemble Theatre
